Hey Devs…Im looking to upgrade my computer from a i5-3550 Ivy Bridge LGA1155 CPU to possibly a i5 4670k Haswell 1150 CPU (and new mobo). I believe that my current in-game fps is limited by my CPU, not my GPU. Should this upgrade produce a noticeable difference in the games frame rates?
What if I go for an i7 4770k instead, will the hyperthreading help at all? I read the other thread were we can unlock all cores for a 20fps boost. Will an i7 be any better than its i5 counterpart?
If ur already on a Z77 motherboard then just get a 3770k or 3570k. Its not worth the money to buy a new motherboard and CPU when ur already on LGA 1155.
Use what u would spend on a new motherboard to get ether the 3770k, or even the 3770k + a h100 AIO water cooler and OC the balls of it.
What u will gain is the performance is the difference between the adaptive 3.5-3.7ghz 3550 to a constant 4.5ghz+ 3570k or 3770k.
An i7 will only show an advantage over the i5 when the i5 would otherwise be 99% utilised. So how often do u notice ur current 3550 hitting 99-100% overall utilisation ? what ever the answere is, thats how often u wil see an advantage if u got an i7. It can happen in GW2, but it isnt very often. Even so, saving money on the motherboard by not buying a new LGA 1150 one could be spent on an i7 anyway so if u can get one, then get one.

Personally, I believe your performance gains would be minimum between an i5 and i7. I Better choice would be IMO getting a K model i5 and a 3rd party CPU cooler and look into overclocking.

Wait for next gen. of CPU not worth spending money for haswell if you all ready have i5….
http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/09/12/intel-reveal-new-broadwell-cpu-technology-due-out-next-year/
wait for broadwell
" broadwel is 30% more power efficent than haswell at the same performance level "
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7318/intel-demos-14nm-broadwell-up-to-30-lower-power-than-haswell
paragraph under 1st pic.
Meaning broadwell is unlikely to give any significant performance advantage over Haswell and is likely to follwo the trend and be even hotter when OC’d.
Dont wait for braodwell it wont be anythign special.
You could get a Sandybridge(2500k/2550k/2600k/2700k), Ivybridge(3570k/3770k), or Haswell(4670k/3770k) and be good to go even after broadwell comes out as they will all produce the same performance once Overclocked using the same cooler.

but…
haswell-e should be released around the same time and I think I read its not going to be on LGA 2011, but chipset x99.
It may be the mobo to have next year.(or year and a half ish)
If Intel doesnt solder the IHS on Haswell-E those chips are going to run soooo hot that they wont be able to OC much if at all.
I run everything at peak with no hiccups whatsoever in any game type on my i5 3570k ivybridge. I have it OC at 4.2 running on a Z77 mobo

what kind of fps are you seeing in wvw? specifically zerg vs zerg.
I think CPU. clock is the king here, when I upgraded my very old i7 920 overclocked 3G to latest i7 4770k
3.5Ghz, I couldn’t notice the fps improvement, I regretted so much for spending this huge amount of money, but after I overclocked i7 4770k to 4.5g, I got huge fps gain, so if you can’t get more Hz from CPU upgrade, dont buy new CPU

That seems to hold true with alot of what people are saying.
thats pretty awesome you got a haswell to OC to 4.5. Did you use a water setup?
I watched a newegg video where a guy OC’ed like 8 different haswell cpu’s. Only about half of them got to 4.5
Since i7 920 overclock, I used ZALMAN CNPS series, now I’m using ZALMAN CNPS9900MAXR and very satisfied, under SuperPI test of OC 4.5, the temp is just around 76c, my motherboard and memory is the bottleneck preventing me overclock more than 4.5G, I achieved 4.8G which is not stable under long time SuperPI test, but seems ok for my normal run or game play, of coz it crashes with that high freq ; )

I believe it was ASUS that tested 100 4770k’s and learned that only about 70% of Haswell chips will make it to 4.5GHz. Silicon lottery is strong with this.

I think u will find its not the motherboard holding u back.
There have been tests done that show that nowerdays the motherboard u get almost doesnt matter (so long as they are Z series) what OC u get. You could get a Asus m-ITX board and a Asus Maximus Extreme board and they will get the same OC.
The thing that mattera is the CPU itself, the silicon lottery. You will likely find that u may need a very large boost in voltage to get above 4.5ghz at which point ur cooler isnt good enough.
But for Haswel it doesnt matter much, a 4.5ghz Haswell is roughly the same as a 4.9ghz-5.0ghz Sandybridge.
