I assumed it was unrelated but after reading several threads I have come to think it was perhaps connected to this latest patch. My 6990m graphics card died last night – I had been playing on the new patch for 10 or so minutes and the screen went grey with small black vertical lines all through it. I rebooted and the same thing happened one I started playing GW2 again, this time after even less time.

After this, I was unable to successfully boot my laptop, and I have sent it back on warranty to have the GPU replaced.

I figured it was just bad luck as the 6990m is known for running a little hot, but given the similar problems people are having with their GPU since the latest patch and the way in which this problem only seemed to pop up as a result of playing GW2 on this latest patch, I thought it was worth posting. Any information from ANet staff on this would be most helpful as it doesn’t seem i’m alone in this (even though my results have been perhaps more severe than others posting).

This is main reason i dont game on laptops, unless its a full out high spec overpriced alienware gaming laptop, but then you could get a better spec desktop for the same price.

any way, make sure you get a laptop fan intake stand to help airflow, make sure the fan in takes are always clean and clear on the laptop, get evga percision and set fans to make when gaming on the system.

wish you luck with your RMA on the laptop.

GW2 has in the past, and seems to now, (along with other games it must be said), been able to show up(but not cause) heating issues in hardware.

Laptops are especialy susceptible to having insufficient cooling which can be brought to light when put under heavy load in certain ways.

Even PC’s can have this happen, more so with hot runing architecture CPU’s and GPU’s and also in rigs with low airflow.

There other causes for overheating beyound this though. Fan profile speeds, dirty heatsinks, TIM issues, insufficent stock cooling, etc.

If when you get back ur laptop wth a new GPU, if it does it again, or if it gets very hot (use monitoring software to check) i would get the manufacturer/retailer to refund you or replace it with a suitabe laptop as you current one would not be “fit for purpose”. You would have even more leverage if the laptop was/is advertised as a gaming laptop.

It certainly is a gaming laptop – at the time I purchased it the 6990m was the single fastest gaming card available in a laptop. This was around 19 months ago.

Is it a gaming laptop design wise ?

Is the laptop chassis large beafy and full of air vents and good airflow , or is it small/tightly compact with few air vents ?

The chassis desing matters a whole lot with gaming laptops.

Yep! It’s a Clevo/Sager/Metabox p150hm. Well ventilated and pretty regularly cleaned out for dust.

Edit: by the looks of it, origin are just rebranded clevo, which is the same as my metabox plus a few hundred dollars haha.

I’m playing on a laptop too, i bought it less than 4 months ago and is a gaming one with 4GB of dedicated VRAM. Since last patch my fps dropped from 45fps to 13-16dps and my pc turn off couse of the overheating.
Fact is that’s not written nowhere that the game is for Desktop PC only…
So ANet should think to fix this too, instead if my GPU will melt i will ask ANet to pay the bill for my laptop couse minimu requirement are long way underm my laptop level.

ANet’s not responsible for any damages that can occur by a user’s persistence to play a game that may harm their machine.

’ANet’s not responsible for any damages that can occure by a user’s persistence to play a game that is to much for their machine to handle’

‘may harm their machine’ kinda makes it sound like the games fault :P which ofc it isnt.

I mean as in if the system can’t handle the game. Hardware not being good enough, etc.
