GW2 crashes sporadically.

Crash symptoms:

  • GW2 UI freezes
  • sometimes sound keeps stuttering
  • sometimes I can alt+ctrl+del to the task manager and kill the process however the system fails to shutdown afterwards (i.e. I can stop the task but the process gw2.exe can’t be killed)
    - the tray icon indicating if the Nvida GPU or the internal GPU is used doesn’t react to anything
  • sometimes I can alt+ctrl+del desktop and GW2 send report dialog showes up and the process ended normaly after sending the report
  • if I can’t use the task manager I need to use the reset-button (i.e. holding down the power button)

I had those issues in the beta weekends but they seemed to be fixed a while ago. I played a week from head-start without those issues. Two weeks ago the game started to crash constantly again. Then no crashes for one week and and now crashes are back. I’ve reported via in-game tool and web site but customer support doesn’t respond.

Since I’ve seen it running long time without crashes (e.g. a week), I don’t think this is a hardware or driver issue but due to some performance optimization attempts.

From what I have gathered the crash issues are largely impacted by your graphics settings. Finding the right combination of these settings will often fix the issue. Here is a copy and paste from another post that worked for me….

I seem to have fixed my crashing issue. I would crash every few minutes as well and the game was unplayable. I did two things and played for 4 hours last night with no crashes.

1) Go to Nvdia control panel, hit the button that says “restore”, this will prompt you to set the control panel settings to default, click yes.

2) Launch GW2 and change graphics settings to the preset “Best Performance”. Now I know you, I, and a lot of others have systems that should be able to handle this at medium or high settings, but if you want to play at least try this. It doesn’t look very pretty but it works for now.

Enjoy the game, your milage may vary with this, but I was having unplayable crashes constantly. If it works for you, you can try adjusting individual graphic settings higher and see if it remains stable, if not just revert it back, I haven’t messed with any of the options for now and instead will play like this until Anet resolves the underlying issue, I am just happy to at least be able to play and level up for now.

Hope this helps someone who was having issues, It was beyond frusterating for me so I had to share the two steps that helped me, at least until a permanent fix is patched in.

I’m actually having the same exact issue as TheBluel. Sometimes, randomly the game will either lock up my desktop with the sound looping or crash to desktop with GW2 graphic driver error msg of some sort. If it freezes up I usually have to manually reset the desktop and if I’m able to end process via task manager then the system will hang when I try to restart it or shut it down. This is so incredibly random too. I can play for many hours per day for a week with no crashes and sometimes it crashes within an hour of starting the game. This has happened with 3 different clean installs of nvidia drivers including their latest beta release. What are the specs of your machine?

I already tried the “Best Performance” option still crashing. So I did not “restore” the driver settings. The point is: the fact that it did worked well a few days ago, in my opinion indicates that the issue is caused by changes to GW2 and is not a driver hardware problem since my driver and hardware are still the same.

I’m actually having the same exact issue as TheBluel.

It doesn’t crash to desktop and I don’t get an error message. The rest sound similar.

Same here… worked perfectly until I trying switching the game to windowed mode and that’s what triggered the crashes.. Tried the solution presented by Zerolimits but didn’t help.. And I did every update required to play before I even started since during the download I got messages telling me what I need to update and to what version so… and there are so many people with this same issue.. Sighs

The crash to desktop with the error only happened once. Usually its always either full lockup or me having to use task manager. Also if I check the event manager around the time the crash happened there’s sometimes a msg there about the nvidia driver crashing and recovering or something along those lines. I’m not home right now so I cant get the exact error msg but I’m curious if you have something similar to that.

I didn’t find anything in the event log after the crashes yesterday. However, after I ctr+alt-del to the desktop at second crash yesterday GW2 send report dialog showed up and the process ended normaly after sending the report (new symptom?).

I had the same issues, sometimes I would crash a lot, +10 times a night. Tried absolutely everything I can think of, ensured machine is clean, everything is updated etc. As the error report always pointed out somethingn with a corrupted archive, I also moved my game to different drives, excluded the game folder from virus scanning and was getting more and more annoyed as nothing seemed to help.

When I looked at another error error I spotted that there were a lot of pagefault errors so I thought as I tried everything software wise that I might just swap my ram, not the most expensive thing to do and I gave it a try. Replaced my 4x 2gig 1600 ram with 2×4 of the same spec and have not crashed since.

While the weird thing is that I did not have any issues with other games (racing competitively in Iracing and at least the game never crashed with the old ram) I believe that Guildwars 2 is pretty sensitive when it comes to pagefaults which causes the crashes while maybe other titles are a bit more forgiving.

I believe that it might be worth to check memory if you have issues and thought I mention my finding.

When I get CTD’s and the Error Report pops up, it tells me I’m out of memory. I’m not sure what a pegafault is but as in other games, it seems that the problem lies in the game it’s self via a memory leak. I have 8 gigs of ram in the 2x 4gig format. I’ve tried lowering the graphics to WoW standards and I still get crashes. The sound will stutter and the game will freeze at times. Sometimes I get CTD’s with no error log whatsoever.

All of the people that are thinking that ANet isn’t working on this or trying to fix it are just wrong. Why would a company spend years and years making a beautiful game and then not support it? ANet wouldn’t last a day if that was their business model. Please be patient and have a little faith that ANet is working very hard to maintain the customer base it’s already built.

You guys sure about having updated drivers for audio and such? Do not trust windows entirely. Windows told me there was no new drivers available but by using another program I came across better and newer drivers by far today. It´s too early to say if it´s going to effect that much, pretty sure it will though. Give it a shot if you aren’t completely certain.

Both me and my friend are suffering from the same issue as the Op. Sometimes it crashes after 2 minutes playing other times could take as long as one hour. I’m using a 560gtx with 8 gigs of ram, quad core cpu and hes using a 450 gts, 4 gigs of ram and an i3 cpu, basically two completely different machines. If I try to wvw it takes around 5 minutes to crash specially if there’s lots of people. One of the errors:

The game client requires the latest DirectX 9 components; this is true even if you have DirectX 10 or higher already installed. Please follow the instructions at Microsoft’s web site to install the newest DirectX 9 update:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d

Please be sure to save the file to your Windows desktop. Then create a new folder on the desktop and extract the DirectX files into it. Once they have been extracted open the new folder and use the DXsetup file to install DirectX.

If this does not resolve the issue, could those of you experiencing the crash attach crash logs (ArenaNet.log file) and Game Advisor reports to the thread?

I installed it but it still crashes here…
The most annoying thing is that I need to restart my computer every time it crashed because I can’t close “GW2.exe” it in the task manager…

And I don’t get a crash report because it doesnt crash…it freezes and the sound runs but it doesn’t give me an error report…

The DirextX installer says a new or equivalent version is already installed and thus doesn’t let me install something. I’m not sure that I used the correct file (I search for DirectX9 and choose the DirectX9 update download) can you provide a direct link?

But I looked into th “ArenaNet.log” file and found something(File attached):

As far as I remember all timestamps match the crash times. nvd3dum.dll seems to be a NVidia driver file and d3d9.dll looks like it is DirectX9 related.

I suggest everyone having this issue search your ArenaNet.log file for the text “Memory at address 00000000” and check if the timestamps match your crashes.

So now that we know that , what shall we do?

ye I guess that error was directx related although I have it installed, but that is one of the many errors I was having. I kind of sort it out on my end my friend is still having problems even after I changed his machine as I have mine. Now I get something like one crash every three or four hours or better saying one crash a day.
What I did was, uninstalled the nvidia drivers and used ccleaner to clean the registry, installed the new drivers, changed the to best performance in the nvidia panel, I think that sort it for me. Further more I clicked on the gw2 icon and made it execute as an administrator, to run it in windows xp service pack 2 and to deactivate desktop environment composition. This is working for me, my friend’s is still having lots of issues using the same thing.

So TheBluel, I was having the same trouble you were having, Everything you listed that was happening was happening to me. Thought it was only Gw2. I went and played another game, and it happened there too. So started trouble shooting mode. Found out my Ram timings were completely off. I set them correctly and so far so good for me, Still a little to early to tell if it cured me completely. but give it a try. See if if they’re off.
