Poor FPS on decent pc?
I’ve considered that it’s possibly because the game will only make use of 2 of my cpu cores and AMD cpu’s don’t have the greatest single core performance, but I’d like to know if I can get a better experience out of the game
There is sadly nothing you can do to help the performance accept overclock but it doesn’t help it much. I had a AMD 8150 oc to 4.5ghz and still my game suffered. I switched to intel i7 3930k and the performance boost was amazing. As you mentioned the AMD cpu has horrible single core performance and GW2 runs on a single core. The only way to get better framerates is to switch to intel. You could get the intel i7 3770 or the 4770 for better gaming experience. Or you could get the 3930k like mine. Hope that helps.
GW2 doesn’t run on a single core, it just doesn’t use many of them and the game is limited to how fast the main thread can run. Sadly for AMD FX based CPU’s approach of many slower cores hurts this game since the game only generates about 3 cores worth of work.
RIP City of Heroes

Not really … Guild wars uses 4 cores…. so FX will beat i3…
MY benchmarks
2 cores usage 100%
3 cores usage 100%
4 cores usage 80-90%
6 cores usage 50-65%
I tried with i7 3770 and same droops happens … WHY? poor server optimization
Solution?
OC FX 6300 to 3,8GHz+ (you will be able with stock cooler)
Turb off bios
set 1.25-1.275vcore 3,8Ghz you can go for 4,0GHz with 1,3V-1.325V.
HPC on
All power saver – off
Set character limit to lowest
with i7 just set character limit to lowest
better network you get you better performance i tried and it work better….
PS: When you played with FX 8150 it was probably poor optimization for FX
have a nice day
Gods! It’s not poor server optimization!
Not all software is (actually very few are) written to take advantage of all the CPU power present in a multi-core CPU. Also any single thread (the game has over 40 but only 1/4 use more than 10% of a single core’s performance) can’t use more than 100% of a single core. And that’s why single core performance matters and why more lower performance cores like those found in the AMD FX architecture doesn’t make the game perform as well as Intel’s fewer but much higher performance cores.
RIP City of Heroes
Dont you understand me? It is not CPU/GPU who is bottlenecking … it is server.
I did test and as you can see this game use 4 cores.
Intel has better Single CPU performance but it is not that much faster…
EDIT
At first i thought that overclocking my FX from 3,5Ghz to 4,5GHz will boost FPS in GW2… but i dont get boost in LA even CPU usage goes from 60-65% to 50%…

Or you could get the 3930k like mine. Hope that helps.
A i5 : 2500k,2550k,3570k,,4670k, or i7: 2600k,2700k,3770k,4770k would all be great choices.
I would never recommend som1 to buy a 3930k or other LGA 2011 chip for pure gaming tbh., they’re not cheap and 90% of games wont use all the threads. That said, ithe 3930k is still a beastly CPU
A for AMD vs Intel, we all know Intel has the lead in gaming, so that a done to death argument.

Yeap i5 2/3/4*** is enough.
But still P/P athlon x4 or FX8320/6300

Duh! It’s well know that the game only uses 3 to 4 cores worth of CPU performance but you are still limited by the performance of a single core in that environment (running 3 to 4 cores worth of work). Most of the other threads still need to synchronize back to the main (or secondary from the POV of CPU usage) thread at some point during each frame.
The fundamental design criteria that the AMD CPU engineers were shooting for was similar performance between one FX module (that’s two cores) to an Intel core with HT when both are running two threads. Anything other than that scenario the Intel core wins big. That is why and Intel desktop i5 or i7 beats the snots out of an AMD FX in this game when there are large crowds of other players about. I’m talking stock clocks here, no overclocking voodoo, no single core turbo benchmarks.
And how do you measure their server’s performance? Ping? That’s a combination of their server and the performance of all the hops from there to your system.

I highly doubt that. Buddy has a hugely overclocked i3 at around 4.3 GHz, third generation and it slams my FX-8350. I bet at stock clocks it does better.

you can overclock and fx6300 till 4.2 ghz with an decent pc housing with enough vents i oced it to that with an antec 903 (5 vents)

it also depends with the amd vs intel arguments when the fx 8350 came out they tested it against the latest intel then they where both on the same performace line but when it came to streaming amd was superior alot less fps drops then an intel
@ op hey i have an fx 6300 aswel running at stock
8gb ram
and an hd7790 oc edition 2gb
gw2 installed on an ssd drive
and my performance is ok
i have like 80 fps in pve zones 35-60 in wvw i big fights it drops to like 28 but still playable on medium high settings

Overclocked i3 to 4,3Ghz?
I have 3,5GHz at 1.188vcore – thats why i dont OC it… cause it has great P/W.
For other games 3,0Ghz is enough but only need 1.095V

Your definition of ‘big fights’ must be absolutely pathetic.

Well, for Guild Wars 2, an i3 at 4.3 GHz is great.
Yesh yesh, we know that Intel is top of the class here, it’s common knowledge. And we also know that Intel gets better performance for wattage, you can use a Kill-A-Watt to test for yourself. (Eg. AMD’s FX-8350 generates around two-thirds as much performance per watt compared to Intel’s Core i7-3770K. Gap widens in Intel’s favor once overclocked, 8350 becomes far less performance per watt)
That’s why you must overclock if your CPU and motherboard are able to, because, you know…. ’murica.

Don’t know if troll…. Anywho, case only matters to an extent of having enough airflow, outside of that how many vents you have on a case is irrelevant assuming your case fans are decent.

P/W intel is better…
I am running 3,5GHz at 1.18Vcore (stock 1.325Vcore)
- 4,5GHz 1.375Vcore (stock 1.42Vcore for 3,8GHz)
actually 3,5Ghz can handle GW2 just fine.
how did your friend get i3 to 4,3GHZ?
(edited by XFlyingBeeX.2836)
Some of the i3’s can be overclocked rather well via the base clock + limited multiplier.
Its not really somthing u can do with most of the latest K i5’s and i7’s becouse they just dont like base clock OC’s that much, not big ones atleast.
However there are always a few that do. The i7 3820 for example is not a k model but can hit 4.5ghz+ via base clock changes and maxing out the limited multiplier, simularly to what u would do with an i3.
