I’m hooked up with a new broadband modem and can’t get through the firewall. The message says I can’t log into the server and points to security as a possible cause. I’ve allowed GW2 to be accepted in Norton firewall (oh, how I hate norton) and I have my firewall set medium on my Windows (I’m running 8 ). I’ve restarted my computer and am at a loss. I’m not good at this kind of stuff to begin with so any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Can you say the exact errormessage. a vague use of the word ‘security’ can also means you got a new IP-adress and need to re-authenticate your account.

Also please tell us the brand and model of the modem. With some of them you need to configure the device itself a bit.

Sure!

“The game client is unable to gain access to the log in server at this time. This is most commonly caused by firewall or router settings, security applications, or connecting through a campus network. For additional support, please visit http://support.guildwars2.com

ok, unfortunally, I can’t find a usermanual for this one with screenshots of the internal interface, but I have found that by default this modem blocks all special ports.
’There’s a Firewall Security Level setting for for gateway, and I was using the Maximum Security, which blocks all ports.’

Hopefully someone else here who has that modem can help you with exact instructions how to fine tune the settings inside the modem. You can always contact Comcast and ask them for help. You can inform them that you need to have the following ports open: ports 80, 443, 6112 and port 6600 (both inbound and outbound, unrestricted access)

good luck!

First get rid of Norton, it’s so bloated it slows you system down. Install Windows Security essentials. See if you can disable the firewall in the modem. If that’s not an option make sure that all the ports the game needs are forwarded, I think there are four of them, google It, can’t remember the exact port numbers. Also if you are connecting wirelessly try connecting with a eithernet cable from the modem to your PC if this solve your problem then the wireless part of your modem may be bad exchange it, I have read somewhere that some of the Comcast modem have problems with the wifi

Thanks!

It dawned on me that I set my firewall settings too high on the modem when you mentioned Maximum Security. I set it to “typical” setting and can now get on the game.

The Universe is now back in balance.

I really appreciated your down to earth response.

Thanks again!

Yaaaaay :P

Also, Feirlista’s comment bout norton is right. Norton is way too heavy for the cause. I haven’t touched it in some times cause the reports are the same, but a year or 4 ago Norton could use up to 25% of a systems capacity’s. For a firewall/virusscanner that is way too much. Specially when there are good alternatives that are just as good AND free. So would also suggest to give norton the boot.

I’ve been using Norton for some time now; they have made many improvements since 2010 to reduce its footprint. I’ve never seen it come anywhere near 25%.

With that said. MSE and the MS firewall are great tools as well and if i decide to drop Norton this year, it will be for that.

I wanted to add – since you are using Norton’s firewall feature – you should disable the Windows firewall. Just like antivirus; only one software firewall is necessary.

Norton is junk, Buy Kaspersky Internet Security is a great all round anti virus, firewall, ad/spam blocker protection with hourly updates. Plus it instant check web links and downloads for trojans etc when clicked.
