First let me preface this by saying that I have been a pc gamer for 2+ decades now, I am also a PC tech, the suggestions I am going to give are those that have worked for me and many others over the years.

1. Run checkdisk’s regularly(at least once a month) and after any time the system powers off/crashes, the best way to do this is as follows.
start>run>cmd or start>search>cmd(type it in and hit enter)
in the window type “chkdsk /f” without the " marks, hit enter, the y then enter again.
restart the system and let that run, it will find and fix any data errors on your drive, you would be shocked how often this happens and how many random issues this can clear up.
eveything from game or app crashes, to stuttering to flash drives and the like not working….

2. run ccleaner regularly(any time you have a game/app crash or unplanned restart) it will clear out any damaged temp files and junk files that can cause errors with games.

3. keep you video and audio drivers up to date and with amd video always install the latest cap’s they are not just for crossfire setups they include fixes for single card users as well.

4. if you still have issues try installing the directx sdk, this will replace directx files on your system with clean ones, once the installs done, run the directx web installer and let it update the clean files to latest versions.

5. defrag your hard drives, there are dozens of good free defrag tools out there that work fine, I use a pay program called perfect disk myself but I recommend
defraggler or mydefrag for free apps, they work well and are cost free.(avoid O&O defrag, its caused problems with alot of systems over the years, their current version may be fine but their old ones…..very hit and miss)

Unfortunately, this is not true. The sdk and redist installers will not replace an existing file.

its always worked for me, and was a tip given by an ms rep on neowin years ago as a fix for corrupted/bugged dx installs.

he did say you could uninstall it afterward and it wont remove the files it replaces.

got any proof he was lining to us?

Yes,

1. The SDK and Redist file conflict handling is set to keep existing (Need an install script viewer for this). This was changed prior to the release of vista due to the Redist/SDK at the time causing the files to be overwritten and breaking directx9 on vista beta.
2. Its Neowin.

well it was an official ms rep back then, back before neowin got the horrible rep they have now(for good reason)

could be they changed the setup scripts tho……guess somebody decided that using the sdk to fix problems was a bad idea…..better to force an sfc/scannow or reinstall windows to fix the same errors…..

on a side note: neowin back in the early windows 2003 days was great, but they quickly turned to kitten as they became more and more full of fanboi mods who let fanboi’s they agreed with do as they pleased, also they started fellating microsoft to the point the forums where nothing but a joke…..
I once had a guy attack me because i was using the legit copy of server 2003 an ms rep gave me as a workstation….ms reps at the time where handing it out like it was pez…….dozens of people posted about how they where doing the same and got it the same way i did….we all got attacked and called pirates……was pretty sad really, and is why I quit being part of neowin’s forums…..
