So, as a lot of you have noticed, for the past 2 weeks in particular (throughout the past year there have been other cases of the same issues but it is more rampant now than EVER), many have come across not just crashes, but BSODs while playing Guild Wars 2.

My husband and I upgraded recently to Windows 7-64, and upgraded to 8gbs of RAM. The thing is, we did not have any of these issues prior to doing so. It wasn’t until recently, and while playing GW2, that this fiasco began.

After following multiple procedures to fix the game, none have worked. Unfortunately, even after uninstalling and deleting all GW2 files, our computer continued to BSOD randomly afterwards. I looked up dozens and dozens of possibilities and still have not been able to pin point the issue. Although, my husband did take some advice via tech forums to solve the BSOD in particular, we are crossing our fingers that it worked. (And yes, we checked everything!)

I have a theory to run by you guys, because well some of you probably know more than I or my husband about hardware/software. Our theory is: that because GW2 has a tendency to really push a system, and because of recent wonky programming and coding or patches (some have looked into plenty of memory leaks), that the game could possibility corrupt drivers or system files and cause computer hardware to the extremity of causing BSODs, and in turn causing damage to systems. It could be small, or even to just push some system parts to become faulty or corrupt in general over time due to extensive game play. (I think I put in about 400-500 hours give or take a few hundred since the release, and sometimes anywhere between 1-2 hours or 5-8 hours of game time throughout a day.)

This is just a theory, but it seems very likely don’t you think? I just don’t find it to be a coincidence that SO MANY are experiencing these issues and ultimately don’t find a fix, or have to essentially replace old to new parts for a fix. I know it is a stretch because there aren’t many cases of game files to do this, but it is about the only one right now that makes sense.

Thoughts?

GW2 will never BSOD a system. In fact, almost all non previleged software will never BSOD a system. If a game does BSOD a system then blame your hardware and OS. Windows do not crash as often, so I am blaming your ram.

GW2 coding is woncky but it will never crash windows.

Software will not damage hardware unless the hardware is defective to begin with.

Most of the time, BSOD’s are an indication of bad hardware (including settings) OR corrupt/incorrect device drivers.

You mentioned that you ‘upgraded’ your OS. Was that a clean install (which includes formatting the HDD) or an actual upgrade over the existing operating system?

If it was the latter, you should really format the drive and do a proper install. It’s been my experience that OS upgrades (without a clean install) generally don’t quite work right.

In regards to the memory upgrade: Was it completely new RAM or did you add more to your existing RAM?

A good thing to check would be the memory timings and voltage settings in BIOS. What happens sometimes is that BIOS will incorrectly detect RAM settings. Make sure the settings match the manufacturer’s specifications.

Also, if this computer is overclocked at all; try setting everything back to default settings – at least as a test. Good luck.

You can also check the BSOD dump files that are created. In there you will see what went wrong. And then you can fix it.
You can find those files in c:\windows\minidumps
If you have trouble reading them, just put them online so we can take a quick look and help you out.

This indeed is the best way we can help you, post the .dmp files and we can go over them and see whats making the system unstable. A game will not cause a system to BSOD, it will always be the sub system it runs on, the only thing a game can ever really do to BSOD a computer is when the PC is not being cooled well enough be it fault of the cooling system, lack of cleaning, or hot environment, causing the system to over heat and shut down. Other than that, it is going to be driver/hardware/corrupt install related.

I’m with abomally on the “upgrade” install. I can confirm that upgrade installs over an intact os cause more issues than freshly formatted installs.

You confirmed that you didn’t have any issues prior to that and even after uninstalling you’re still experiencing these issues. Also, make sure all of your hardware is seated properly, sometimes when upgrading one piece another one gets bumped and doesn’t make good contact and can causes random crashes.

Well i have a clean install of windows 7 64bit MSI gamers laptop with 8 GB DDR3 RAM.
Never had any bluescreen till 1 of the SSC patches.
U say that software can never give a BSOD, but why do some people get a BSOD only after the SSC patch?! Don’t u think it’s strange?I would like to hear your opinion or those of the devs. we alrdy have this bug for like a week w/o any info of the devs or a way to fix this.

“Blue screens are typically caused by software errors in device drivers: in NT-based Windows systems by poorly written device drivers, and in the Windows 9x family of operating systems by incompatible DLL driver files or bugs in the software kernel of the operating system. They can also be caused by physical hardware faults, such as faulty RAM or power supplies, overheating of components, or hardware which is run beyond its specification limits (”overclocking")." – Wikipedia

So i’ve no idea what your SSC patch means (i can make abbreviation too if you want like TPLM so that you don’t know what i’m talking about, but it will not help to those who try to help) Anyway, maybe whatever patch you are talking about mess around with dll’s then yes you can have problems. But then again it is not the fault of the game. All it does is copy files from one location to an other. If your computer failed to copy a file, then you can have problems. My gw2 game works everyday without problems, so maybe you have a hard disk that is not very stable or something.

SSC as in southsun cove the place of karkas.
So do u suggest that i do a total reinstall of GW2? To get rid of all failed files?

why GW2 keeps crashing, BSOD, my theory...

Btw, c0000005 error is not a bsod crash, just a regular old gw2 crash that tends to occur when gw2 is trying to complete an action, but can’t. I haven’t actually seen the devs acknowledge what exactly that error code means, but it is not a bsod crash. I had that crash after march 26th, the culling update, and only got it in WvW until they released a patch for it about 1week later. You may be experiencing a faulty hard drive or an odd windows bug… It is a fairly unstable os, if you even sneeze at your computer wrong, you can fudge up the windows registry. Typical culprit is bad dll files.

Anyway, gw2 causes its fair share of crashes if the stars aren’t aligned perfectly sometimes, but not bsod crashes. Personally, I run gw2 on 3 systems (pc and Mac), and know about 10 others who play with zero issues, so I think those with these crashes, though it seems numerous really aren’t the majority of players. Are you possibly over clocking or something?

It isn’t the game crashing, it’s Windows crashing – then the game crashes.

Troubleshooting ntdll.dll crashes involves checking the things we all mentioned above. A rootkit/bootkit or virus infection can also cause ntdll to crash.

Btw, c0000005 error is not a bsod crash, just a regular old gw2 crash that tends to occur when gw2 is trying to compete an action but can’t. I haven’t actually seen the devs acknowledge what exactly that error code means, but it is not a bsod crash. I do got a overclocking option on my MSI but i disabled it because i know it’s not good for a pc or laptop.

Intresting but my problem is that i don’t know where the problem is. Can a simple CCleaner run fix these bugs?

I would like to comment to those people that say Software cannot cause a BSOD and that it’s your hardware and/or OS. That is inacurrate as software can infact cause a BSOD due to bad coding. An example is from an MMO I will not name (don’t want to taint these forums with the name hehe).

What was happening was if you took a flightpath from a particular major city to any other destination, during the flight it would BSOD. If I recall corrrectly this was only happening to people with more then 4 gigs of ram. If you had 4 gigs or lower you were fine. This was because of a coding issue related to memory addressing. After a patch was released for the game the problem was resolved.

I would suggest making sure you’ve run and installed ALL of the windows software updates, especially service packs and drivers. Run a repair of gw2 by adding the -repair tag to your shortcut. And double check your internal hardware to make sure it’s all seated well and cables are plugged in fully.

Just a couple things I could think of off of the top of my head that are easily implemented and tested.

(the only reason I don’t think the bsod crash is exclusively programming is because not everyone is experiencing this error constantly or more frequently than usual, but maybe Anet implements different builds randomly to test them out – odd thought)

And again, if you have a BSOD, dump files are created. You can open them with bleuscreenviewer and you will see what caused the crash. So you can fix it easily.
