Guild Wars 2

Hi all,

My computer on paper should be able to run GW2 no problem, but I can not seem to get any sort of decent FPS.

Here are my specs:

MSI 990FXA-GD65 AMD 990FX Socket AM3+ Motherboard
AMD FX-8120 X8 3100MHZ 16MB 125W AM
Patriot Gamer 2 4GB DDR3 PC10666 (x2)
NVidia GeForce GTX 560

I run my OS on an SSD, and have the game installed on a separate 1TB SATA3 disk drive.

Currently with the game set to the default “Performance Settings” aka just about everything on low, I am getting about 20 FPS.

I understand my PC will not blow anyone away, but I believe I should be able to get at least decent FPS with the graphics set to their lowest level.

Any suggestions on where to go from here? The game at this point is only borderline playable for me.

I have followed the steps in the sticky thread, but they had no impact.

From what I’ve heard, AMD CPU’s aren’t that great with this game. If it is a CPU problem, then the graphics wont make much of a difference.

I don’t know how to fix it, but I know how to identify the problem. Go into the game, and then change the graphics settings about. If there’s not much difference, then it’s your CPU. If there’s a huge difference, then it’s your GPU.

I’d wager it’s your CPU though, since your GPU’s not that bad, and shouldn’t have that much trouble on Low settings.

Which OS are your using? You don’t say where you are getting 20fps. In a city? Standing on a mountaintop? Middle of a WvW zerg? It matters as some areas and conditions (lots of other players around you) make a significant impact on performance.

The low FPS is anywhere. It hovers around 30 while standing still, but quickly drops and starts skipping when I attempt to turn. Even in the middle of nowhere with no one else around, I can not get the game to play smoothly. In cities it is nothing but choppiness, and it takes forever to load. For the OS, it is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

As for the processor, I am starting to think that might be my problem. I am hoping there might be a setting somewhere that will help me resolve this issue. My processor is far from great, but should be able to handle the game.

Any suggestions on a better processor that would fit my socket (am3+), and not cost an arm and a leg that would perform better? I know the FX line has had it’s share of issues.

I don’t know how much of a performance increase I get with my 8350 compared to an 8120 but if you’re able to, I’d push it to 4 GHz and see what happens but other than that there’s not really much you can do unless you wanted to shell out the cash for an i5.

When you’re having bad fps, what does your CPU and GPU usage look like?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but GW2 is horribly optimised. End of. You can sit here and offer advice and/or listen to it but you’ll just be wasting your time. LA will still have crappy fps regardless of how many hoops you jump through, Black Citadel the same. Anet optimise the game for their own computers, who gives a catbaby about the rest of the planet, right?
