My computer seems to crash quite randomly when playing certain games, namely GW2 or other graphic intensive games like Tera/Dawn of War 2. By crash here I mean not just the game, but the whole computer. The screen goes black/white/red/sometimes teal, then the sound gets stuck, and then either it shuts down by it self or I had to do it. On rare cases, it just goes black and gets back to normal after displaying `dvi/hdmi not detected` like as if the monitor wasnt connected.

Apparent changes were noted when I changed my old nvidia card ( I think it was GT 320) to GTX 670. At first I thought it was PSU problems, so I switched from 500 to 750(should be more than enough, I run everything at stock speed). But it seems the problem persists.

Its kinda annoying since I can play other games just fine (LoL, Dota 2), or even in general there`s no display problem or anything. So Im pretty clueless at where is the main source of the problem, is it the monitor? faulty GPU? Does Motherboard affect GPU in any way? My motherboard is originally a prebuilt-MB for Gateway dx 4840, so its quite old in that aspect.

Anyways, I attached the arenanet log here and hope I can find some answers about these random crashes/restart.

The above was on the 3rd line of the crash log, others on this forums and other GW2 related forums seem to have also had this same crash, from reading them they seem to think its a DirectX issue, you could try re-installed directx and see if that helps,

Its possible that it could be a MB issue, but id start with software drivers etc before looking down the road of hardware issues, try update your GFX drivers, and try reinstall DirectX and see if this helps at all.

I suspect it might be correlation between my MB and GPU (if there`s such a thing), because I once even started from a clean slate, wiping clean my hdd and started from zero, so software might be less of a problem.
When I did that, there were less, or none as far as I remember about the crashes. But lately the crashes started to haunt me again.
I still use the `stable` Nvidia 3.14 drivers, since the newer ones has problems with other games I’m running.
As a step of precaution, I`ll try look into reinstalling directx and see if there`s any change

Did you get anywhere with this?

I also seem to have a similar problem with my computer crashing when running GW2 always seems to be related to the graphics card, which has occasionally given warnings implying that the driver ran into an error, but i have tried with a complete reinstall on a separate HD and with a new Grahics card (Radeon 7870) i realise it’s a different brand of GPU but the problem sounds similar.

Strangely I have encountered absolutely no problems when running on Intel HD 3000 graphics built into the CPU and motherboard. I had thought this may cause interference with my GPU but it is impossible to remove it and it should not cause conflicts with my current setup.

Havent tried reinstalling directx recently but will give that ago. Aside from the directx i am considering upgrading to a new motherboard possibly new CPU while im at it.

Emris,

It does sound like a driver issue. I would recommend unstalling your drivers and using a driver sweeper software. I’m not sure whats the best or safest, maybe someone else can chime in here.

Next, install the latest stable drivers.

Then, make sure DirectX is up to date: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

Also, you can perform an integrity check of your windows file system. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ht/sfc-scannow.htm

Thanks for the response Xystus.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers quite a few times with different driver sweepers and nothing as yet has worked but i have not yet tried the windows file system integrity check you recommended will have a go at it and see what it says when i get back home.

I am also having the same problem listed by the OP with this brand new computer. The screen would go black or I would see blocks of teal and the whole computer will go into some sort of coma if I don’t close GW2 Immediately.

It is driver related as far as I can tell, because when I closed GW2 quickly after seeing the warning signs, it had said “KERNEL driver has stopped working but has recovered”. Any tips?

This is so far the only game it does it to.

Nova,

What card do you have and what is the driver version?

Yeah, It almost crashed again and I had to close it. Still no good with guildwars 2 for some reason.

Really annoying that an upgrade that plays the more detailed graphics better, is somehow more self-destructive.

Have you done a clean install with the driver and using a driver sweeper software? Have you also run the file integrity check I posted for the OP.

The screen goes black/white/red/sometimes teal

This line is worrying, can you monitor the video card temperature once in a while? When color changes appear it could be a video card problem ram/chip.

Also if your card comes factory overclocked, can you downclock it to reference speeds?

A list of reference speeds can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units

Yeah, I would love to. I have never heard of that stuff much less done them unfortunately :/

The file integrity check I will do right now however.

Yeah, still no progress. I am running the driver version it was shipped with and the same blocks come up on the screen before crash. When I did a hard restart, the screen even appeared to have tears in it with some white lines over the blank screen.

Tried uninstalling the graphics driver and still no change with the reinstall. The file integrity was apparently good.

Should I submit this to the Nvidia website? Either that or the card is faulty or overheating I figure. Windows Kernal just keeps crashing which I suppose is to stop whatever it is from shutting my computer off. However, it is not succeeding at that :/

As far as a driver sweeper, I am not sure where to check for a reliable one. Any additional advice would be awesome!

“When I did a hard restart, the screen even appeared to have tears in it with some white lines over the blank screen.”

Definitely a graphics card failure. At that point the drivers aren’t even loaded yet so it’s not a driver issue. You should check to see if it’s overheating. I use Hardware Monitor, which can be found here:

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

If it’s not overheating and the PSU is supplying adequate power, then the card is defective. You can try re-seating it, but I would be surprised if that resolves the issue.
