Greetings,
I played for several hours last night, went to sleep and awoke to the shortcut missing on my desktop (the game client was also left open so that template was also “X’d” out).
I searched the entire system including the firewall program that came with this HP laptop, called “Microsoft Security Essentials.”
there was no way for me to inspect the files it quarantines, and I am not reinstalling the game. at 150kb/sec, this is going to take forever.
Any idea where this could have gone? I also provided my firewall the exception to allow gw2.exe, but the entire installation is missing, as if I never installed int in tht first place. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Much Appreciated.
Search your computer for Gw2.dat (it should be where you had GW2 installed). This is the file the game uses to store all of its data. It should be around 20 GB. If you can locate that file, simply download the launcher again and put it in the same folder as Gw2.dat.
I’ve never used MSE, but if you open it, there should be a history/quarantine section that you can use to restore files that were quarantined.

MSE is junk, you should uninstall that and download Avast! Free Instead.
But follow Healix’s directions on restoring the game, either via the MSE UI, or downloading the launcher and placing the very large .dat file in the same folder as the gw2.exe file.

Microsoft Security Essentials does nothing to GW2. I am running MSE on my machine, and it never interfered with GW2 in any way. You also don’t need to put any exceptions for GW2 into MSE or into the Windows firewall – it just works out of the box.
Your problem is not related to MSE, as long as GW2 was not infected by a virus. To view files quarantined by MSE, open MSE by clicking its icon in the task bar and choose the tab right to the “Update” tab (cannot tell how it is called in the English version, probably “History”). There is the history of quarantined files.

I also never had any issues like this and I use MSE on all my systems are you sure you don’t have another AV installed. Or possibly a failing hard drive, as for MSE being junk it works for me but I am very careful on what I download and the site I visit especially on my gaming system. Also where did you get your information that MSE is bad, if it’s one of those pay for sertification .Org sites that have popped up lately naturally they are going to say that MSE is the wurst. How long do you think they will stay in business if they gave MSE a good rating.

How about from Microsoft’s Mouth Directly? They recommended 3rd party over MSE starting back in 2013, then recanted and said they stand by their malware products (they didnt mention MSE by name!!). So yea, thats why.

Thanks, Might be too late.
I already began downloading GW again, could not locate any trace of the product in any of the locations, including MSE (which I also just uninstalled). the only product information on the laptop now is from today, so I either overwrote what was already here (unlikely) or the information was just sanitized by HP Sanitizer (which I’ve never used).
Really confused, but I appreciate all the replies. MSE actually dod not allow me to view any of the files it quarantined. Wouldn’t mind but my phone is the only data plan that I have, so it’s going to take for-e-ver to get back into the game again.
Ugh, I will keep looking for the original, but the winds are not favorable.
K of K.
A word of advice. Chances are something else is on your system.
to view quarantined files from mse -> is 4 clicks
1. Open MSE
2. Click History
3.View details
4.yes for admin rights
actually on rereading. How did mse enter this picture?
Furthermore MSE is not a firewall program.
If anything I am willing to bet you have something else on your system that is quite happy you uninstalled mse.

Is HP sanitizer installed on you system if so that is most likely the culprit have you checked into this just because you never used it doesn’t mean it’s not running in the background.
