Hi

I am looking to buy a new computer very soon (probably within the next couple of days) I have already chosen the specs I want and I was wandering whether they would handle GW2

The specs are :
Motherboard : ASUS Z87-K – USB2.0, USB3.0, SATA6 + XFIRE
CPU : Intel Core i5 4670K – 4 Cores @ 3.4Ghz (overcloked to 4.2 Ghz)
Ram : 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz – PATRIOT VIPER V3 RED
Graphics Card : nVIDIA GeForce GTX760 2GB

I was also wondering how much of an effect will the motherboard have on the fps, I concentrated mostly on a decent graphics cars however I am not sure whether I should focus more on the mother board.

I wont be necessarily be playing in max settings at all time but I am just curious would I be able to get over 60 fps in places like Lion’s Arch at medium settings.

Thanks

Short answer 0 difference.
Longer answer z87 chipset, YES holds memory YES, PCI-E 3.0 YES, you could spend $200 more on the motherboard and get 0 FPS increase.

With what you are getting it will run the game about as good as it will run.

For over 60FPS not really going to happen no matter what you buy. But you will play the game just as good as anybody else.

The video card will not be the problem this game is just bad/kitten the CPU your getting is about the best you can really get without spending a SL of more money or very little performance gains.

If your going to spend any more money on it up the video card to a 770 for other games.

Giimy a few mins to find the vid …
EDIT: Found it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeuJAOVRoA0

Bassicaly u could get a Asus itx board (low end) vs a Asus maximus Extreme (super high end) and the FPS difference at with other hardware the same and the clock speeds the same, will be roughly 2-5% ..so maybe 1-2 FPS at most. The price:performance is sooooooo bad. Note in GW2 chances are it would make 0 difference, the FPS in the situations where u want mroe FPs will be to low for 2-5% to make any difference on the FPS. i.e 20fps + 2% = 20.4 fps

motherboard choice is mainly decided by 2 factors : Required features (sata, PCI-E, onboard sound etc), and Visual asthetics.

As for ur rig. That seems like a perfectly capable system. if its prebuilt just make sure the PSU has enough room for future upgrades.

Didn’t think about it being prebuild if it is make sure they use a high quality power supply and not a low quality fire hazard. Maybe you should list that also.

Thats a good setup. But I would like to know what the full model number on that z87 Motherboard is. I have found one major issue with most sub $200 Z87 boards, the PCI-E Lanes are all shared at the CPU/NB and you can get 16x/0/0, 8x/8x/0 or 8x/4x/4×. so if you decide to SLI GPUs, or install another PCI-E card (TVtuner, Network Adapter, HW Raid card) it will cut your GPU’s Lanes from 16x down to 8x at a bare min.

While most people will say that 8x for the GPU is fine, I found a bug on my Z87-G45 board with my HD7790. When I had that card running at 8x, the GPU would max at 100% and the CPU would only be used at 30%. remove the additional PCI-E Cards and the issue goes away.

I am currently waiting for a BIOS/EFI update to correct the issue from MSI, but still something to consider.

and to answer your question about FPS based on the MB, its not as much about the performance the MB brings but more so about its stability and features (such as 16x/16x/8x PCI-E Support). Same thing when considering Power Supply Units for your system.

The thing to rememeber about trying to get a LGA 1150 motherboard that has x16 x16 support is that they do that via a bridge chip, that introduces a little input lag into the picture, somthing u may or may not notice. pro gamers do notice it and is why they tend ot stear clear of such things. if they really want x16 x16 they go for a LGA 2011 rig.

My issue comes down to the # of PCI-E slots and cards I need to use on my Desktop.

My HD7790
My 520x-DA 10Gb Network Adapter for my Direct connections to my ESXi host
My Intel quad 1000Pro Adapter for when I fail my desktop over for ESXi Lab work.

That setup puts my Desktop in 8x/4x/4x Mode and CRUSHES the performance on the GPU/CPU.

Remove both the Network Cards and Boom almost perfect Performance.

That sounds like you had no clue what to look for when buying your motherboard. All of the specs for the G45 motherboard are clearly listed. With what you have you clearly need something like this that would run 16×8×8 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131998
That motherboard will also run at a true 16×16.
I don’t think he’s going to be doing anything but gaming,
He can add a network card in a pci lane or dongle or power line.
Your throwing stuff in that was never mentioned by the OP

Do you guys think it would be better to get a bad power supply and maybe look to get

NO!!!!! NO NO NO!!!!

Uneducated people may lead you to think it’s ok, but it is NOT! If you want to skimp on ANYTHING in your build, skimp on anything BUT the power supply. The power supply is possibly the most crucial part of any system. You skimp on that to “get better parts”, you have a good chance of frying those parts that you spent more on by cheaping out on the power supply.

If you need help regarding a certain power supply’s quality, just post the brand and model and I will give you any appropriate information I have on that specific unit. Just be sure to post here or PM me and I will get back to you when I am able.

For your build though, I would recommend a 600~ watt to save some money with since saving seems to be what you want. The 600~ will have plenty of power to run your system fully overclocked no probs.

The i7 will not help much but a low quality power supply will hurt a lot.
You don’t need the XFX 850 that you picked the XFX 650 would have plenty of power. That’s a good brand choice made by Seasonic.

That PC won’t use but about 400 Watts during a full system stress test so 550/ 650 is enough overhead and the 650 will allow you to upgrade to a high end video card in the future.

RIGHT BACK to my statement here.
That is pretty much junk look for a Seasonic or XFX in the 550/650 watt range.

Main other concern is if you are buying 2 X 4GB of the memory you might be better off posting a link to where you are buying this from.

i have had a few junk power supplies. they use poor quality parts, which means the advertised wattage isnt real. They also tend to only last a year or 2.

pc power and cooling make the best power supplies (in my opinion). They actually make their own power supplies instead of purchasing them from a 3rd party adn slapping their name on it, they use high quality parts, their advertised wattage is way under what they can really push, and they come with a 10 year warrantee.

Hate to tell you this, but OCZ owns PCP&C these days after their buyout, and they also do not make their own units, nor have they ever. Purchasing a newer PCP&C unit you may get a Seasonic, Super Flower, Win-Tact, or Sirtec depending on the unit you purchase. The older Silencer 610 models were Sparkle (FSP).

They kept the PCP&C name even after the buyout as a “sub-division” or whatever you want to call it of OCZ, I’m assuming they did that to keep the familiar name for customers.

For warranty under the PCP&C name I believe all the units are 5year warranties. I could be wrong, but I believe they are all 5year. This is the reason I tend to stick with straight Seasonic or Corsair units (depending on pricing between the 2 equal units), as Seasonic make their own and their name is attributed over @ JonnyGuru as a go to for quality units from a top name company. Then of course with Corsair units you have the Seasonic units then the ChannelWell Tech units, which have excellent rating right alongside the Seasonic units over @ JonnyGuru. Which is why I have no problem recommending any Corsair unit, and quite the majority of Seasonics.
