Massive Overheating?
My GPU is also overheating with Guild Wars 2, even though it’s fine with games such as Warband, Skyrim etc. Despite this i know this is my fault as my pc has terrible airflow and poor quality fans which i plan to fix in the next month or so.
Is anyone else experiencing this? If so could it be due to my GPU and is that my fault or possibly just a lack of optimization thus far? meaning it could be fixed in the future.
usually means something is wrong with your computer, be it airflow, poor fans etc. GW2 likes to push things, I suggest customizating your graphic settings to fit your computer specs.
I have approx 4 fans so I dont think airflow is an issue, I routinely clean my computer’s dust out. I have a decent graphics card ; My settings are not on high they are simply on medium. I should be able to run this game on medium no problem, FPS is not an issue though.
What do you consider overheating?
Which gpu?

Hmmm… get a temp program to monitor your GPU/CPU/RAM etc (Many windows 7 gadgets lying around that do that) – and test bed in both other games and in guild wars 2. See what’s up.
By the way, mind posting your computer specs and how old the parts are?
Depends, what GPU do you have?
Ive found the game to be extremely CPU intensive, my sisters computer had the CPU to temps of 93+ degrees which caused the game to run at 1-4fps, and obviously bad for the CPU. Problem was the thermal paste needed reapplying, 40-50c after reapplying thermal paste and clearing out the crap windows stock fan.
As for GPU, my GTX 570 hasnt gone above 57c, though it is one of those GPUs built for heat treatment. On the other hand if you have an actual heatsink-graphic card like a GTX 295, itd probably hit the high 90s without a decently cooled tower.
Is your GPU fan spinning up properly when under load? I found that mine wasn’t. I have a Nvidia GTX260 and for some reason the GPU fan was staying at idle speed during GW2 sessions, even when there was heavy load. As a result GPU and motherboard temperatures were soaring and I was getting lockups. I’ve not had this problem with other games, so it’s either GW2 specific problem or a problem with the Nvidia drivers, or a combination of the two.
The solution was to download a free application called MSI Afterburner which allows me to manually control my GPU fan speed and monitor temperature. If I set the fan manually to around 75% speed with Afterburner then I don’t have any overheating problems. If I forget to manually set the fans ….. toasty!
If it makes you feel better, my gpu is running at 83c right now. But then the GF100 have a thermal limit of 105C and they are well known for running super hot. Plus it was core unlocked to 448 cores and overclocked 13%…
Been running it like this the better part of the last year and a half or so.
And the previous post’s suggestion of checking your fan speed seems to be key. They like to err on the “quiet” side, and the default drivers run the fan pretty slow.
Try setting up a custom fan speed curve for your GPU (if its gpu) and you can do the same with your CPU.
I personaly use EVGA Precision for a custom GPU fan curve. My 560ti SOC never goes above 75c even after constant 99% load usuage ..and if for any reason it reaches 80c i’ve got my fans set to go full pelt 100% if it does. otherwise it runs from 40% to 70% fan speed depending on the temperature.
Befor this if left on its stock settings the temperature would reach into the 80’s and the fan would go up 1% per 1 degree of temperature from 40% speed after reaching 70c. .meaning it would only run at 70% speed at 100c temperature ..which is crazy.
As for CPU im using my motherboards OS UI interface ‘Asus Ai Suit II’ and have a custom Fan speed curve setup there aswell. But my cpu barely breaks a swett tbh <18% usage.

Wow thats hot. I setup a custom fan profile and my cpu never goes over 65c on any core and my gpus never go above 64c on the top one and 59c on the bottom card. Even without the fan profile they never went above 75 for the top card and 70c for the bottom. But then again they are 3 slots each and 2.5 slots of each one is just for cooling. Highly recommend the asus directcu cards whether you prefer nvidia or amd. They really run cool especially with that custom fan profile.

Such specific ambiguity!
C’mon guy, what is anyone supposed to do with this?
What are your loads and temps and what prompted you to start this discussion? freezing? crashing? shutdowns? <skritt> what-What-WHAAAAT!?</skritt>

Im not sure if it has been mentioned but your airflow does not depend on the amount of fans that you have but how they direct the air through your system. For instance you could have 8 fans in your system but if they do not direct the flow properly they could actually heat up your system instead of cooling it down.
I play on a Sager gaming laptop that has a 580M. Up until GW2 I had have been really impressed with the Sager’s cooling. But for some reason GW2 is just stressing it like nothing else…..@max settings Ive seen it hit low 90s. Has not caused any FPS drop yet but its starting to worry me when I see it hit those kinda temps. Other games even on max settings like Skyrim, BF3, Rift, etc rarely brake 75.

Give your laptop intakes fans and heatsinks and nice clean.
You will be surpirsed at how only a small amount of dust and grime can cause a laptop to heat up.
To be honest it wouldnt matter what game or program caused the increased heat, the fact that it gets this hot shows an issue with cooling. I mean for OC’ers we purposly go out our way to find a program that will put the most strain on a part to try get it to get as hot as it would ever get… then we adjust our cooling accordinly.
Your laptop has now found a game/program that taxes it enough heat up the components, as it would/could wih any other taxing game/program. This is just the first time it happens to have done it hard and long enough to overwhlem your current cooling .. whether it be becouse of dust or not remains to be seen.

Dust, cigarette smoke (mixed with dust) and pet hair are common culprits of overheating components, because they form a strong layer between heatsinks and fans.
External exhaust GPUs suffer badly from this, you have to really disassemble them and clean the inside of the exhaust.

cpu temp threshold is much lower, most should cut out at 75 deg.
as for gpu’s they are safe up to around 110 deg..while i don’t reccommend trying that for any extended period they should survive such temps with no major issues.
having 4 fans as the op states isn’t exactly great, do they all push air inside or out are the set up right to push and pull air properly.
air flow is key to cooling of a pc, i have 2 fans one pushes air in one draws it out i run stable temps under 50 deg all the time and run gw2 on high across the board.
it’s not the game it’s something you are doing/done/missing.

Yeah thats my project for this weekend. Going to clean her out as well as reapply thermal compound. Its almost 2 years old now so can’t hurt to redo the paste.
OP
Make sure your video drivers are up to date. Older drivers can cause different temps on your GPU depending on the game. This is due to poor optimization for the game in older versions of the drivers.
Its possible your video card is a beast, and is running the game TOO fast in some areas. Enable the framerate limiter in the game settings, or enable vsync. This will cap your framerate from going over 60 or so. Getting 150 fps in areas that arent needed, cause your card to run hotter.
Are you overlocking your card? If so, thats probably related to this problem.
And of course, graphic intensive options like Anti Aliasing, can cause your hardware to run hotter, so tweak those and see what you can achieve.

Make sure you apply it correctly!
Also, remember that most laptops don’t use thermal paste, but adhesive thermal stickers, so don’t remove those if you don’t see any screws holding the heatsinks.

Like Gadzooks suggested, I too have been using the frame limiter option. My gtx 670’s were running in overdrive giving me 140+ fps in some areas, were using over 100% power and running close to 70 degrees and thats with 5 case fans at turbo setting.
Now, with frame limiter set at 60, they use only around 30-40% power and hang around 40-45 degrees and I can set my case fans on cruise without any kind of heat building up.
For some reason my cards go completely nuts without the limiter and so far GW2 is the only game that does that. Also, vsync for some reason didn’t give me the same effect, so I would definitely try out the frame limiter option.
just set vsync ..unless your using a 120hz monitor you will be set to 60 fps.
Those with said monitor should activate vsync AND fps limiter to get rid of screen tearing. Since screen tearing can still be seen even when you under the screen refresh rate. I wont get into the technicalities as to why’ ,just know that it does :P
it depends on your eyesight whether you notice screen tearing when you dont use vsync but i for one cant stand screen tearing.

some peeps with nvidia cards reported the same issue in swtor, granted they have always run a few deg hotter than amd cards but not by as much as some are reporting.
nvidia and amd both did investigations into cards being bricked by that game, and they did find a fault in the game code that was causing something that shouldn’t be happening.
they both patched their drivers to prevent it. and thats about all i can remember regarding that issue it was a while back now.
