Low FPS about anywhere with a good rig
I get a different label from before where I set the PCIEX16_1 Link Speed. Instead of saying “Not Present” it now says “x0”. Am I seeing progress?
the problem is that its not recoginzing the card is even there
the update/driver you really need to find is:
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. – Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3.exe
which you can find at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/dn344644.aspx
you must use windows ie
though they are only for windows 8 =(

yes you are making some progress, can you switch it to gen 3? x16?
For some reason, it’s now back to not present and Gen 3 still does nothing.
Edit: is there a place to see if the GPU is connected in the BIOS? It should give us an idea on how much it’s not recognize?
it really should just auto detect if you set everything on auto. The asus bios should see all the components. are the power pins plugged in?
You can try to install the basic windows driver i linked above? that might help
Power pins as in? I didn’t touch any other thing than the GPU itself. If it’s working in the black slot… it should be in the blue as well, right? And I’m indeed looking into the basic windows driver.

no i mean on the gpu, iv made that mistake many times where i forget to plug the gpu pcie power connectors in
being a 7970, it has two connector ports on the nose of the card for external power. Are those plugged in? I don’t think it would even boot otherwise if they weren’t however.
It’s plugged. http://imgur.com/lxChTAj
The only thing I can think of is that the 16x lane slot is defective in some way but not enough to be picked up. The game should run fine with the 7970 on an 8x slot. I’m running 7970 crossfire and my two sit at 8×. I don’t know too much about it though since I haven’t had an intel platform for too long and this is my first since pentium 4 prescott back in the days of LGA 775. Dodgy’s advice is better than mine. Can check with the manufacturer as well.
What’s the best thing to do right now? You’re definitely saying it’s broken?
have you tried the wddm 1.3 x64 drivers? you must use ie to get access. after installing that and it still doesnt work, then yes its most likely broken
I’m looking into how to launch it.
Alrighty then. This is quiet hopeless. Is running in x4 instead of x2 a potential fix?
try this direct download link for the 64bit
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2013/06/200000429_c6b2c73045c335934d327e05c61f16c0b1f48b2e.cab
you should get a big .cab file and you should be able to open extract and run the amddocl_as64 and the amdocl_ld64 programs
x4 at 2.0 would be viable but just barely you would at best get like 30-40fps at high which is more like a 7750/70 card rather than a 7970
Yeah. I think I’ll just give up and assume my stuff’s broken. The update stuff isn’t working either. What’s the best path to take from here? Changing my mother board? The GPU? The whole PC?
that is the last trick up my sleeve. Other than that i see no other solutions. Best of luck.
Just rma your board

Thanks, you were a big help.
Edit: Want me to keep you updated on my future status?
How long since you formatted ? did you always had this problem in other games aswell, did it just happen out of the blue ? Was the card Always seated in the wrong slot ? Is your Bios updated to the Latest version aswell ?
Last chance before you RMA,you could try a complete reformat of windows, make sure you install the latest mobo drivers aswell when youre done formatting. And install them in the right order. And make sure the gpu is seated in the right slot before you format.
Mobo drivers,Lan/internet,Gpu drivers,sound – All windows updates.

I’m only having this problem for this game. When I built my PC for the first time, the same black screen was happening and the first slot I was to put it in was the blue one. Then realizing it wasn’t working, switched to the black one to find it working.
I’ll try formatting I guess. Though I highly doubt it would actually work. Should I plug my GPU in the blue one as I format and use my internal GPU to see what I’m doing?
I don’t see how formatting would help as this problem seems to be in the PCI-E slot or the GPU itself (which is also unlikely), unless you’re thinking of getting rid of the drivers for sure. Just for the heck of it, can you borrow another GPU from a friend or something to make sure your unit is not actually defective? Just to summarize things now, your GPU doesn’t work in the first 16x slot an in the second it works only at 4x?
It works at both 2x and x4 in the black slot. But not in the x16 slot (blue one). And I do have another GPU in hand. I’ll try this as soon as my backup is done.
And are there any other PCI-E cards placed there?
I just looked that mobo up at ASUS’s website and it indeed says that it shares the bandwidth with 1x slots and you can change the settings in BIOS. Is this what you did to get it from 2x to 4x? It doesn’t change the fact that it should work in the blue slot though.
By default it was to x2 and the only other option is x4, but I think this is referring to the power of the black slot. I haven’t seen much settings about the blue one. And no there are no other PCI-E cards there. Only my big HD 7970.
New development. My motherboard isn’t faulty. My other PC GPU instantly displayed in the blue slot, and I don’t even have the right drivers installed.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!? O_O

hardware conflict usually.
Since you cleared NVram/CMOS, your system reset its system resources (DMA/IRQ assignments).
With your 7900 in the Top slot, can you EVEN get the BIOS to display on that card? It not, what about when you disable the iGPU on your CPU? If you cannot get that far, forget it working in windows.
On my system, i had to disable the iGPU or it would take over the system. While i could get my 7790 to work as a secondary card, nothing would disable on it outside of windows, until I disabled the iGPU in the BIOS. So try that.
Once you get into the Windows boot menu and such ON your AMD GPU, then start working on drivers.
But if you cannot even get the BIOS To post on the card, then you probably have a bad card.

I indeed can’t even see the BIOS with the HD7970. I doubt the card to be bad as it works in the black slot?
How would I disable the iGPU in my CPU and what would that achieve?

The card works in the black slot, means that 4x out of its 16x lanes are working. If it cannot link at 8x then it wont work in the GPU slot.
Put your 7970 in the other system you pulled from and see if you can post to it there. If so, then it might be a perm incompatibility between that 7970 and the Motherboard.

I don’t have a PSU powerful enough to do that unfortunately. But I’m gonna try it in my friends PC in a few minutes. Thanks for the info.

Ok, well verify that the card can link at 16x or 8x and go from there. If it cannot then it is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Fortunately it’s still under legal warranty, and I’m currently chatting with an ASUS support. How convenient.
Here’s my report to cover the overall problem :
There’s an old and new GPU. The new GPU is the one that doesn’t work in my PCIEx16_1 one and only in the PCIEx16_2 one. The old works in both. I just tried my new GPU on my friends mother board in a blue slot (he has two blue slots and no black one. I’m guessing both are PCIEx16 slots) and it works just fine.
So if the old GPU is working on my mobo and my new GPU is working in my friends mobo, can we conclude that none of my hardware is currently defective and that there is either a setting missing in my BIOS to enable I don’t know what or that the Asus P8Z77-v LE mobo is incompatible with the Radeon HD7970 GPU?
Thanks again.

I figured something like this, honestly. Also, did you read my last post about the BIOS update ? That can fix your issue if youre still on an old Bios version.Ive had the same kind of problem like a year or 2 ago with my cross hair v formula, had issues with my cpu,and my sli setup my 2nd card constantly popping to 4x speed eventhough in 16x slot.I installed a bios update, and everything was fixed>
If you do,i Highly recommend to put the bios file on a flash drive, usb stick, reboot your pc go into bios and update it from there.Never ever ever ever do it through windows.

The latest bios update is actually even from this year, 2014.01.03.

I can’t seem to be able to do a bios update. Why can’t it be easy. I followed the procedure about the USB Bios Flashback thing that the Asus mobo has and it won’t even react when I push the kitten flashback button.
Now I’m p!ssed.

Try to restore your BIOS settings to Factory default, reboot and try it again. Also make sure you select the proper file on your flashdrive.
Did you try to disable the iGPU in the BIOS? It could be now that there’s a conflict between the discrete and integrated graphics? Do you have the latest chipset drivers and iGPU drivers?
No idea how all of this works x.x
Edit: Can’t find any iGUP setting
