Hi,

So this is my first topic and i’ve previously played GW2 on my macbook white unibody with major lag for the most part and yesterday ordered a new laptop one of the main reasons was to have a better performing PC to tackle the game so I just would like you’re advice on the specs in terms of gameplay and how smooth it will run. I’m sure it will be an improvement on my last laptop but still though id ask actual members.

Thanks

Inspiron 17 5000 Series
Operating System Windows 8.1 (64Bit) Canada MUI
Memory 8GB Single Channel DDR3 1600MHz (8GBx1)
Video Card NVIDIA® GeForce® 840M 2GB DDR3L
Hard Drive 1TB 5400 rpm SATA Hard Drive
Processor 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4210U processor (3M Cache, up to 2.7 GHz)

my only concern would be the CPU…but i’m a little knowledgeable in computers

and before posting, i’m not looking for “you should of gotten this laptop” “that laptop sucks” constructive discussions please.

What is your budget, that will help us make a better suggestion.

that laptop has a couple weak points, but before we go there please answer the above question :-)

oh sorry if I didn’t specify, but i’ve ordered in already and it’s on it’s way. It’s from a new line of dell laptops that I believe just came out as of early may 750$ (CAN) is what I paid for it. I figured unless I build my own from scratch there is bound to be certain aspects of it that could be better. But you can’t really bake your cake and have a piece as well I suppose.

Realistically, sure, I would have said grab a Sager lappy for games, but when it comes down to it, laptop brand won’t affect performance. The Dell you picked out is a good performer, and if it has an expansion slot for an SSD to easily be added, it will transform any slow load times to lightning quick like you bought an even newer pc.

The biggest plus I see is that you ordered an i5 with it instead of an i3, which will help you tremendously in this game. Just, don’t expect to not lag. You may very well see the effect once you find a large group event or WvW.

Overall for a laptop though, it looks good to me.

Thanks! Yeah I figured it was probably not on the list of top gaming laptops but for the price was a major improvement over my late 2009 macbook which technically didn’t even fit the game requirements but I still played and enjoyed the game, having seen my boyfriend play from his desktop (I wanna say HP Pavillion 500 series but not sure) the graphics just made it look like a completely different game, yes ofcourse there will be some lag depending on which part of the map your in or during events but it was to a point where it was stuttering so badly and was afraid my mac would end up shorting out from the fan working overtime.

To tell you the truth, I recently had 2 higher end “gaming lappies” from the ASUS RoG line, I sold one already and may just sell the other, they are expensive, bulky, and simply not worth their form factor IMO unless you need a space saving desktop replacement.

I would prob change a few things from what you ordered, but overall I think what you got is almost ideal for a laptop. Plus, with these ASUS RoG lappies, if I actually use them without a charger, the battery lasts maybe 2 hours only lol depending on how loaded I make the system.

The single channel RAM is the first bad part, though should not affect gaming that much, however some games (not sure if GW2 is one) are affected by memory throughput. The second choice being the U line CPU, the U line in mobile form factors are ultra low voltage and as such tend to have much lower base clocks than the same M line CPU, many times the i3 M line perform better than some i5 U line, though not by much, but that gives you an idea how it changes things.

I think it should do ok in the game, but the biggest thing holding it back will be the CPU, the QM line being the best choice for laptops and GW2. The GPU should be ok, as it is probably only a 1600 × 900 screen, so not many pixels to push.
