Thiefs doing more damage than siege
You already have to deal with the slow server which do not load a thief in time (they already do damage before you see them while they should come out of stealth as soon as they push an attack button) and than their damage output is that high? Anyone with the developers ever realized that it is an unfair fight if you can not see them because of the loadingtimefailure and the high output on damage?
lol?
sweet, I am ready for bed now.
Thanks.
I am wearing full ascended gear and having 2122 toughness and 3089 armor and yet a thief hit me for 7,458. That is totally ridiculous even siege doesn’t do that much damage. Hahahahahaha, I enjoyed this, thanks.

I would probably agree if it wasn’t a matter of numbers. The best player in the world will get hit the same with the same set up and variables on both ends.

False. The best player in the world knows how to mitigate damage from key attacks.

His point was that the better player would not get hit in the first place from a burst, meaning that he would not take the same damage. Many classes can do more dmg than siege, it’s not hard, and just like siege, the dmg from another player can be mitigated, GW2 is not about number stats, it is about active play and mitigating damage rather than tanking or out DPSing the other player, what matters is player skill.
Clearly siege damage needs to be buffed then.

no they die at the same time XD
Meet vertical progression in Guildwars.
Berserker gear has three stats that multiply with each other. Armor is one of the defensive stats you can increase (the others being vitality and healing power).
Ascended berserker hits 30% harder then exotic berserker.
This thief won’t be the only offensive pc you’ll see hitting you harder then a few weeks ago, you just notice it more because, well, it was unexpected.
You want damage, try a warrior eviscerate – I got hit for 16k … nothing you can do but laugh.
Here’s some nice thief damage.
80 Ranger (3), 80 Warrior (3), 80 Thief (3)
80 Ele (2), 80 Engi (3), 80 Rev (2)
Doesn’t have to see a thief to dodge, when you know he is there, you can guess when he’ll attack. Thiefs are so predictable.
ps.: why is a mesmer complaining?

Yeah, that’s pretty standard for stealthy-CD/backstab thieves. Actually, its kinda low. I’ve seen them hit WAY harder (around 12-13K). I was double teamed by 2 of them once and could only stop one of them from hitting me at a time with my guard and they just burned right through my protection and aegis. They are nasty, but nowhere near as bad as they used to be.

There’s a slight difference between thieves and siege though. Thieves have an “AoE” cap of 1.

Instead of running to the forums crying for nerfs, you should better analyze what has happened to you.
Let me help you out a bit:
Steal → CnD → Backstab
That means the thief was visible to you and at < 900 range away from you. Steal teleports him right to you. CnD hits you + stealth. Backstab from the back deals great damage.
Next time when a thief runs to you, you should be prepared for this combo. All you have to do is dodge the CnD.
Don’t expect your holy glory ascended stuff alone save you from death.

Exactly.
There’s a slight difference between thieves and siege though. Thieves have an “AoE” cap of 1.
Thieves have the same AoE cap. Just that only one weapon hits all 5. Sword cleaves 3.
Thief daggers hit 1 target, while a piece of siege will hit 50. I feel silly for explaining this, even though I know you’re just pointing out some technicality.

I know. It’s almost as if I play thief in WvW and know its AoE limits. Not everyone plays dagger thieves.
It is funny hearing people talk about siege limits, though. I know guild leaders who don’t even know the AoE limits. It’s kinda sad really. Even if you don’t use ACs a lot you should know that keeping 25 people in the AoE of a superior AC or two is just not a good idea.
“But the AoE limit is 5!”
“….and you are dead because you are an idiot”
Someone hit 7k with one of the highest damaging attacks in the game?
I dont see a problem.

True, but the OP is specifically complaining about D/D, so I was referring to that. I just find the comparison to siege ironic. God forbid a thief hits a single player harder than a piece of siege hits 50 players.

Right? I mean, I’ve been on the receiving end of a 18k backstab, but that was because we were both super glassy thieves having a Mexican standoff in stealth. First one to pop out dies.
Thats a low hit, that thief should l2p

Don’t expect your holy glory ascended stuff alone save you from death.
1. You can trait Steal to be 1500 range with Long Reach – I run this with my thief when glass cannon backstab because you need it (you don’t want someone interrupting the key sequence combo – see below) so the whole ‘see the Thief coming’ is a not a true counter.
2. You can activate (push the button for) Cloak and Dagger and before the actual swing connects, then quickly activate your F1 for Steal in the middle of the activation. Because of this there is virtually no way for you to counter insta-Steal and Stealth (along with things like Bountiful Theft or better Thrill of the Crime to make the next hit far more devastating – but I prefer Hidden Killer so you can run a good full power/Valkyrie/Berserker set and still land auto-crit backstab for even harder damage)
3. The next step is Backstab and you only have to be in the behind 180-degree arc behind the target which is easy to do 95% of the time (lag works both ways).
If the target is engaged with anything (like the original poster of this thread), it is 99.9% going to happen short of an odd Fear field/Stealth trap lying below the target or an untimely Aegis refresh. Also if the target is engaged with anything, they are already probably dead with the level of burst output and Aegis is down from their engagement (and likely Endurance for dodging is low too).
In all honesty, it’s kind of cheesy and while it has been nerfed (culling being fixed is the biggest piece of this months back). 1/4 of a second reaction time at best by the target without passive defenses (there are virtually none except Aegis) isn’t a whole lot of a gap.
Remember, that I am using Basilisk Venom as well for a 1-1/2 second Stun in case you do have reflexes.
Also remember that the Thief will also likely enter Stealth again for the stomp (to prevent other players/creatures from interrupting you) and for you to not have ‘seen’ the Thief for more than 1-second at best during the entire engagement.
If the target does survive the initial burst…well, it’s not likely they are going to survive the next 3-5 seconds (if alone or even duo with someone else) anyways unless they have hard CC landing or can enter stealth themselves which is also no guarantee since I’ve done the damage.
If it completely fails on the initial burst or I get stunned, I can then stealth and choose the next time to attack with Shadowstep (1200 range break stun teleport away) or Shadow Trap (insta return to the 1500 range spot and gain 5s stealth as well but requires knowledge of the terrain). But more than likely, some other ‘easier’ target will become available way before then.
With a multiple-Thief team and semi-coordinated, it is unstoppable (short of a zerg/blob/massive numbers advantage) if you have terrain/LoS advantage.

“But the AoE limit is 5!”…
Wow, lol, if they’d ever used one of those they’d have known it’s quite a bit more then 5 …. Seeing all those bleed numbers popping up is a pretty sight for the defender’s eyes.
… If you’re facing a thief and have your back turned to him, you deserve to die.
I face thieves on my staff ele running PVT with zerg trait setup and seeing (this is the important bit ) a thief, can easily avoid any backstab damage. They tend to be extremely squishy too, so a bit of damage pressure and they stealth and run away.
CnD-Backstab is powerful, but is telegraphed pretty obviously. I simply dodge and lay down an aoe skill on my feet.

Yes, thieves are cheese. Limburger at that.
You just got to realize that Anet likes cheese and accept it. That way you won’t rage as much.
Working as intended.
Don’t support the Gem Shop, it’s that easy.
Oh, OP, just pray you never run into a full glass-burst ranger. They’re even worse then thieves. Sure you may kill em by just looking at them. If you survive long enough to see what happened

nurf teef pls!!!! its unfeir!!
i play with 10 – 15 fps lol on a 2007 i mac
and never had this lag time on thief’s
I was wearing full glass one day and got hit for an 8k C&D and 17k backstab.
Ouch.
That said, most thieves don’t scare me too bad when I’m roaming in full glass. The only time they’re really a nasty threat is if I don’t see them coming and they do the Baslisk Venom→Mug/Steal→C&D→Backstab or some variant of that.
20/20/30 PU build using full PVT gear…. I’m speechless

Everyone goes through this process. First you want to blame everyone else. Then you realize you just need to learn to play…and you blame yourself for your losses.

my personal favorite; 21k Maul build for rangers. Pop invuln signet when they hit you first time, then smash their face in with a burst that far outdo what they can produce themselves.

Hard counters to thieves:
1 – other thieves
2 – mesmers
3 – condi bunker engineers
4 – trap rangers
5 – bunker guardian
6 – any character with Norn race and “become the snow leopard”. 1600 range stealth’ed dash. Thief never knows where you go.

haha, don’t complain about just thieves then. My ranger can hit you way harder than that if your wearing full toughness gear.
Looking at your stats, it’d probably take me 4-5 seconds to drop you with a simple burst. I can’t imagine you doing a lot of damage either with those stats, so perhaps it’s time to think about dealing more damage to your enemy to drop them faster.

1- ignored and removed by thief before backstab lands on you
2-goodluck fearing what you cant target
3-unless you’re standing on trap/mark thief will just shadowstep and troll you not to mention only immob and fear traps would be the only life savers
4-cant react to what you aint seen /unless you’re a tank yoour stun breaker wont save you from the backstab and finishing touch
7-auto attacking blindly isnt a counter plus swinging a gs if anything will help thief aim for your back.
