Q:
After submitting a support ticket and running pingplot, it has been determined that my Error 7 is caused by dropped packets. I still don’t know where or why so the problem isn’t resolved, but at least I know it’s my problem.
Now I’ve looked up threads on Error 7 in the forum and have seen posts about DNS, Portforwarding, Pingplot, Firewall settings…..I’ve switched from wifi to direct cable connection to router, then to direct cable connection to modem.
I shouldn’t have to do or know about all this just to play GW2.
If you’re having packet loss due to the ISP connection, and/or wifi issues, than its outside of the game’s control.

Just know that I’ve had to buy a new computer, with a new operating system and switch to a new ISP for faster speeds to play GW2. I never had the frequency of disconnections in GW1.
It’s difficult to communicate with my ISP support, but before I call them I’m going to try to lower firewall settings and check the ports.
Given the large number of Error 7 issues AND the fact that this isn’t the first MMO Anet has released…
Why does it have to be on my end to make the game playable?

You might try to dmz your computer when you play, see if that makes any difference, then you’ll know for sure if its a port problem. I dmz mine every time I play anyway, yeah I know the risks….
Theres also a program I use/installed called Leatrix Latency, has worked great for gw2 and FF xiv.
Welcome to the world of computer gaming/mmo’s, if you want to be involved in these types of games on the computer, yes your going to have to be your own tech support most of the time, just the way it is. Try to look at it as a learning experience when issues pop up…

You say that you’ve swapped ISPs to get faster speeds. I wonder – do you get your internet over a phone line? If so, then, for the last few yards anyway, you’re simply trying to push more down the same old line you’ve always used – and, especially if you’re a long way from the cabinet, one possibility is that your line quality simply isn’t good enough for the speed that your ISP is trying to push over it. Yes, they’ll have done work up front to try to check that, but from personal experience I know that it’s a bit hit and miss. Talk to their support people – there are things they can do to try to check that out, and tweaks they can make to the signal you receive, as well. But if that’s the problem, and they can’t tune your lost packets away, you may need to settle for a lower speed if you want reliability and quality. Annoying, but there you go.
(I had quite a similar problem when I switched to my current ISP. Their initial tests suggested I could get quite a high speed, but I got all sorts of loss problems when they actually tried to deliver. In the end we agreed to their swapping me to a somewhat slower, cheaper package – still faster than I’d been getting, but not what I’d hoped for – and suddenly everything was fine again.)

No, I went from DSL to cable because when I was trying to download GW2 Beta client for BWE#1, my download speed was so slow the event was going to end before I got the client downloaded. I think I went from 200Kbs to 2.1Mbs after switching.
If I read the results from Pingplot correctly, 40% of the packets were dropped. I don’t know if that’s the worst case or if that’s the average or even if it’s a constant 40%. It may be that during normal PvE that 40% isn’t enough to be an issue but when I go to WvW that 40% crosses that threshold that hangs up the game.
I was able to do several personal story missions without problem and even crossed several maps to get to those missions. I think I even got to join in on the latter part of the Shatterer event. But on Friday when I did manage to get into WvW I could barely make it to a supply camp before getting disconnected, even when nobody was around.

Best to contact ur ISP ..packet loss can be checked by them and they will let u know what the problem is and hopefully how to fix it.

Sorry…. but are you serious?
If you buy a Car, do you ask its manufacturer to build a road between your garage and your workplace?
So think that:
car = gw2
garage = your computer
workplace = gw2 server
and
road = internet connection?

I shouldn’t have to do or know about all this just to play GW2.
If you want to play computer games, you need basic computer knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
if you want to play online games, you need basic network knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
These situations can be annoying, but try to look at it as a learning experience.

What you need to know in order to play computer games/online games is if your hardware meets the requirements to run the product, and thats where your obligations as user end, whoever sells you the product must provide it as foolproof as possible, thats why theres customer services. It’d be the same as saying that in order to enjoy a summer cruise you must know how to repair the ship’s engines.
I do agree that someone with zero knowledge over this stuff is rather weird tho, specially these days…. but still

Yes and no Toejam.
You wouldnt drive a car without bassic knowledge of how to change a tire ..or a fan belt ..or what to do if it starts smoking when driving along a motorway or some such. Infact in some countries ..its a requirment for passing ur driving test.
Online gaming and computers may not have legal requirments ..but some general knowledge is most deffiantly handy and in some casses expected.
Every1 has to start somewhere, but …nowerdays atleast.. its so easy to just google stuff, read and learn. When i first started gaming ,on a PC atleast, i had to learn the hard way. Me dad sat me on his lap and went “here u go ..lvl 1 of Command & Conquer ..go play.” My first gaming consol was a Atari 2600Jr ..those games were incredibly hard by todays standards ..they were my first games .i got no help..just started playing lol.
So saying the product provider must provide a foolproof as possible product is rediculus ..that kinda thinking is why we have the EZmode games of today already -.-

The flipside of that is that Anet’s obligation starts once you connect to their service. It’s not their responsibility(or even within their power) to fix you and your ISP’s networking infrastructure so that your signal can make it there.
or, following your nonsensical cruise analogy, you have to make it to the boat yourself, the ship won’t pick you up at your house in Nebraska.

If you are a company and you wish to sell lots of cars, GW2, wouldn’t you want to make sure it would work on all the different roads (internet connections) before you put the product on sale???
Expecting the customer, me, to make sure that the road fits the car isn’t the way to stay in business, especially when the previous model car, GW1, worked just fine.
In fact, GW2 for the most part has worked fine, it’s just recently that I’ve been getting Error 7 disconnects. It’s also just recently that I’ve moved from mostly PvE to mostly WvW.

So? Of course Anet isn’t responsible for your network infrastructure , thats your ISP’s responsability, you still aren’t required to possess any sort of deep tech knowledge on the matter beyond picking up the phone and telling whoever supplies your inet service “it doesnt work, fix” (wich is what the OP should’ve done from starters), therefore no, you dont need any tech knowledge to play games, if it was so games wouldn’t be half as popular.
Sure, its handy, no, its no obligation, wich was the initial point, if it was so, it’d be on the box right by “internet connection required”.
@SolarNova : yes i know, but i was talking about performance and stability and how much knowledge the user is supposed to possess in order to play a game, not how easy or hard it is to down zhaitan, thats what i meant about foolproof. Other than that i agree, games have been dumbed down way too much in the last few years.
The OP’s only fault here is asking why must everything on his end being ok in order to play the game, since its a pretty evident answer.

UPDATE:
Just called ISP as I was playing game. They were pinging Anet’s game IP address I was connected to. They didn’t see anything wrong with the Anet server OR my modem while I crashed twice while talking to them. One crash was when I was on the character select screen. Pingplotter showed 100% packet loss on hop #8 and I could still play game. The game has crashed a third time while I’m typing this, dropping me back into character select screen from LA.
So if Anet’s expert says not a problem on their end and my ISP’s expert says everything’s fine on their end it must not be happening.
I’m not asking why everything must be OK on my end, I’m asking why I can’t get a problem fixed in an area where I’m not an expert. I don’t tell the doctor what’s specifically wrong and what the treatment is, I don’t tell the mechanic which parts need to be replaced on the car when the “check engine” light comes on. I along with all 24,000 plus who’ve viewed threads on Error 7 just want an expert to fix a problem

Computers and Networks are not static things, by a long shot. There is no person who has the same exact setup as another person, and thus, different fixes may be required in different situations.
ANet, and every other developer can only make their thing run on so many computers and networks. No developer can make their thing run on “everything”, but they can try to make it work on as many things as possible. For the computers and/or networks that don’t “just work”, then a more in-depth analysis is needed as to why.
If anything, you now have some experience as to what to do in-case you have this situation occur elsewhere, and more experience is always nice

Is your computer wireless to the router/modem?
If it is wireless, you may be looking at interference and may have to experiment with changing the wireless channel on the router/modem.
If you have a smartphone you can get a wifi analyzer app to scan the channels and find the one with the least amount of interference.
If you have both a modem and a router setup, then you will want to try bypassing your router and connect straight to the modem, see if that makes any difference.
It could also be a problem with your computer, such as the network cable being loose in the port, a faulty NIC, or a software issue.
