Thanks Kilam.4913! One quick hosts file edit and I’m back in business suddenly downloading at my normal ~5MB/s

Now why did ArenaNet support drag their feet investigating this for a week, finally tell me they can’t help and send me to this thread when they clearly knew about these workarounds the whole time? Annoying!

try this-it worked for m!

Edit C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts using notepad (run as administrator)
Add this line at the bottom:
174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com

No one is listening to me. I am trying that fix but I cannot open C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts in notepad and run it as administrator. I am getting no prompt to run it as administrator. Anyone have any ideas how to do this?

You have to go to the properties and edit the permissions for yourself (must be logged in as an administrator). Give yourself full permission.

Then use open with (no need to change the file type) and choose notepad. You will be able to edit the file, save it and bam!

Worked for me, but I of course take no responsibility for your setup or changes.

I’m also on Verizon in the NYC area and am experiencing this issue.

Instead of setting up a VPN, try this workaround:

Edit C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts using notepad (run as administrator)

Add this line at the bottom:
174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com

Save the file. If Notepad prompts you to save as a new file, you need to start over and run Notepad as administrator.

If you have the GW2 launcher already open, restart it. If this still doesn’t help, you may need to change the address above and try a different number (e.g. assetcdn.102.etc..).

You may want to remove this line later when (if?) they resolve the networking issue.

Good luck!

Just chiming in to say that this fixed the problem for me as well (on Verizon in NYC). Thanks!

Our Server Programmer expert shared this possible work-around:

We’ve investigated this and it appears to be a real issue with DNS lookup for some Verizon customers. While editing your host file will work in the short term, it is very risky, as any of those addresses you just hardwired into your OS could change at any time. Even worse, if you’re like me, you’ll forget about editing the hosts file and be really confused in the future when patching stops working.

A better workaround would be to set your DNS provider to Google (https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using) as that fixes this problem and will continue working into the future.

Note: If you have tried this work-around and it has not worked for you, please update this thread to let us know.
