Q:

I have no problems running the game on “auto detect”, even in WvsW.
However I would like to start playing on max settings for best performance.
Im not sp good with techs and specs so could use some advice.
A year ago since i bought my current computer with the following specs:

Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Central Processor Intel® Core™ i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce GT 440
Video Memory 1,50 GB
Screen Resolution 1920 × 1080
Total Memory 7,99 GB
Free Memory 5,00 GB
Total Hard disk 1379,67 GB
Free Hard disk 1234,37 GB

I do consider buying a new computer, but ofcourse just getting one or two new components is preferable if possible. Can Anyone tell me without too much work, if my computer with i.e. a new video card (or any replacable component) have a chance to run run the game on full settings, or atleast close.

Thanks to any who takes time to answer and guide me in the right direction ^^

Your graphics card is definitely the thing that’s holding you back the most, since it’s only a lower end card and you’re running at 1080p resolution, which is a pretty demanding resolution to game at. I too would recommend at least a 660 or better for a decent increase in performance (and settings).

Before buying a new graphics card however always make sure your power supply can handle the upgrade, since a higher end card will have higher requirements (not just in terms of wattage, but also amps on the 12v rail). If your current setup is a prebuilt system, then the PSU is more likely to be of lower wattage and/or a low quality brand, so it’s extra important to check the PSU specs and replace it if necessary.

There are various sites on the internet that can tell you what brands + models of PSU’s are good/decent and which should be avoided – if you find your PSU is the latter, then I would not recommend upgrading your GPU without also replacing the PSU.

With a better graphics card your CPU will still be a limiting factor – it’s not a bad CPU, but it’s only a hyper-threaded dual core, so it will be more of a limiting factor than a firstgen i5 of the 700 series would be, since it has only half the physical cores. The areas where you will notice this CPU limitation the most will be in busy areas, like WvW, cities, large dynamic events, etc. You could upgrade the CPU to a 700 model if your motherboard supports it, possibly even an i7 800, but upgrading any further would require a new motherboard as well, since they changed the socket for sandy and ivy bridge. Personally though I would upgrade the GPU first and then go from there.

I don’t know how it would do on full settings, but it would certainly have better performance with an updated graphics card. The 440 isn’t one of the high performance gaming cards. It’s more of a high-end media card that also works for games.

If you do some research, you can probably find a good upgrade card that’s not going to break the bank. For nVidia cards, look for model numbers that end in x60 or higher, to get the gaming cards. (460 or higher, 560 or higher, 660 or higher, etc).

If you want to try ATI cards, the models you want to look for will all have hundreds digits above 5. So cards like a 5670, 5870, 6770, 6870, and so on.

Just ignore any card without a 6 at the beginning as they all cost roughly the same while the 6 means current generation, 5 previous, etc. So hypothetically a 660 is about as powerful as a 570, since the first number is the generation whereas the second is the tier. The highest is the 690, but no one really needs that kind of power, the next down is the famous 680, then 670 (what I have), and 660. If budget is important to you then go with the 660.

It’s not as simple as just buying anouther video card as you will need a new power supply I’m almost 100% sure of this as the GT440 only takes like 56 watts) to go with it and then comes the question of will it fit in your PC case. So a link to the exact PC you have would help, or more specs like what PC case, and power supply you have.

Thank you all for great feedback tips and tricks. This certainly made things easier for me.
Most likely I will get a new power supply and a gfx card.

Thanks again!
