only way to make a proper tournament would be to run the same system as Season 1, but with ALL servers (EU + NA) in the same tourney. Due to the volatile performance of EU servers, this kind of tournament could go any way imaginable (EU servers are so close, that even one guild being lazy for two-three weeks can drop the server down a rank or two)

These are locks to happen because of the swiss style format. Between JQ/TC one of them will finish 3rd and the other finish 5th. That result will be determined by the week 9 matchup. Assuming BG doesn’t lose a matchup, the next 8 weeks are meaningless.

If you’re on Dragonbrand, you’re never going to face Blackgate. It’s going to Mag every week and SoS 50% of the time and the JQ/TC loser the other 50%.

Swiss tournament of course got invented to order 50 players within 5 rounds of 2-way matches, not to order 6 servers over 9 rounds of 3-way matches

And of course any league is boring if the result is 99% determined by the scoring function (masses over 24/7) and totally independed how people play.

Why do people assume sos will beat tc/jq?
SOS will not beat either.

I completely agree. I don’t see the virtue in the current structure. If you start at the top of silver league, for example, there is literally nowhere you can go but down. A.net spoke at length in interviews about how they wanted to have less predictable / more dynamic matchups. I see very little dynamism in Gold league, and less in Silver.

This looks pretty spot on to me. I highly doubt any 2v1’s will happen that might change these outcomes. DB could possibly get a 2nd place beating mag if they either got thier act together or TC helps 2v1 mag. SOS for whatever reason hates DB with a passion and hits us kitten every map gernerally leaving Mag alone on their bl for the most part. DB not really trying though its mostly smaller guilds looking for fights getting blobbed by huge SOS blobs. DB doesn’t scout upgrade defend or place/refresh siege for crap.

The entire idea of the leagues, seasons, and especially the swiss tournament structure are based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how WvW matches are decided.

A swiss tournament is used to sort an unseeded field according to quality, by matching competitors with similar tournament records together until only one undefeated competitor remains. That competitor is either declared the winner or is awarded the #1 seed in a bracket elimination round.

The application of this format to WvW does not make sense for several reasons.

First, the starting field was obviously not unseeded. Whereas in a normal swiss tournament, we would expect the strongest competitors to arise from different original groupings and eventually meet eachother in the final, the original groupings of this tournament were the same as the tiers formed from the glicko rating. Glicko is used for the explicit purpose of matching up servers of similar strength. So basically we are getting the matchups we would normally expect in the last round of a swiss tournament, in the first round instead.

Far more seriously, the idea of the swiss tournament fails to understand that WvW is a format in which upsets through luck, politics, or skilled play are extremely rare. WvW matches are decided through the systemic issue of coverage. So each server has certain opponents that it can expect to either win or lose against with 99% certainty.

As a consequence of both of the above, we are going to have a situation where the swiss format and the inevitable outcomes are going to constantly pull the matchups back into their original arrangement, since the servers were already sorted according to strength to begin with. This is how many players have been able to project with considerable confidence that, for example, DB will never see BG, or that and SoS-Mag-T1 matchup will never occur, etc.

The swiss style is pretty poorly adapted to a 6-server league, to say the least. It’s good that there is the potential for “underdogs” to place higher than stronger servers, but it also has the potential for very repetitive matchups/servers never matching against each other. I think people are too pessimistic about the whole picture though…it’s a 9 week tournament, many things can still happen. In S1, the top 3 placings were thought to be a forgone conclusion, but it didn’t turn out that way.

I disagree with you saying Dragonbrand doesnt refresh seige etc. I am a defensive commander and Dragonbrand is doing much much better at the defensive role. We have many commited to defense. I know the past hasnt been that way but we surely have a focus now.. as for the end rankings. We will see. at the end of 9 weeks we will know. Going to be a fun 8.5 weeks.

Looks likely that JQ might not finish 3rd with 25 points as people have predicted if the current matchup is anything to go by.

3. Lost Coast – Recently got tossed into the T1 fray because of SoR transfers. Militia is weak and extremely squishy. Just go with the flow and double team whoever they want, mostly to make the other server angry or for their own gain.
4. Sea of Bags – Throw bodies at you endlessly. Bags for days
5. Maguuma – Very glassy. Good NA, I guess.
6. Dragonbrand – My old server. I remember the days when FA and TC used to double team us all the time, good thing I’m used to it by now being on JQ. Decent militia, some good commanders. Almost certain they will finish last, Maguuma will finish right above them.

Stackgate will mostly likely win and grace us with another Michael bay movie. Doesn’t really matter who comes in second or third unless you’re playing for reward. Good luck with that if you are.

We’re going to come in third because our server has for some reason forgotten how to havoc..
Having solo or small groups of people to harass the enemy camps, yaks and towers does a lot more for the server than people are aware of. Prior to seasons it was a lot easier to get away with soloing these sorts of things but since seasons started TC and BG have been not only zerging harder than ever but also sending out multiple havoc groups. While on JQ we’re doing nothing but barely clinging to our territory and neglecting to prevent enemy towers and camps from being upgraded.
I literally gave up trying to do it myself because I’d always end up running in to 3 – 5 people. Some can win those fights, I can’t.. I’m simply not skilled enough.

At this point, I’m starting to predict us placing 3rd in gold if we keep neglecting to havoc. Solo can’t be done with how many small groups the other servers have.

This is not the season 1 league. This new season uses a swiss-style match-up system where the winner will fight the other winner servers. This means that the loser of t1 and winner of t2 will constantly swap places for 7weeks. SoS will finish 2nd in a 7 week period since they will have more wins than JQ or TC. Unlike season 1 were JQ/TC would come in 2nd.

Not to hard to predict. The leagues are far to small to have any kind of “real tournament” feel. The Swiss style has not seemed to change the landscape your basically locking everyone down in the same way you did last tournament.

I completely agree. I don’t see the virtue in the current structure. If you start at the top of silver league, for example, there is literally nowhere you can go but down. A.net spoke at length in interviews about how they wanted to have less predictable / more dynamic matchups. I see very little dynamism in Gold league, and less in Silver.

The entire idea of the leagues, seasons, and especially the swiss tournament structure are based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how WvW matches are decided.

A swiss tournament is used to sort an unseeded field according to quality, by matching competitors with similar tournament records together until only one undefeated competitor remains. That competitor is either declared the winner or is awarded the #1 seed in a bracket elimination round.

The application of this format to WvW does not make sense for several reasons.

First, the starting field was obviously not unseeded. Whereas in a normal swiss tournament, we would expect the strongest competitors to arise from different original groupings and eventually meet eachother in the final, the original groupings of this tournament were the same as the tiers formed from the glicko rating. Glicko is used for the explicit purpose of matching up servers of similar strength. So basically we are getting the matchups we would normally expect in the last round of a swiss tournament, in the first round instead.

Far more seriously, the idea of the swiss tournament fails to understand that WvW is a format in which upsets through luck, politics, or skilled play are extremely rare. WvW matches are decided through the systemic issue of coverage. So each server has certain opponents that it can expect to either win or lose against with 99% certainty.

As a consequence of both of the above, we are going to have a situation where the swiss format and the inevitable outcomes are going to constantly pull the matchups back into their original arrangement, since the servers were already sorted according to strength to begin with. This is how many players have been able to project with considerable confidence that, for example, DB will never see BG, or that and SoS-Mag-T1 matchup will never occur, etc.
