Please help: Black screen of death.
The other instructions say to right click on the desktop background and choose “Catalyst Control Center” Well… there is no option to do st :/
Alternatively, you can download and install the latest AMD Catalystâ„¢ Application Profiles to fix this issue.
The latest Application Profiles can always be found here.
After installing these profiles, you must restart your computer for them to take effect.
(Did all that, No change)
Okay so its not my anti-virus either…

Just to clarify, you are running the latest versions of your graphics driver correct?
If not, update those.
If so, let’s check your temperatures just in case. I would suggest using these to check your CPU and GPU temperatures when running GW2:

Your bsod should also give you an error code, what is it?
Ok ok. 1st I’m not too Computer savvy so lets go through this slowly. what is my “bsod”? Also yes I just updated my drivers to make sure.
Bsod, black screen of death. (actually I’m wrong here bsod is a blue screen with a code.)
Usually after that when you restart you pc should give you an error report.
Or you get an error report from the game itself, ArenaNet.log
Well thats just it. the game says its working just fine, nothing is wrong. I will ALT Tab out of the game and every other program will be up and active on my PC. That is why I’m confused. If I click on the game again to go back in, Guild Wars 2 is still a black screen with only background music.

No error reports and nothing I find on Google helps.
Now forgive me if I’m wrong but if my CPU/GPU is overheating wouldn’t my PC air coolant systems freak out? they don’t seem to respond to guild wars 2 anymore than any other game I play…

More than likely yes they would freak out, but I’m also running around with my head cut off because I’m not really sure what else to suggest D=
Perhaps it could be something funky when the game tries to access a certain part of the gw2.dat file on your hard drive, which means that something might be amiss with your hard drive. More than likely though the game would crash, but it doesn’t seem to be doing that.
It could be something with a bad sector of RAM, but normally that would give you a BSOD and restart your computer.
It could be a power supply issue not giving enough ‘juice’ to the GPU, making the screen black, but normally this also shuts down your computer due to lack of power in other areas as well.
Ultimately, your hardware could be all fine, and it is something amiss with the game itself where it has trouble running on your perfectly fine hardware.
Personally, I would try uninstalling the graphics driver, then reinstalling the graphics driver.
You don’t sound the type, but is anything overclocked in your system that might introduce some degree of instability? If so, toss the clocks back to their default values and try to see if the error reproduces itself at stock clocks.

Ok. I got a heat monitoring system. nothing is out of the ordinary or for that matter nothing is running too hot. I un-installed and re-installed the game and it still has the same issue. Got new drivers, still no change.
What process happens 5 to 10 minutes into the game that would cause this?

I’m going to assume that you know the proper thermal limits of your hardware and that you have installed the latest and greatest graphics drivers from AMD.
Here is the next thing I would check, perhaps it’s got something to do with your power supply failing or simply not giving enough ‘juice’ to all of the parts of the computer like it used to in the past. I was hoping you could give us the specifications of some of the key parts of your system. At a minimum:
The power supply.
When you purchased your computer to get an estimated age of the power supply.
The CPU.
The GPU.
—less important from here on—
The motherboard.
Number of Fans.
Number of DvD/CD/Blu-ray players.
Number of hard drives.

Hi Jimbob – There’s a few troubleshooting steps you can try if you haven’t already as there are a few different resolutions that come with this issue:
- Clean installation of the latest video card drivers
- Remove router/disable SPI Firewall (less common but this has been known to fix black screen issues)
- Delete local.dat file + Repair
- DirectX update
- Delete gw2cache folder
- Changing your in-game resolution
If you need specific instructions for how to do any of these steps please let me know!
Hi Ashley
I would like to know where is the gw2cache folder is and how do I delete/repair them?
Don’t listen to anything people have said so far. Revert back to the 12.10 drivers, and you’ll be fine.
The 13.X drivers gave me the exact same problems, it’s a known issue. Go back to 12.X drivers and you’ll have no problems. Speaking from experience, haven’t had a crash since. Until AMD and GW2 get along with 13.X drivers, I’m not updating.
Check your driver version, I can put money on it you have the 13.X driver. I reinstalled Windows 8, then installed the 12.10 drivers for the XFX R7770 card.
Here’s the link to the 12.X drivers:

Hi dabeedo – You can delete this folder by doing the following:
1. In Windows, press the “Start” button and locate the “Search programs and files” bar at the bottom of the start menu.
2. Type in “temp” with the percent sign symbol in place of the quotation marks.
3. Press “Enter” and a new window should appear with the location of “C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp”
4. Locate the folder labeled "gw2cache-{RANDOM NUMBERS} and delete it.
