Is 45 FPS really the best I can do with this setup and everything on?
I’d think I could do better. I mean when I’m looking at the sky I can get 80-90, but usually I’m running somewhere between 40-55.
Is that normal or is there something I can tweak?

What clock on the CPU.
Where in game exactly ? Are all the settings on max every 1 of them ? What resolution ?
Whats ur GPU usuage when ur at 45 fps ?
You should definitely be getting more. I get around 60 FPS with nearly all max settings in 1920×1080, and my specs aren’t as good as yours.

Depending on where he is that FPS could be caused by CPU bottlenecking, specialy if its at stock clocks.
Also if he is running at 1440p or 1600p and has supersampling enabled that could also cause a single gpu card like the 7970 to buckle under the strain.
This be why we need more info

Sorry about that. Yeah its stock. I’m not proficient when it comes to overclocking and that chip cost too much to take my chances. GPU usage fluctuates between 50-99%.
Everything on max, 1920×1080. But honestly, you can’t go too much higher than my setup. 45 is all I should expect?

Yup, u have to overclock to get more FPS, the stock i7 will bottleneck since game uses 1 core only the others just feed from the main thread.
Here, try setting your graphics settings to the following (they’re my current settings):
Resolution: 1920×1080
Refresh Rate: Default
Frame Filter: Unlimited
Interface Size: Normal
Full-Screen Gamma is disabled.
Animation: High
Anti-Aliasing: FXAA
Environment: High
LOD Distance: Medium
Reflections: All
Textures: High
Render Sampling: Native
Shadows: High
Shaders: High
Post-Processing: High
Best Texture Filtering is unchecked.
Depth Blur is checked.
High-Res Character Textures is unchecked.
Vertical Sync is checked.

Terrible settings for performance/visualquality ratio. U can just set up everything to ultra including LOD it does not hit hard on the CPU, the turn reflections and shadows down, u will get easy 20+ FPS without any noticeable visual quality hit.

Thanks guys. I’ll give that a try.

I beg to differ; LOD distance is essentially the distance at which characters render – rendering is typically CPU-intensive.
However, as Rampage said, turning down reflections and shadows may prove to boost your FPS.
Also, I just looked into it – the i5-3570k is 3rd gen and an Ivy Bridge; the i7-3930k is 2nd gen and a Sandy Bridge. So it’s possible that I am getting more performance particularly for GW2 out of my CPU than you are; are you using the stock speed of 3.2GHz or have you overclocked it? I would think it’s only your processor that would be bottlenecking your performance, since your RAM and GPU is better than mine (I have 8GB 1600MHz RAM and a Radeon HD 7770).

My machine is stock. No overclocking.
Disable reflections, the are currently being done on the cpu not the gpu.
45FPS is spot on for your GPU. If you want more then turn some of your settings down. I have a 7950@1200mhz & get similar FPS.

Gonna have to buy 2 then. I don’t run anything at less than max.

GW2 does not like Xfire. So I would not recommend that.

Alright. I just checked a few sites, and long story short, the i5-3570k gets better performance, but that’s about it; when it comes to things like multitasking or hyper threading technology, i7-3930k wins by a long run (i5-3570k doesn’t even have hyper threading). If you’re a bit savvy with overclocking and/or not afraid to tinker with it, you could try overclocking your core a bit to see if you can get better FPS in-game.
Also, I would personally geek out a bit if I managed to get my hands on a Titan GPU.

GW2 does crossfire but a single 7950 can max this game at 80+ FPS, the problem is the CPU. Not because the 3930k is bad by any means, it is to me the best CPU on the market atm, just because the geme runs on 1 core, this means u need to overclock in order to get a single stronger core so the videocards can stretcht thir legs, the guy who said u need a titan to run this game or CF is not working, just don’t know what he is saying, ignore him.
Any card starting from 100$ will is able to max out this game at playable FPS, it is all on ur CPU here.

Right, I understand. I just jumped ship from an AMD Phenom II X6 1090t. I knew that the multicore processor would still be a bit of a problem for most MMOs but I thought the 3930K would be more than enough to push 60 FPS on max on a game like this. Guess I was wrong. Luckily gaming isn’t my only purpose for getting the upgrade.

Well yeah the engine just suck, it is not ur CPU fault at all, don’t worry about it, better coded MMOs will come at some point soon now new consoles are arround the corner games will become more multi CPU dependant which is awesome for the 2011 platform due the quad channel memory and the ability to upgrade to a 8 core Ivy-e U did a wise choice going for the 2011 socket instead the 1155 which is allready a dead socket.

The 3770 beats the 3930 for gaming right now. At least until devs learn how to code for it from what I’ve been reading.
I use it for many other purposes though, mainly video editing and that’s where it shines.
Anyway thanks everyone for the tips and input.

Just a quick update. I tried the following settings and now I’m getting a solid 60 FPS:
Animation – High
AA – FXAA
Environment – High
LOD – High
Reflections – Terrain & Sky
Textures – High
Render Sampling – Native
Shadows – High
Shaders – High
Post Processing – High
Best Texture Filtering – Check
Depth Blur – Check
High-Res Characters – Check
V-Sync – Check
Game still looks the same but plays a lot better.

What absolute nonsense. Don’t listen to this.
An i7 won’t bottleneck anything. I have one, I can easily get 60FPS in Divinity’s Reach.
OP, do you have reflections and / or supersampling on?

Sure, now go to WvW, or a dragon event and tell me the i7 isn’t bottlenecking u, i know cuz i have a 2600k and yeah it can easy bottleneck my hd7950 it even bottleneck my gtx 550ti which i use as a phsyx card, but sure don’t listen to me i don’t know kitten about computers
Again it dosn’t happen cuz i7s are bad processors, it happens due the game main thread capping out on 1 core. Game can’t take advantage of multicore CPUs, and that was cool back in 2005 but in 2012 that is terrible due most ppl CPUs are quads at least, having games still coded for pentium 4 architecture will make em run like crap on modern systems.

Any and all processors bottleneck on this game because of how it’s coded. I’m willing to bet even next generation stuff will still bottleneck just because of how bad it is in some places (chaotic WvW battles, huge DE, etc, etc). I have an i7, albeit a first generation i7, but it is the bottleneck of the system.

@OP
Set all ur ingame settings to max, including SS if u have it on already, then simply turn reflections to terrain and sky, that should give a noticable increase when ur GPU is able to stretch its legs. As u said ur GPU hit 99% occasionaly it likely just means that its hitting a wall with SS on along with max setting on everything else.
GW2 may not look like the best game in the world visualy, but there is ALOT of stuff to render, more so than smaller games such as FPS titles.
As for ur CPU. Stock it indeed is not the best gaming CPU, the ivybridge 3570k and 3770k will do better ..but. The 3930k is a K series ..its also known to be VERY good at OC’ing. Without poping of the IHS on ivy cpu’s u’ll be lucky to get 4.4 or 4.5ghz on a air cooler.
My first ‘proper’ OC was with my current rig. Thats right.. i went in with little experiance(b4 hand it was minor multiplier or base clock tweeks) with OC and tried it out on a £500 CPU lol. But i made sure i done my research, and nothing went wrong. I now sit at 4.6ghz 24/7 stable on air cooling at a modest voltage of 1.36v using a offset OC ..meaning the voltage can drop really low when its not in use..like 0.8v. My temps barely break 75c, and usualy hover ,at max 100% load, around 72c. Which actually means i could possibly get 4.7ghz b4 having to swtich to water cooling so long as the voltage jump doesnt requir anything above 1.38v..i havnt bothered trying though tbh.
My advice to u is to get some good cooling and OC that CPU, its a wolf in sheeps clothing when its sitting at stock. U want that wolf out all the time ..trust me
Anyway a OC will help allow ur GPU to stay fully utilized. However for SuperSampling AND full reflections and max settings. .u will likely need SLI/Xfire.

I don’t agree with many posts on fps and the way this game runs for most people. I run with a 3930k and 2×7970s at 5760×1200. I have pretty much all ultra with reflections/shadows adjusted down. And my FPS is always over 40 even at that resolution. When I go to 1920×1200 i run 100+ frames. Check drivers/programs running. If you have to fully delete old drivers and reinstall to make sure its a clean install do it. I have very few issues.
Only issues I have had is server side lag and culling BS during the largescale dragons and such, but thats on their side. I also have weird bog down feel when I open the guild panel for some odd reason.
Good luck your machine is plenty just watch the shadows/reflections I can’t even hardly tell a difference with them down a bit. And you are on 1920×1080 so you should be maxed.

read this thread and read what anet themselves have said a few dozen times, the game is currently VERY cpu bound, it was designed for 3 cores and makes little use of others.
the 3 main threads are VERY heavy, and if any of them hit a wall even for an instant, they drag the whole game down with them, imagine this happening millions of times over and over to each of the 3 threads as you game…..thats what drags your fps down to the dirt, even if your not noticing it as you game, its happening when your around alot of people like in LA or DE’s or WvWvW…

Disable reflections, set Shaders to low, Post Processing either to low/off. The rest of the settings you can max fine.
Overclock your CPU. To help with temps delid your 3570K and apply CLU (Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra) to the die. That’s what I did to my 3770K. Watch this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXs0I5kuoX4

CPU and GPU, definitely. 6GB RAM should be alright, but if you can spare the cash, it’d never hurt to get a bit more. Windows Vista is notorious for not cooperating with games, so if you can get something like Windows 7, get it.
As said before me, the short answer is you pretty much want to upgrade everything.

Sheer: agree with most of what you said, but vista in its patched state is no worse or better for games then 7 or 8, infact, if your system can run it smooth and fast, its kinda stupid to pay to upgrade to 7.
I have told a number of clients this because their systems ran vista SMOOOOTH, i mean just as smooth as 7 would run, a few even had me install 7 and then where upset it was no faster…….because everybody they saw online was saying it would be….
vista was CRAP when it came out, but once it got a couple sp’s under its belt, its a kitten good OS just like 7.

sucks you have to void your warranty to do this but, I have seen as much as a 43c drop reported (under tech/pelter+water) from deliding, one fellow used the liquid metal pads rather then the liquid metal itself got good results once he stressed the chip and caused the pad to melt under the ihs.

look at that thread to see why people are delidding AND why alot arent buying ivybridge(who wants to void their warr to get acceptable temps?)

To be entirely fair, I’ve never tried running Vista and Windows 7 on a PC with the same specs, so I can’t directly say whether it is actually still better or worse. What I can say is that, when I used Windows Vista about – I want to say a year ago? – it had a few compatibility issues with some games, and after all the research I did it essentially came down to “Vista stinks for games, Microsoft needs to update the OS, and you’re outa luck until then”. When I built my new computer, I used Ubuntu 12.04 until I got Windows 7 (it was either that or Windows 8; I got it free through my university). To be safe, I have always stuck with Windows 7 since then. If it’s not having its little fits of “I don’t wanna work” anymore, unless the person is building an entirely new system, then I don’t see an issue of sticking with whatever is more readily available [i.e. cheaper].

The GTX Titan is a great card performance wise, and tbh i was planing on buying maybe 2 of them for my current rig. That was till Nvidia release the expect retail price.
Taking the price into account the Titan is a POS. Your paying 100% more(double) for a ‘up to’ 60% (max) performance increase over a 680. Total ripoff. In the UK it costs around £950, a good top end 4gb 680 costs around £450.
450/100 * 160 = £720. So the absolute max the Titan ‘should’ cost is £720.
Untill the Titan comes down in price i wouldnt recommend it to any1 becouse there are cheaper ways of getting the same performance.

The Titan is a GPU for the enthusiast as of now; not a GPU for a gamer who has any sort of budget. It is purely for those who will pay any price for any increase in performance.

Theres ‘the gamer’ …theres ’ the enthusiast’ …then theres ‘the rich guy’.
The 2011 chipset of CPU’s was aimed for enthusiasts, and yet many people who use said CPU even admitt that the Titan is to expensive for what it is. I have no doubt Nvidia intended to aim at the people who have more money than sense, but i question whether it was a wise decision ..i doubt they will get the sales they expect.
As it stands the Titan is only worth getitng if ur getting 2 or more, infact technicaly its only worth getting if ur geting 3 or 4, as 1 or 2 can be beat by cheaper setups.
Even still, if u include 2, 3 and 4 way SLI Titan setups, thats still waaay more than even the average enthusiast is willing to spend on GPU’s.
4 Way 4gb 680
4 Way 4gb 670
4 way 3gb 660ti
4 way 6gb 7970
4 way 3gb 7950
All are considered enthusiats level setups and all are cheaper than 2 way Titan setups, and faster or atleast as fast.
I know there r those who will buy the Titan ..but they r not ‘enthusiasts’ ..atleast not normal ones.. they simply have more money than sense, otherwise they wouldnt let Nvidia rip them off so badly.
