Q:

dxdiag: http://pastebin.com/netUzypV
(Ignore TERA Not Responding. It’s an issue where it doesn’t have focus. Alt+Tabbing back in fixes the problem instantly.)

On TERA, I get perfect fps and panning, smooth, no stutters and no dropped FPS. GW2 has fps drops while panning, even when no one is on screen besides me.

On Tribes: Ascend the game has unplayable FPS on all settings (0~5 fps)

On Ragnarok Online 2 when 30~50+ users are on-screen at once with max settings (shadows off = no problems) camera panning has problems too.

Skyrim has no problems whatsoever (FPS exceeds 60 even with sharpshooter’s old ENB) save for minor shadow issues while using FXAA (fixed with AA forcing and a dll patch in the skyrim directory.)

Here are temps while running TERA while panning slowly and fast:

GW2 is a highly CPU bassed game.
Your running a AMD cpu, more specificaly one that isnt the FX 8350. This means your bottlenecked by ur CPU in GW2.

Check out Kirito’s FAQ (Part 4.4 more specificaly)

Its alot of easier than me explaining why its ur CPU like i have done for other people hundreadso f times lol. (thumbs up for Kirito )

Tera used Unreal Engine. GW2 uses Modified GW1 engine.

it is highly unlikely a optimization will ever come that wil lincrease performance enough to match other well optimzed MMO’s.

So i wouldnt hold ur breath. This is GW2 and this is how it performs. just like all new games that come out ..some requir beafier rigs than others. You want to play it u need the rig.

You do realize that TERA came out only a few months before GW2 right? So shouldn’t TERA be just as bad due to that logic?

No. entirly different game engines.
Different code ..optimsations ..the way each distributes processes.. how each culls objects ..when it loads stuff. .how it loads stuff… the ‘stuff’ itself is different. I.E art style ..objects etc etc ..totaly different.

I have Tera myself ..it does run smoother. .till u get into a RIFT event with 50+ players + 50+ monsters around.

That’s to be expected of all MMORPGs though. You’d need a dual-CPU Motherboard to even get that good. (this plus x2 this)

Yes its to be expected …No a dual CPu rig wouldnt help. .. Even Tera would not utilize that many cores.
I have a 3930k with 6 cores and 12 threads ..Tera doesnt utilize them all . Im even OC’d. The Tera game engine suffers, like all MMO’s & ‘most’ PC games in general atm, with a lack of proper core/thread usuage ..once u get to the game Engines limit of how it can handle massive loads ..the performance tanks.
GW2 does well al lthigns considering becouse so long as u have a strong CPU even a 100 man WvW battle can stay above 30 fps. Tera on the other hand ..cannot. BUT Tera does perform better everywhere else. again though .2 entirerly different engines and games.

Anyway the answere to ur original question is that ur CPU does not have strong enough Single thread performance.

I’m not changing to intel anytime soon, so I guess I should get that top-end FX series then. Or just wait until mid-next year see if AMD comes out with even better AM3+ CPUs.

The FX 8350 would do , but u wont be able to get a constant 30+fps everywhere ..like LA and especialy WvW ..even if u OC.

You really should consider Intel, they have much stronger single thread processing power atm, and the 3570k isn’t really all THAT expensive all things considered.

I bought that 7950 just in December (to replace my old PNY GTX 470), so I’m not making a major change to my motherboard or Processor anytime soon. Besides, Intel changes their motherboard style each new processor line, it’s a bit annoying to say the least. I have a HAF-X, and I know some motherboard types won’t work in it unless you put the backplating for the CPU cooler and install the CPU cooler in first before putting the motherboard in the HAF-X. (Only Intel motherboards have the problem, no AMD motherboard does.)

Either mobo would work, just depends if you want the extra features asus board offers.

i5 vs i7, you won’t see a difference in GW2. Also, go for a “K” version of the core i5/i7, has unlocked multiplier for overclocking.

Yea bassicaly what Kirito said

Pritty much any of the Asus or Gigabyte boards will do ..u dont have to spend loads on their top of the line models. I mean i went with a P9X79 Pro (LGA2011) ..which is by no means top fo thel ine and it OC’s brlliantly.. the LGA 1155 equivalanet to that shuldnt be to expensive.
Like the ASUS P8Z77-V LK or ASUS P8Z68-V PRO or GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H

And a K version of the CPU is required for the OC..which in itself would be required if u want 30+fps all the time.

I think the answer is that the Guild Wars 2 game engine is the problem. Seriously, don’t blame the CPU when optimization is the job of the developers – especially if Guild Wars 2 is only the exception to the general rule.

Im not here to discuss whether GW2 game engine is borked., im just letting the OP know what the ‘player’,not Anet, can do with his/her rig to get around the performance issues. Currently the only way around it is to have a good single thread performing cpu, and that only leaves u with the choice of 2nd/3rd gen Intel i5’s or better.

I am sorry sir, but I just think there plenty of hidden elements so we (players) can only do so much. Bugs and unoptimized code are areas that can hog even the best rigs.

Please look at this discussion: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Will-this-game-ever-be-optimized/first#post1120430. Powerful single thread CPU and yet there is still a problem.

I found out why the bandit caves for queensdale lag so terribly much. It’s the HUD/GUI. While using the “Point of interest” movie cinematic in the cave, the movie runs at 60 fps as if there was no problem at all. With the HUD/GUI on, the caves run around 5~15 fps.

When exiting the cave or looking away from the cave’s deepest parts, the fps gets instantly better.

While looking down at certain areas, I can easily acheive higher than 60 fps (if vsync is off.) This actually said 61 when I took it, but went to 59 when the screenshot was taken:

Well there aren’t that much games who already can take some benefit of the hyper threading.
Just check those benchmarks : http://ixbtlabs.com/articles3/cpu/archspeed-2009-4-p1.html

You can see that the 2 singles cores are doing pretty good against 1 core with hyper threading. I have the fx-8350 and without OC he runs already at 4.0Ghz for the prize it costs it’s not to bad, and you can play guildwars 2 on full HD.
Then again, i’m not really a gamer guy, I use the pc more for 3dsmax or photoshop.

Yea for u, as som1 who uses professional programs, a AMD FX 8350 is a good CPU. Infact for multi thread performance, u’d be hard pressed to find a better CPU untill u hit Intel’s Xeon chips and i7 Extremes…except the Intel i7 3930k…but the price difference between the FX 8350 and 3930k is huge.

For a pure gaming machine though Intel is the best choice for its single thread performance…though they are more expensive.

Well, just attempted an overclock to 4.0 GHz with 1.5v at 200 MHz x 20:

Results are on the Kaineng Server/World…

http://i.snag.gy/Tr88L.jpg (max temp seen was actually 37 C after loading heavy areas)

With these settings in wayfarer’s foothills:

http://i.snag.gy/vYw11.jpg

And in Lion’s Arch: (Avg, 8~40 fps, depending on where you’re walking)

http://i.snag.gy/YgYVq.jpg

And in the Bandit cave in queensdale:

http://i.snag.gy/9lQ2l.jpg (Often below 14 fps, even though I said the patch helped, it only did for a little while.)

As a note, this overclocking causes areas to load slower after I enter them. For instance, graphics load really fast, but NPCs and Sound don’t, they take much longer than normal.
