So, basically I’ve been building a new PC and I would like some views on this and if it’d be decent for GW 2 (WvW especially) and many other games like Crysis 3 and Metro, TERA.

Tower: Coolermaster Trooper Black Full Tower Gaming Case

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Hero, Intel Z87 Chipset, SLI and CrossFireX support

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K, Haswell, 3.5GHz, Quad Core with HT, 8MB Cache – Overclocked @ 4.4Ghz

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Hydro

RAM: 16GB (2×8GB) Corsair Vengeance Pro Silver, 2133MHz

Graphics Card: 6GB EVGA GTX Titan SC, 876MHz GPU, 2688 Cores, 6008MHz GDDR5

PSU: 850W Corsair Pro HX. Modular, 80PLUS Gold, 90% Efficiency

SSD: 256GB Samsung 840 Pro, Read 540MB/s, Write 520MB/s

HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda, SATA 6Gb/s, 7200rpm, 64Mb Cache

Soundcard: Asus Xonar Essence STX, Audiophile Sound Card

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit

Just a note, the only reason I’m getting an 850W PSU is purely if I decide to add anything else in the future.

Thanks!

Hi I’m getting a Ferrari, do you think it’ll do well on a highway? Make people feel their rigs are inadequate why don’t ya.

Of course it’s going to do great in most games with the only limiting factor being the resolution of your display(s). You have an overclocked top of the line Intel CPU, a flipp’n nVidia Titan and a large SSD.

Assuming you aren’t putting it up on a wall of monitors and pick your culling settings I don’t see why you won’t get 30fps in WvW zergs.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Haha, sorry! This is just my second build and I wanted something that will show things how they’re meant to be shown!

I’m currently running on an AMD Phenom II x4 @ 3.5Ghz, 4GB RAM, GTX 570 and 1TB HDD with an Asus D1 soundcard. I wanted something MUCH more, so I put this together. I just didn’t wanna buy it and regret it.

Thanks for the input!

That’s a pretty top-notch rig that should, on paper at least, run GW2 as smooth as silk. But, and this is a big but, there is no guaranty.

I would do some research on the bin numbers of your CPU before you get it. Some bins will overclock better than others(vcore).
You should be ok to get 30fps in WvW depending on what your settings are and resolution.
Why get a titan when you can get a 780 which has pretty much the same performance(oc) and is way way cheaper?

I suppose it’s just me being a perfectionist and disregarding things like this haha.

I could get the Titan overclocked, or would that be taking it too far?

Haha funny enough I was looking around and saw your forum signature and wondered if you’d reply here!

Are you sure on this? Is there a big difference between the 780 and Titan or not? What about the 3GB vs. 6GB?

Sorry I’ve never really gone into much focus on graphics cards!

Thanks!

Skyrim mod… HD textures and heavy AA. nods I would go for GTX780 and get those extra for watercooling.

Custom loop is about $400-$500 range for your platform.

There is a lot of wasted money there.

If your going to get that MB, you will be paying for the extras. One of those extras is a higher end onboard audio. You then add in a sound card which make one of the extras your paying for irrelevant. Pretty much all of the z87 boards are going to perform (gaming) relatively the same, so I can’t really see paying for a pricier one unless you simply must have it for the asethetics.

Tbh this seems more of wanting peen spec rig vs wanting actual performance rig.

The reason I’m getting a soundcard is because it will be hooked up to my home entertainment system and through a lot of research many people recommended to stay away from onboard and keep with a dedicated soundcard.

I wanted space for upgrading and to be honest, I haven’t kept up with what’s being released PC-wise for the last two and a half years. This is my first PC build, the one I currently own was prebuild.

Tbh this seems more of wanting peen spec rig vs wanting actual performance rig.

Going over the top a bit there? Why would I build a PC for peen? I’m just trying to get at least somewhat near the best I can. As I just said, this is my first build hence I asked a question regarding this PC. People can recommend things or say change this or change that.

Thanks.

Sorry about the double-post.

I think I’m going to take off the sound card for now, taking Essence’s advice. Also, after a bit of looking around, I was thinking about getting 2x 4GB Superclocked GTX 770 SLI instead of a GTX 780 or GTX Titan.

Any more opinions are welcome, thanks for all the replies so far.

The i5 4670K will perform the same for gaming as the i7 it’s not worth the extra $100, 16 GB of memory for gaming is 8GB of wasted money and you will see no differance with the 2133 memory over 1600MHz.
Bad choice going SLI I would recomend a single 780 it’s more card than most people need.

1) I wouldn’t recommend getting haswell. Look at performance gain of haswell vs ivy bridge per dollar. You can put that money in better places for a gaming rig like the video card.

2) Get a reference GTX 780 rather than superclocked/signature/whatever. If you plan to liquid cool your rig, it’ll be cheaper and easier to get backplates and just overclock it yourself. The only exception to this rule would be EVGA Classifieds or MSI Lightnings if you have the cash. And yes, 780 over Titan unless you plan to use several monitors in SLI or play in 3D

3) 2133 MHz ***IS*** much better and noticeable than 1600 MHz when you have it set up right, and does help with some games in their performance. Especially if you have a solid amount of RAM to put them onto a ramdisk. Ever played GW2 straight from your RAM? It loads and plays like a dream.

4) 16GB vs 8GB is up to you… do you do lots of multitasking? Plan to use a ramdisk?

If you’re like me and you want to play the latest games at high resolutions like 5760×1080 in 3D surround or 1920×1080 at 120Hz with seamless fps, heed my words. SLI is worth it.

I wouldn’t have the money to do a full liquid cool if I was to buy this PC I’m afraid. Would you still recommend I keep away from the Superclocked versions of these cards?

Never played it straight from my RAM and I’ve never heard of this being done. Atm I’m stuck on 4GB RAM.

4) 16GB vs 8GB is up to you… do you do lots of multitasking? Plan to use a ramdisk?

Yes and yes.

Would you recommend getting 2x 4GB GTX 770 SLI or buy a single GTX 780 and wait until I can afford another to SLI them?

Thanks for the replies everyone, I appreciate it!

I think I said nothing about using Ivy or Haswell just that the i7 is not worth the money over the i5 for gaming.
For most people ramdisc is over their head so their nothing to gain from 2133 MHz memory. The memory he picked has fairly bad 11 timmings so the 1600MHz with 9 timmings would game the same. I have 16GB of 2133 memory in my PC the programs I use eat memory up mine is down clocked to 1866 with crazy 7 timmings with a slight voltage increase (1.56)
Since he has never stated what monitor/monitors he is going to use for most people right back to a single 780 is more than they need. I run 3 1080p monitors with Xfire 6970’s and have no reason to upgrade at this time.
For playing this game on ramdisc I have no reason to all my games I play are loaded on a Samsung 830.

You really need to post what monitor/monitors you are going to be using to get help on the video card part.
Also again the memory looks nice on paper but their no reason to get more than 8GB of 1600 MHz memory. If the game is loaded on a solid state drive you can do alot of stuff on the side and never use 6GB of memory.

Just a note, the only reason I’m getting an 850W PSU is purely if I decide to add anything else in the future.

Thanks!

the titan has full load power consumption 782 watts in SLI , from this link http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/5409/evga-geforce-gtx-titan-6gb-superclocked-video-cards-in-sli/index21.html

so 850 watts are TOO few for your pc if you decide to add one more for sli in the future , you need more POWER for sli .

alone the titan consumes 500+ watt in full load

Take it from som1 who knows. Get a 780. Even better get a Classified or a Lightning. they use custom PCB’s and can attain muc better OC’s. My one runs at 1254mhz on the core at 1.175v and 7200mhz memory clock. And i havnt even found the limitso f the memory clock yet .on Air ofc.

Other than that i might sugest getting a 3770k instead of a 4770k if ur using a AIO water cooler. Even a H100i will have difficulty with a 4770k if the voltage is even close to 1.2v. A 3770k however shouldnt be a problem.
now if u were to buidl ur own custom water loop, THEN a 4770k would be ok

Oh and if u r thinking of SLI’ing a 780 or Titan, depending on how much juice ur CPU eats u may need more than 850w PSU. Though on a Ivybridge or Haswell CPU you should be fine.

RAM, 2133mhz is fine (try get CL9) though if ur gunna use RAMDISK’s u will want 32gb. 16gb is enough for small ramsdisks but putitng a whole game into it will requir 32gb.

HOWEVER.
This is GW2, GW2 has the worst optimised game engine ,for what it is being asked to do, i have seen in a long time. Even with a system like mine LA can be 30-35fps when busy and WvW can get as low as 20 FPS. When the game engine isnt breaking its own back a single 780 is more than enough graphicaly.

I run GW2 with the below settings.
Res:3200×1800 Downsample.
Max settings on all except Reflections (terrain and Sky) ‘all’ is bugged.
Supersampling: ON
Everything else on.
Culling: Charatcer Limit Highest, Texture Limit Medium.

EDIT: Please note, the link in the post above. That system is using a 3960X processor which is also OC’ed. Like my own 3930k these Sandy-E CPU’s are HUGE power hogs, nothing at all like the Ivy and haswell chips that sip power in comparison. Even so, u dont want ur PSU running high usuage all the itme so the point stands. Allocate 300w per 780 + what ever ur CPU uses, then add some extra for buffer, then make a decission on PSU. As i said though..850w should be fine for a haswell or ivy system with SLI 780’s/Titans.
