hello,
I bought this game a day or two ago but it has been almost impossible for me to play due to a constant interval of black screens (display driver has stopped responding etc etc..)
I tried all the fixes I found on the forums here but nothing works. I can play for a short while but when I turn my cam too fast or if there is alot happening my game ‘freezes’ after which I get a black screen. This black screen goes away after awhile, the game is running for afew seconds before the next black screen comes. Sometimes no less then 6 or 7 times in a row. Sometimes I can ‘fix’ it for a short while by alt+tabbing (this takes a LONG time since nothing responds well during the black screens) but often it just crashes completely.
This is extremely annoying when trying to do quest events!
I’ve tried everything, updated my drivers and everything but it’s just not working, I’m desperate!
(this isn’t the only game it does it with, it only does it when I play skyrim etc)
My pc is pretty good orso I’ve been told (I’m not technical at all, a friend of mine assembled my pc parts together) and I can play graphic heavy games without any lag at all.
I’m getting really frustrated with Nvidia!.
my graphicscard is a GeForce GTX 285.

Hi Draaka – Nvidia just come out with new video card drivers. I know you had said you’re about at the point where you’ve tried everything suggested in the forums, but have you tried a clean installation of the newest drivers yet? And by clean installation I mean completely uninstalling and removing previous driver versions.

I have the exact same problem. I installed (clean) the nevest nvidia drivers. No help. I tried cleaninstalling the beta drivers. Same story.

It’s a shot in the dark, but have you guys run msconfig and disabled all your startup items? It’s the easiest way to remove the possibility of 3rd party software causing issues, or least mostly remove the possibility.
If you don’t know how
click Start
For win7, click in the “search programs and files”/For WinXP, click Run
type in msconfig and hit enter
In the new window that comes up, click on startup, and uncheck every single box
Hit apply/OK and reboot
Try to run the game when your PC comes on, without running anything else at the same time.

Yes. No help. I actually reinstalled win7, and the ONLY program I have now, is gw2. Still, freeze and crash.
I have the same issue. Sometimes the black screening is more sporadic and sometimes it is successive, seriously affecting my gameplay. Most of the time I have a short period of black screen with game sounds in the background. Sometimes I have my desktop with game sounds in the background and game cursor but inability to do anything (but wait for the game to reappear). Sometimes I get a CTD and a driver error. I have looked at every forum (and there are many spanning multiple graphics cards and configurations). I have even talked with NVidia, who recommended the clean install of the newest drivers, which I have done.
I only have this issue playing GW2, have had it since beta. What is ANet doing to resolve the issue? Clearly from the multitude of forum posts that are not limited to NVidia, it requires attention. Personally, I am annoyed that I paid for a game I can’t return, and worse can’t enjoy, because of this.
I don’t want to hear about antialiasing or driver updates; let’s hear a real solution, assuming you can find one.

Same thing here and have had the issue since beta with GW2. No other issues with other games. Tried a new install of Windows also. Sure wish someone would fix the issue.

Something interesting I found is that when I used a 4g hotspot, because my cable was down, whenever it disconnected, the screen would turn black, which makes me think there could be two different timea the screen goes black. It may be your internet losing connectivity as well if youre tethering your phone or using a hotspot, or maybe even just losing connectivity and it may not be your video card at all. Just a shot in the dark.

Same problems here. I have a msi gtx570. Tried anything i could think and read about it. This system (and video card) is rock stable with anything else. Strangely, the crash occurred mostly in pvp. I’d even give a try with gw2 for mac, a Mac Pro and this card: it crashed the sane way!
Only way gw2 is playable : a little down clock of the video card with msi afterburner. Until this week it was running great, now the crash reappeared, got to set a further down clock to play…

You know, i’m not trying to rage or anything.. but you would think that with all the patches that have been released SOMETHING would have been done by now to eliminate this problem because it literally renders the game almost unplayable. If I can handle Skyrim or SWTOR and even Borderlands 2 online.. then I should have no problem playing this game.

OP I had similar issues with the same card in the past, it turned out the cards are notoriously faulty (not saying yours is just yet) Did you ever get a pink screen of death?
Did you check the normal yadda yadda dust, clean drivers, no background programs etc etc?
Can you also manually turn the fans up to 100% and see if the problems go away?
Just trying to eliminate possibilities.

There’s also this https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Crashing/page/13#post250670
But since you mentioned it crashes in other games I asked the other questions.

I am so frustrated… i have been waiting for 5 years for GW2, i have been the whole betas and stress test with my old laptop playing in low graphic amazingly happy, then i bought a new PC with the Nvidia gtx 66 ti, love this card all games runs smooth and amazing, but then GW2 started crashing since the first time i installed it, i have uninstalled the client then install it again, still crashes, sometimes only black screen or white or red but the PC is locked up i need to hard restart it, sometimes is a short black out noise still on then it comes back with really low fps then the whole pc start being “jumpy” mouse, sound everything that needs to move is laggy and jumpy so i need to restart the PC, all drivers of the GPU has been clean install it and bla bla bla… the issue is with the lovely GW2 people…. ANET please do something about it…i need GW2 sooo bad.

Same, I did the clean update for my Nvidia driver and I still get the black screen flicker + lag afterwards.
Another side issue, is the fact that my keyboard and mouse USB would shut down from time to time now. Only if I was playing GW2. Not from other games or regular pc usage.

I run Nvidia myself since they tend to be very nice cards, but a long standing issue has been their current drivers are usually garbage. I run a step behind current most times, and on install for this game I was referred to a third party driver for my card that works wonderfully. When I recieved the notice of the latest Nvidia drivers I followed my previous policy and ignored it.
Not fresh in my mind what triggered the driver referral in game but it was likely an autodetect on settings in the video options.
The only issue I currently have at all that may be graphic related is the occasional loss of focus on mouse, hittin ESC and/or holding down mouse buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously (usually this is a soft pointer reset on mouse drivers) has fixed this so far.

Chiming in.
At first, someone said to revert to 295 for my 8800GT, telling me it was the most stable version for my GPU. No luck.
A few people told me it could be an overheating problem. I found that my GPU was hitting 93°C, give or take. Dusted out my computer, and it lowered by 5°C, though I had no compressed air. I manually set the fan to max speed, which dropped the temperature significantly. Then I lowered all my graphics settings in-game to minimum.
I still got black screen at 68-70°C. Overheat is not the issue.
While the 8800GT is a bit old (but still very effective), the rest of my system has been upgraded within the year.

Arena Net clearly couldn’t care less.
C.
Can we get another dev post here to see if they’re any closer to fixing this? I can’t even play the game, still. I go to hit “play” and I just get a corrupted window and a useless-until-I-hard-reboot computer. This update really just kittened everything up and I’m getting a little bit kitten now since I’ve tried every pseudo-solution, submitted a ticket, even messed around with a bunch of different router settings, it’s unreal that I can’t play a game I dropped 120$ on.
At least I can stare at my Rytlock figure? The way things are being handled I’m starting to think the same as Cailais. Anet’s already got our money, who cares now?

I just pulled an 8800 out of a friends pc and put a 420 from his older machine in and this problem went away, it would be nice if we could get a list of all the cards having this issue. Kinda sucks but A-net may not be worried about it since it is basically an older card, if newer ones have the same issue then maybe we’ll get it solved. If you are liek me and luckily near a lot of used pc shops, you may be able to pick up a cheap card (such as the 420) that will work for now. Not optimal but you’d be able to play.

Guys, please try the newest nVidia betas, 306.63, and post your results in that thread also:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/New-nVidia-driver-306-63-Beta
Since the start, GW2 has had numerous problems with nVidia drivers, especially in shader processing, sprites, texture mapping and DX9 memory spooling. I’m sure all these will be addressed, either by driver updates and/or game patches.
