Performance Updates

We‘re always working on the performance of the game with every update, but we have a big batch of improvements coming in this feature pack. We’ve changed the way many of the underlying systems work, making them more cost-effective, which will reduce how often players will be seeing issues caused by performance. This is most notable in large combat situations like WvW and at the PvE world boss events. These improvements affect both the server and client performance, so in these situations, you should see increased frame rates as well!

Does ANYONE have any info on what the details of this is yet?

Why does it matter if it’s “better”? Sounds like they recoded the section in the renderer that handles displaying other players.

So you dont care what they did, just if its better?

Curious from a technical standpoint only. But since none of us have detailed knowledge of the internal structure of the game engine and how it handles non-static or game controlled objects like players, any info given would be mostly meaningless.

This sounds like a restructuring of other player information management and rendering. I don’t think it has much to do with improving multithreading, 64-bit client or any upgrade from Dx9. And if it was something like capping particles or even a setting they would mention that, so to me it sounds like it’s a substantially under the hood change that would be meaningless to describe to the masses.

Well it would be nice if they released benchmarks post-patch, specially for AMD products which really suffer great FPS loss during those events.

Having a benchmark to simulate a 100+ player event would be nice so we can properly compare hardware when upgrading/building for the game.

I think it’ll be a linear increase across the board. The only problem with AMD CPUs is their cores are individually slower than Intel’s. Unless they altered the code to scale with # of cores which I doubt.

We’ll see in two weeks.

yup, we will. And I cant wait. I am ALWAYS interesting in performance gains that involve WvW/Zerg Content, just due to the nature of them. Being able to ‘see’ 80+ players and not take a performance hit would be HUGE. Even if it was something as simple as reducing the effects the character’s have and/or their individual animations.

setting the character limit to highest and the quality to Lowest, yeilds interesting results. So I kinda wonder if something cant be done there to make the models more ‘pretty’ while on that lowest setting, but maybe have them all use the same animation or something for movement/attacks.
