I’m aware that this is an OS issue, but I’m playing with someone who has a 64-bit OS with the same amount of RAM, yet has no issues with crashing of any kind. Pretty sure my computer could handle it, why am I limited to the Medium setting?

Hi samius – This is an intended feature of the client which is meant to prevent Out of Memory crashes.

But why force us? Couldn’t you have at least given us the option with a warning?

I have another game that does the exact same thing – APB also limits graphics to protect the user from the same error. Except there’s a workaround if you mess with the .ini settings, which I have done and never had a single crash.

I can’t access the settings for Gw2 – I can’t test if I’ll run into that error.

It’s completely irrelevant what your system specs are in this situation – even if you are running a NASA supercomputer, it doesn’t matter one bit when you are still using a 32-bit OS.

The problem here isn’t with your hardware, it’s with the memory restrictions that using a 32-bit OS puts on your system. Firstly a 32-bit OS limits you to just 4gb of physical memory (and this includes VRAM) – if you have any more than this installed, the OS simply doesn’t recognize it. Secondly any single application run on a 32-bit OS is limited to 2gb virtual memory – if the application exceeds this limit, it crashes.

The reason you may not have had any problems in many other games is because a lot of PC games these days are console ports and while a PC with 32-bit OS has severe memory restrictions, the memory limitations on the current set of extremely aged consoles are even worse (because they have practically no memory at all). As a result a lot of console games use tricks to reduce the memory requirements to the point where the 32-bit restrictions become irrelevant because the games have been purposely designed to never even get CLOSE to the 2gb limit. The downside with those games however is that it often limits what these games can do, both graphically and in terms of level design.

Games like Guild Wars 2 – which have been exclusively designed for the PC platform and are built from the ground up to take full advantage of what modern PC hardware can do – simply don’t have these kinds of restrictions. What they do tend to have is larger levels, higher resolution textures and just more variety in textures and objects in general.

Now for a long time even PC developers still tried to support 32-bit OS’s to the best of their ability by trying to keep games working well enough within a 2gb memory limitation, however I would say that most of that was probably due to the fact that Vista turned out so poorly and many PC gamers still stuck with Windows XP for a long time (and since Windows XP 64-bit was rather iffy, most of those users were running the 32-bit version of XP). However as the adoption rates of Windows 7 and 64-bit along with it have risen over the past 2 years, more PC developers are slowly starting to push the boundaries of what is possible with a larger amount of memory at their disposal.

This does present a problem for players still running a 32-bit OS, however if you aren’t running an older or lower end system (in which case the high end graphics option won’t be your primary concern anyway), then you simply shouldn’t be running a 32-bit OS anymore. YES, there was a time when 64-bit was still terrible when it came to support for drivers and such, but that time has long since come and gone – 64-bit has been completely viable for gaming since the introduction of Vista and there is no reason to run a 32-bit version of either Vista, 7 or 8 on a gaming PC these days.

There are a lot of myths circulating around 32-bit, 64-bit and gaming in general, but one of the most persistent is “you don’t need a 64-bit OS if you have 4gb or less of system memory” – WRONG – as I pointed out early 32-bit limits you to 4gb physical memory and 2gb virtual memory per application, but the 4gb physical limit includes things like VRAM on your graphics card – if you have a 1-2gb graphics card and 3-4gb of system memor you ARE missing out on precious useable memory (not to mention addressable virtual memory) by running a 32-bit OS.

What I hope you will take away from reading this is that having a 64-bit OS isn’t just window-dressing, but a real serious investment in your system that matters as much as having a fast and powerful CPU, a high end graphics card and lots of RAM… An OS isn’t just window-dressing, it doesn’t just determine whether your game installs get dumped into the Program Files folder or the Program Files (x86) folder, it actually has a huge impact on how games and other applications are able to use the resources on your system. Simply put, a 64-bit OS is something that’s really worth investing in and the devs are not merely trying to be mean to you by restricting you from using certain graphics options – there is a very solid technical reason why some of those options cannot be used on a 32-bit system.

What the hell r u doing? After LIMITATION you delete my post. What your supposed to? Dont try to explain somthing. As i said before (deleted post fo mine) i played a lot games and i never saw like situation before. I am 37 years old and i m good at computers thing. This is LIMITATION dont try to explain bla bla.Is SWOTR console port? NO. Then Why am i choose HIGH in that game? SWOTR graphic far better then this game. Then why the hell i m able to choose HIGH? No SUB. but LIMITATION about choose texture quality. So stop explain somthin and tell us true, why did yo LIMIT us?What r u planing or thinking? As i said if my computer spec. bad i choose MID. you cant limit me to choose MID. I try HIGH and see if my computer handle that if not i will go back MID.Nobody LIMIT PLAYERS,especialy if we r paid and buy somthin.

U mad ?

I disagree btw GuildWars 2 Looks way beter then SWTOR
I think the reasoning behind the limitation is that now they only have to listen to YOU rage instead off the computer noobs ramming it on high only to have it crash to BLUE SCREEN non stop .. and then blame it on Anet/Gw2.

My rage is i dont understand this situation and all explain is not satisfy me. And i give SWOTR 1 explain(In mid. selection in this game SWOTR look far better then this.Thats why i complain understand? And did you saw Vindictus, its same graphic and in that game i can choose highest also ultra.), out there tons of game will wait to given for example. Is this game graphic mega super? I dont thing so. Some players have super config in their comp. but their OS 32 and they r too can not select high. Is this right too? I dont thing soo. Anyway arenat make good game but that Limitation is injustice about players. They must think and put high selection with warning at least.

SWTOR does not look better than this game. This game is stunning. What concerns me is that I’ve played another game which limited me for the same reason – 32bit OS vs 64bit – I did the work around and it ran fine, plus that game was more demanding compared to Guild Wars 2. What I want is the removal of this limitation so I can at least see if it’ll work or not.

Is the jump from medium to high (textures) THAT huge?

What the…Vindictus is running on the SOURCE engine, you know ,left 4 dead ?…completely different engine, and basically every low end pc can run that game maxxed out, please stop comparing games like these with gw2.Gw2 has a completely different engine and imo looks a hell of a lot better then the games you just mentioned.

And why r u people dont accept its limitation? Dont make me give a list tons of games here to use high, highest or ultra and graph engine. All i need to make that option aviable, then we try if not work we can switch mid. in our choice do you understand?

And why r u people dont accept its limitation?

Because it´s useless to argue about it.

This client is simply too unfinished for primetime, just look at all the performance problem threads.
Allowing only med resolution textures for WinXP, while at the same time it is only capable of using DirectX9 technology is just another crazyness ANet likes to throw at us.

The only way for us is to vote with our wallets, which personally I have done. As my plans to buy anything more from ANet are firmly dead for the foreseeable future.

If you want high-res textures you need Win7/VISTA. And that´s that.

High on one game, is not high on another. I’ll code you up a game with ULTRA HARDCORE EXTREME texture res options, where each texture is 8192*8192 in pure, beautiful uncompressed BMP. 192mb a piece. You can have about 10 of them loaded in a 32 bit OS. And guildwars 2 can’t do that. Therefore, I am better than arena net, and you computer can handle ULTRA HARDCORE EXTREME graphics, so it should do fine with High on guildwars 2. My game will prove it.

My game will have 2 cubes. Each side will have a texture. Actually, I can’t manage 2 cubes like that, you can have one cube, and 4 sides of of another one. They will be beautiful.
