However… it took a blown GPU to do it.
I had a Radeon 5970 which gave up the ghost last week. Wasn’t related to GW2 at all – it just went bye-bye while surfing the web ( O.O ) causing my monitor to go into instant power save mode. The PC itself still had power and sounded like it was churning away at something – I just couldn’t see it.
So.
I got myself one of these: 2GB EVGA GTX 760 Superclocked ACX
Oh my gosh.
The only time I dipped below 50FPS was in the busiest part of LA – and then it only went down to 45. Note that I haven’t (yet) done any big zergs or WvW as I’m more into PvE. I also managed to up shadows to high with reflections staying at terrain and sky and running in full screen mode rather than windowed (which I had been doing).
Now I’m not saying everyone ought to go out and buy a better graphics card, far from it. What I am saying is this is what worked for me. I do hope that, in some way, this observation helps those suffering from FPS woes.
Good luck and seasons greetings. Better change my signature now.
Aww. I would have wanted that 5970 had it still been alive.
Sorry! It’s dead Jim, dead Jim, dead Jim.
lmao. Well either way, glad to see your FPS is good. I’m waiting to buy a board for my i7 4770K here that I finally a few days ago so my FPS will go up too.
What in game settings are you running with that new GPU and the older i7?
Everything on at least high, reflections on terrain and sky, character culling settings are both low.

Not bad. So those Gen1 i7’s really hold their own still :-)
Character culling on Low will result in significant FPS gains for all systems. Put atleast Character Limit to High or Highest and texture to Medium to truly see how it performs.

Yeah, they’re still a bit ahead of the newer i3s (especially the higher end i7s), which do well enough.
it’s always nice to hear a positive story about fps.
now that you have your fps under control, you should check out sweet FX.
make gw2 prettier without a loss in fps.
Turn off post processing, reflections and in game FXAA. Use native rendering, other settings you can set to high/ultra. Makes the game much better looking for me.
Adjust AA settings in Nvidia panel to polish jagged egdes. Im using the same card + i5 and having 30-35 fps in zerg.

Gen 1 i5s work fine as well…..i7s are definitely NOT needed for this game.

yea that’s what I have been seeing on these forums, if the system is tweaked just right.
Looking at upgrading the wife’s Rig after Xmas.
Shes on AM3 with an 830 pushed to 3.8Ghz. It does OK, but When im watching her screen while we are playing together, its just painful. I’m rocking 25-30FPS in these zerg fests, and shes barely pushing 8-12.
So, I figure either a 130 bucks for a 965BE (which I would expect to hold 20FPS~) or popping 250-300 for a 1155 Z board and a unlocked i5 gen1. I would RATHER do another i5-4670K as the outcome from that upgrade was 10-20x’s faster then that am3 platform (I moved my 1066T over to my ESXi host)
been kinda thinking of flipping a coin on this one :-)
Im know if she found out I spent 300 on her system, it would be a week long war about the cost :-)
@ SolaNova : OK, I’ll give that a try and see what happens!
@ NeedCoffee: Took a look at SweetFX – seems like quite a complicated tool. Or is it easy to use?
Right. Some further findings.
I cranked everything to max – ultra shadows, highest animation, reflections all, etc. etc. Went into LA and managed 25 FPS.
Out in the open PvE world, I got a rather nice 209 FPS. Yeah, two hundred and nine.
Holy cuddly-kittens (just got two btw from a rescue centre – very cuddly and cute beyond belief but I digress ).
Which leads me to believe that an Intel/nVidea cpu/gpu tag team is the way to go.
What do you think?

Nvida or AMD for the GPU wont make ‘much’ of a difference. But, it’s all in that CPU :-)
I know the feeling, Full on ultra 25-30FPS in LA, and out in the open world 160-175, its rather nice :-)
Now, if we had a way to ‘better’ the zerg experience :-)
