My SSD just crapped out on me so I’m using a Windows install from 2012 with GW2 already installed, obviously updating it it’s gonna be quite the download but it’s saturating the kitten out of my internet connection to the point of me not being able to do anything else. I’m in the process of renewing the house with cat6 and a switch and router where I could control this on the network level but as it stands right now, why isn’t this an option in the launcher?

Just wanted to add multiple complaints of the servers not being fast enough is posted whenever any update comes out…. (I’m easily amused by such things).

Expecting the launcher to limit the download speed is just ludicrous…..sorry to be so blunt. Use your router to limit bandwidth to the specific system if it’s such a problem for you.

Please tell me how the in the hell technically it’s an unreasonable request to have bandwidth-limiting, even if the GW2 launcher is P2P-based. What kittening planet do you live on?

Urf. Welcome to it. Now where’s my cigar…

But yes, Grimm has a very good point. I cannot think of a single launcher / patcher that has limited bandwidth. It’s just the kind of thing no one ever asks for. “Excuse me, sirs, but I would like to download your game slower, is that possible please? I’d like to have to leave my computer on all night. I’d like to make a feature-film trilogy of my progress bar going up, is that possible please? IT’S GOING TOO FAST!”

This post may contain a high concentration of sarcasm and irony.

Other than Steam and Bittorrent, I can’t think of one updater than had a bandwidth limiter.

I live on Earth (but the native inhabitants often seem a bit “dim”)…..

The technical reason for not having this? ….hmmm….let me see….how about NOBODY (ok, very FEW) want SLOWER downloads? I’m just guessing here.

The GW2 launcher / download utility is NOT a P2P file sharing program (and the fact that you think it would be LIKE one speaks volumes about why we are having this conversation).

Seriously, if you want to limit the download speed, your only option is possibly a setting in your router. Some do allow for bandwidth limiting based on IP addresses across your internal LAN. These can often be set up as profiles that can be applied based on date / time or demand (and they CAN get quite complex to set up….be warned).

The assumption of starting the game is that you want to play it now. The fact a patch must be applied to allow you to do that translates into getting the patch downloaded and applied as fast as possible, to get you playing as soon as possible.

If you need more bandwidth while the game is downloading there is a simple fix just close out of the installer till you are finished with the internet the start the game again the game will pickup the downloading where it left off. The download percent will say 0 but the file count will be less so there you go problem solved

The argueing in this thread is so blergh… i’m also affected by this issue down to the point i can’t even log in to the game. Because once you are logged into the game it downloads slower so you can atleast play the game. There is an option for that.

And other games not having that feature? StarCitizen? Basically any Blizzard game? Tera Online? various other MMO Launchers? They all have it and i’m thankful whenever a developer implemented it.

And those of you saying “why do you even need this”: It is not making YOUR downloadspeed slower – it is making OUR downloadspeed slower so we can actually do something else on our crap net for example browse facebook, check mails, download the latest code base because you want to do something else while waiting an hour for freaking GW to update.

Bumping because this is still an issue.
