Some FPS fixes/Rant
I agree. I have seen a lot of people complaining about performance and then listing their specs and having really old / low end hardware.
This is a brand new game, if you’re in the low end you’re not going to get good performance on anything above the “best performance” settings.
I saw a thread where someone bought a GTX 290 (why?) and someone else a 630 and they were wondering why the game wasn’t performing so well!
o/ hey there. I bought the 630, so I guess you are hinting at me. I tell you one thing. I swapped my 630 for a 660 ts. Wanna know something funny? Nothing changed. Ive been now 2 hours with some of the owners of the best pc selling site in orway, komplett.no. Theyre supposed, to be quite good, and have ok knoiwledge about computers. They had a look at both my cards. My pc. They tried 4 different graphic cards, cards which would cost me my car if I were to buy it. Wanna know the funny side? Game crashes. Wanna know something else? My 630 should run the game WITHOUT the crashing issues.
Youre not doing Anet any good by tossing mud at the ones reporting BAD CODING from Anet. Youre just pissing me off, because youre probably NOT having any problem. God knows why, maybe your rig is like my old rig, from 2007. THAT one works like a charm. Instead of behaving like a brat, either shut it, or find a solution.
Its not about “not performing”. Its about game crashing every 20 seconds. Be it on lowest setting.

Yea, crashing is a software or driver issue. If it was a fault with the game, it would be an application error that everyone has, or is at least mentioned in the support knowledge base. If the error isn’t there, that means it’s pretty rare and caused by something outside of Anet’s control.
This is just how software works – especially with games. Restarts, shut downs and blue screens are very, very, very rarely caused by an error with the game itself. I don’t say this as a fan of GW2, I say it has someone who has spent a career fixing people’s PCs and being an enthusiast gamer.
I wasn’t hinting at you to be honest – because the guy I had in mind was complaining that they had to play on low settings to get decent performance, so I’d appreciate a bit less of the attitude, ok?
And why would anyone ever code a engine that has really nice graphics but doesn’t utilize the graphics card much?Who had this genius idea over at Arena.net?
It’s like he said “Hey,so,people these days have really powerful graphics cards but eff it,let’s make the engine use the CPU more than the graphics card”.DUH.
It pegs my 670 at about 70% – so that’s pretty heavy usage.
MMOs are CPU dependent. All of them are – if you have poor CPU its gonna drag you down – you know why?
Most people with a PC have a decent CPU and a rubbish GPU – so they need to cater for that to allow more people to play the game.
Now for my Rant, I’m honestly tired of people complaining about there computer’s low FPS when they are on low-end trash “Pre-builts” PCs or "Gaming laptop,’’ Thinking they can max the game (They are trying to make the game playable, not so everyone can max it, duh). The game has fine optimization.
I say-a aaaAAAAAAAaaameeeen! Preach it, brothah!
heh
Be in mind this is NOT a GPU intensive game, It’s CPU Intensive/bound.
It is both; it has occasionally pegs a CPU or two but it does peg the GPU more so, especially with them there reflections set to all. Which one any one PC will run into most will depend on the PC.
2. Download Driver Fusion
What an ugly, UGLY piece of software. I can’t recommend it since its chances of breaking something are greater than doing any good. nVidia and ATI (I assume AMD kept up) have excellent driver (un)installation software. All other drivers should be bookmarked and checked about every 6 mos. when you do your thorough cleaning of the computer’s case and peripherals. Some motherboard/PC manufacturers already have a program to check for new drivers.
5. If you considering and PC Upgrade Avoid it for a while. Many people are telling people they should upgrade. They should have a “Patch” hopefully soon for you all.
Blanket generalities aren’t good advice. (_get it? that was one there..ehhh? eHHH?)
Whether to upgrade or not depends on the PC in question. The conversations here that don’t just assume Anet’s code sucks are productive; there are plenty here who would help to answer a user’s specific question on upgrading. As a rule of thumb, I recommend reformatting/reinstalling Windows to eliminate software issues and bloat to see if the hardware is really inadequate first.

Whenever I read those low FPS complaints, it’s so hard to not suspect user error because they always sound so clueless about computer hardware. Most of them don’t even know how to post the specs of their computer…
…ye, I mean, how dare they even PLAY this game…duh
This isn’t just a problem with people with ancient PCs wondering why they can’t hit 60FPS with all settings at max, plenty of people with high end systems are having performance issues including myself. Before it got merged with who knows what topic, the Low FPS thread had plenty of people with 680 systems and good CPU overclocks having performance issues. The nvidia feedback page on the latest beta drivers had tons of people with the same problem.
http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/nvidia-geforce-306-02-beta-drivers-released/
Also, the newest “official” drivers are exactly the same thing.
They tried 4 different graphic cards, cards which would cost me my car if I were to buy it. Wanna know the funny side? Game crashes.
Were all four cards 600-series? Either all four cards/drivers are the issue or something with the rest of the computer is the issue.
My 630 should run the game WITHOUT the crashing issues.
But it doesn’t, so on to figure out why by isolating the problem. I’ll be honest: cheap parts do have these problems and why I won’t touch them.
Youre not doing Anet any good by tossing mud at the ones reporting BAD CODING from Anet.
I haven’t seen any reports of bad coding from Anet, only scapegoating.

And personal attacks aren’t getting anyone any closer to finding a solution.
Many of us (I included) will be happy to help you but being more eager to state the facts and willing to troubleshoot will find the solution better than rampaging in the forums.

Unfortunately I’m hovering in the 30-50FPS range with settings maxed out, supersampling on.
Hopefully Nvidia will release a SLI profile soon, as right now the game is essentially treating both GPUs as one (ie. 50%/50% GPU usage, 40/60% etc)
As far as CPU goes…I’m running an AMD 1100T @ 3954mhz. I noticed the game seems to very well multithreaded —- almost always using 4 of my CPU cores at 70-90%.
TLDR: Unfortunately Nvidia FINALLY resleased a new WHQL driver just today, and it included not GW2 updates. Both Nvidia and AMD are likely working on it though, just like they’re working on Dark Souls.
Here’s to hoping!
I have new hardware on my custom built pc and have all the updated drivers and still get low fps seemingly at random.
Have we had any word from Anet about this? It seems that different people are blaming different things. So far it’s been Nvidia’s fault, Anet’s fault, Incompatible hardware fault, drivers fault, cpu’s fault etc. etc.
Has it actually been pinpointed why this is happenening?
@ OP I wish I can upvote you lol.
I think people should stop the blaming game it won’t help solve anything. I wish people would see the big picture here, Anet like only have 300 people? servicing like probably a million+ users? and afaik we haven’t had a major downtime since launch.

Err, Sli has been supported since launch & is working perfectly. I confirmed this weeks ago. Even TRi SLi is working 100%.

If your Gpu’s are not being utilized, then your cpu is slowing you down. That simple mate.

If your Gpu’s are not being utilized, then your cpu is slowing you down. That simple mate.
Unfortunatley no, it is not that simple.
I have a 3.6GHz i7 CPU and its not remotely close to being maxxed out either in computation or data transfer speed.
The issue is clearly the game and possibly also the drivers.
During the first week, the FPS was very high, though it didn’t use both GPUs very well.
Now the FPS is down, so something has changed in the game code, and GPU usage is lower than it was, and CPU usage is about the same.

Yes, it is….
Try monitoring your cpu/gpu usage while playing. In WvW or big cities (especially Lions Arch) your cpu usage will max out & your GPU usage will drop. In open areas with not much going on, your GPU will max wile your cpu usage will drop.
One will ALWAYS be slowing the other one down. There is no perfect combination of cpu/gpu where both get used 100%. Because of the vastly different situations in gaming, one will always utilized more than the other.

You don’t understand… I would play the game on low and on 1024×768 if it made any difference, but it doesn’t. No matter what I configure my settings to my fps always goes from 5 to 80 depending on the situation. Now, I have a weak pc but it shouldn’t lag like that on LOWEST POSSIBLE SETTINGS. It’s frustrating me, I was looking forward to 3W.

Why would you disable your hardware acceleration?

My hero.
What does this have to do with fps in the game?
GPUs have several power profiles, eg 150MHz, 400MHz, and 800MHz. 150 for desktop idling, 400 for video acceleration/cuda/gpgpu, and 800 for gaming.
Some AMD HD6000 devices lock it to 400 if flash (or media players with DXVA) are running, even in the background. Haven’t seen this happen on nVidia or HD7000 yet.
Unfortunatley no, it is not that simple.

Every CPU core isn’t maxed because of how threads work. Look at GW2.exe in something like ProcessExplorer and notice that one does 10-100x more than any other. While most programs can be split into many threads, a single thread can’t be running on more than one core at a time (aka concurrency). Any improvement is gonna have to come from ANet and ANet only.
