I mix up with eithe Wh or Axe off-hand. Depends on what i’m doing.
Certainly has it uses.
Edit: Yea i read his Post. I just think immob is way better than cripple.
even when you take into account extra damage done to crippled opponents?
would also like to know what that LB/Trap build was, sounds interesting.
Might isn’t something bad for Ranger, to be honest. If you take FBond (which should’ve been baseline) your pet will also get these mightstacks and only in this scenario Ranger’s damage is increased compareably to increase on other professions (because of Ranger/Pet damage split).
We have Mighty Swap, Jungle Striker (as horrible as it is) and then sigil stacking might on crit (which isn’t a bad idea on shortbow/sword especially).
Sure, we lack mightstacking levels of facerolling D/D elementalist or Hambow, but it’s quite possible to maintain over 10-12 mightstacks over fight and keep pet nearly capped, around 20 might stacks (with Skirmishing Adept trait).
Think a build of that flavor wit those traits would work better with a condi-hybrid/short bow (as you said) build as opposed to a full nuke Zerker as the OP wants
Drop Signet of Beast Master and Take read the Wind.
and yea, i’m feeling a full Sig for this type of build. Was planning something very, very similar to this. A sorta One hit wonder, do or die approach.
Example Rapid fire damage = 10k (just for example)
Rapid fire as is now is 10k / 5 seconds = 2000 damage per second
rapid fire post patch is 10k / 2.5 = 4000 damage per second
so, it’s being doubled. Therefore same damage over shorter time equals increase in damage per second.
… did you take into account that most if not all world bosses a crit_immune?
really depends if it means the following:
15% of total damage combined of the two (the so called 70/30) divided as a 10/5 between the two. or;
10/5% of the individual current damage pools (as Solandri calc’d)
I’d guess the latter to be honest. I think this 70/30 thing darkens the waters a bit at times. Should really think of Ranger doing 100% of their Damage plus a pet doing 100%
of theirs and combining the two rather than seeing them both contributing to the same 100%.
why the kitten would they censor 4.5?
What sort of PvE Marciez?
If you’re just soloing around doing ya thing then who care’s what dps you do as long as you’re having fun, anything is viable.
If you’re doing dungeons via PUG though then what the guys said above rings true, you’ll need to be running a sword to get much joy.
Just remember to flank often/always with SB to get the bleeds, probably best run with a bear/dog pet to hold agro while you circle
Thanks for the thoughts/feedback guys
So i’m interested in the communities opinion on which of these stats is more important/Useful for a Ranger. Is it better to have a higher damage Resistance or higher HP?
My gut feeling leans towards Damage Resistance because lessening the blow coming in seems intuitively better. I have no maths/Calculations to back this up so was wondering what everyone else thinks, either from personal experience and investigation or some cold, hard numbers.
Yea i get it may be PVP/WvW/PvE dependant but i’d like to hear all sides for all game modes to get a feel.
Because i like having a pet I can utilise and control and for Ranged combatwith my Bow….
…Why I play a Ranger here? God knows…
I’ve been running this mostly full Zerk and in exotics in PvE:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAsXTjMq0ua5KWsw1iABhaZAMvtiB2LQFsBuGiUeSKULF-e
and this when i fancy a dungeon:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBMhNakRl2VLXxiFuWDIIULDg5ldCUBbgzjYJS5JpQtUA-e
They play very similar just the dungeon one is a little more party buffing and blasts fields nicely.
what’s your kill/death ratio roughly?
Me likes! Bow is viable, so there!
sword/dagger maybe for evasions or Sword/Axe for Axe 5
Axe/Axe for trash, Sword/Axe for boss?
Meh, misses out on warn horn which is good party buff…
absorbing all conditions for duration could be an option….
Again, thanks everyone for your insight, appreciate the constructive advice.
Right, i need to improve my melee as a Ranger and would like some thoughts on reasonable melee builds i can use to familiarise myself with in general pve that’ll be useful going forward in dungeons and anything which has transferable skill into pvp.
Idea’s?
yes, because i can sit at a distance and fire my longbow and nothing can hurt me its fi…. oh i’m down
Retaliation is manageable, but watch out if a Reflect gets thrown your way though. I imagine that a lot of players are going to end up downing themselves because they used Rapid Fire and didn’t pay attention.
Not paying attention gets you killed regardless of class to be fair…
but as i’ve said before, there will be many uninitiated Rangers Rapid Firing their own faces to death and then wondering wtf
You go Taku!
=Hugs his LB=
think what I’ve garnered is i need to learn how to melee with my Ranger better :|
It just happens to be so that the melee weapons have amazing escapes while ranged weapons don’t. You could try running with LB and sword + dagger too while roaming, you just need to get used to the bouncing and learn to control it to your advantage along with the terrain to lose line of sight. This way you can still keep your beloved LB but still get away when needed. Just keep your mind open, try new weapons and builds!
As for your server, Gunnars is a pretty solid server wubwub-wise. Nice pug groups, lots of highly skilled roamers. Till Friday you are against Aurora Glade (Lots of condi ganking groups, watch out and get your running shoes ready) and FSP (These guys tend to run with big numbers).
One of the most important things you need to get is the buff foods. Get either the -36% Bowl of Poultry and Leek Soup or -40% Bowl of Lemongrass Poultry Soup one. The -40% is a bit more expensive one, so running with the -36% is good enough really unless you are swimming in cash. This will help you to keep on going, and trust me, you will notice the difference when your food runs out in the middle of the fight…
Cheers Frou for the insight.
This way you can still keep your beloved LB
- kitten right beloved!!!!! hehe
Like that apart from circle of life as i personally hate traiting for downs. Why not Natures Protection or Strength of Spirit?
do you think LB barrage will be viable?
Pretty much the topic of debate since the info about the next big patch came out. (Well, the viability of any LB builds)
Don’t think we have a conclusive answer as of yet for the overall concept, but Barrage still roots you to the spot which makes you a sitting duck
Just a bit of theory crafting but what do you guys think of something like this?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQRBMhd+1IhKlr2tiDLctGgQoWFAtXhiNrZvADwFkxGnM7B-T5QIwAMLDA4gAE4JAAA
Not sure on runes and such but the Plan being to basically draw your targets in before laying down the pain. Keep alive via rampage and SoS then trap damage, stack some might and melee/blast away etc etc
Could be horrendous, more thinking out loud…
So…
I braved the big bad world of pvp for a bit last night and had an interesting experience.
While walking around solo i managed to kill a couple of sentries, escort a resource run or two and then captured one of those resource making thingys back.
I ran my generic pve build and only really encountered pve things to kill. So was a win-win.
Having not been slaughtered mercilessly by pvp i retired undefeated
If you want to transfer to a higher tier server and become involved with organized WvW play, you’ll probably want a GWEN class to get into that guild, as that is what most competitive ones try to recruit mainly (aside from the occassional thief/mesmer), but they’d let you bring ranger once you’re in and once you’ve proven yourself as competent.
That’d be too easy, i’m not abandoning my Ranger! heh
Let’s see post patch what happens. And if i have to lead a one man campaign for Ranger love then i will!
and to your previous comments BearBow and LB4 abuse make me twitch too. I normally hit LB2, 3, 4, while closing followed by GS 3,2,5 but skip LB4 when i’m not soloing. Will throw an f2 in there at some point pet dependent
Well Bleh! lol
Not quite what I wanted to hear.
what we need is 3 man ranger hit-squads synch-smacking rapid fire/barrage on targets with some condi thrown in and pets making a pain of themselves, bird/cat/dog or drake combo would be nice…
more of a Zerg outrider role as opposed to full roam…

think what I’ve garnered is i need to learn how to melee with my Ranger better :|
helluva post nearlight, thanks for the insight.
Again cheers guys, some decent advise.
Is there Ranger hate in WvW as there are in dungeons/fractals? Will the fact i’m sitting deep and spraying away in a selfish-ish (stutter much?!) build rile the masses?
I’m on Gunnar’s Hold.
Cheers Belzebu,
So, tag along with a Zerg to get my bearings and while have sub-gear. Got it.
Question, while with Zerg is it like being with Dungeon party, should i be having SS and Spotter type support stuff up or should i be going more selfish?
So, i’m going to brave WvW for the first time later. I’ve generally only really played PvE in my GW years so i’m looking for a little advice in my foray into PvP.
*top 3 tips for a beginner in WvW
*rough idea of what build to go with
Gear wise it’s not great as it’s only a recent 80. have exotic LB, rare armour and pathetic accessories. Think my preference will tend to roaming. Well, i’m happy as long as i am able to use my LB really as i dislike melee with a Ranger as a first choice weapon.
So fellow Ranger types, what’s the plan?
(edited by AdziH.2360)
One of my favorite things lately is to run up front in a stand off and turn on the axe 5 and see how many rangers I can almost kill. New patch should make it even more interesting.
It’ll be a very fast suicide as they’ll no doubt be rather glassy. Will be fun to watch people rapid firing their own face to death
wonder if an axe/dagger may be of some use especially as it offers another cripple…
In roaming and small groups, sure, easy access to cripple and chill to trigger the new GM trait and an extra evade and poison is always good. but I personally prefer /axe over /dagger :P
=nods= what i was thinking. I like the short down-time of /dagger compared to other offhand
Yea, basically for other classes both passive and active affects of the Signet effect the player. Rangers were alone where active affects were only effecting the Pet.
There was however a trait that could be taken to make the affects effect the player too. So with this update that trait is now redundant and a new one will replace it.

I’m more thinking of the entangle buff the makes better in larger group fights, and we can free up another 2 traits point as we don’t need to signet trait.
if going lb 2 points will stay where they are for Read the Wind instead.
you really think it’ll stay at 6 seconds? more likely be 6 seconds for pet 3 for Ranger
My gut feeling is people are really overestimating what an axe is going to do in a zerg. Compare it to warriors or guardians, who are already running around with huge cleave angles, high stacks of might, and tons of CC. Not to mention everything else they bring to the table.
Tend to agree with you to be honest. It’ll still be kitten, but less kitten than before.
Hurrah for Longbow Woooooo!
Fed up of being told to use a melee weapon….
ETA is the other side of September earliest I think from listening to the noise across the forums.
Will it become known as a mighty power Ranger….
Then all you need to is factor in one of the norn racials in and we have the Morphin’
Oh, and make running a lazy sig build in pve veeery easy.
quick thoughts:
Mostly positive, enjoying the LB love, shame for Traps and pet mechanics.
There are going to be cries from the masses though; GroupThink says that Rangers are the ginger stepchild; mildly neglected and generally ignored. We will be able to open some eyes with these changes and really do some damage. Already can see a 2Sig 1Spirit build lb/gs or lb a/h running amok.
Happy days until it gets nerfed to hell. Lap it up while it lasts.
Odd, they work fine for me. Anyone else having an issue?
Agreed with both you guys, the issue is in no way pet dps, god forbid Anet get it in their mind to increase that!
Like the idea above Ather about basically outsourcing the Supp role stuff to Pet. have them more Con based and claw the raw dps back to the Ranger.
