I have seen a severely noticeable difference since I first installed the game in map loading speeds. What used to take maybe 2 or 3 seconds is now taking 15+.

Is there some form of caching or related I can clear to possibly speed this up?

Wayfarer Foothills – 5 sec
Divinity’s Reach – 8 sec
Queensdale – 7 sec
Lions Arch – 10 sec

Those are my loading times atm. Don’t think I’ve ever had 15, maybe 12-13 max for LA for example.

Maybe the hard drive where the game is installed needs a defragmentation.
Or maybe is to full to operate at 100%.

Well, the OP has to use a third party utility to defrag.

Windows defrag will ignore pieces of files that are more 64 MB blocks.

If you want guild wars data file to be one continuous file, then the op will have to use third party utilities.

Will a defrag actually help with loading speeds? Cause places like Lions arch always take upwards of a minute to load for me with a fast internet connection

I don’t see how a 3rd party option will be better than the default that works in the downtime, but I’ll give it a shot regardless and post back.

Apparently Defraggler found ~60 gigs of fragmented files on my games drive. Steam’s defragger apparently sucks because it’s mostly my steam games, but gw2.dat was found.

I’ll let you know. It used to take 4-5 seconds, jumped up to 20 or so, and now I’m defragging gw2.dat specifically. Look like an answer in the 15 minute range will be available.

Windows defragger is actually pretty good; however, the defragger will ignore 64 MB blocks. If you want the game in one continuous file, then you will have to use theird party utilities. Making the game continuous file will make the game load faster, but sometimes I wonder if the cost is worth it because updates will scatter this nicely defragged file

Yeah, apparently that did the trick. The initial load because I was logging in took ~8 seconds (instead of 20 or so) so I left LA via warpey smokeygate and walked back in via the same method, and it loaded in exactly 3 seconds.

I’m mad now I never thought to use a 3rd party tool. Gonna let it run on the other ~40 gigs of games to see if Steam will load faster now too, but that’s not something to worry about on these boards.

Better use a third party program. There are some cool ones, who let you store all big files at the end of your disk, with all parts in 1 block. Files used more often are put in front.
So yes defrag will boost the speed of the HDD, and so the speed of loading maps.
It’s easier to find data when it’s ordered. Go to a library to find a book when none are sorted by alphabet…
And yes updates can mess it up, but if you do a defrag every 2 days it will just take 30 seconds. Don’t wait until you have half of your disk colored in red squares :p
