Is GW2 dying? Just a question, no hate

Maybe I’m just showing my age but the idea that the amount of youtube spam can be considered an accurate way to gauge the popularity of the game seems laughable to me.

It wouldn’t surprise me if player numbers are down at the moment, since there’s not a lot of new stuff going on, but as other people have said GW2 was designed around the idea that players would come and go from the game. Because it’s not subscription based they’re not as reliant on keeping large numbers of people logging in on a regular basis. As long as people come back when something new does happen (and I think we’re due for another big update sometime soon, in the next month or so maybe?) it’s not a problem.

Considering one consistent topic on the forums lately has been complaints about spikes in the gem price I assume either there’s enough active players to keep sales up or a small number of players are spending a hell of a lot more money than they usually do for some reason. Since most of the items released recently aren’t actually new, and they’re all things each person would only need to buy once it seems unlikely to me it’s a few people spending all that gold, but I could be wrong.

From my experience, all MMOs have ebbs and flows when it comes to active players. Typically these ebbs and flows coincide with the cycle of new content, i.e. new content = more active players, while old content = fewer active players. As others have said, we’re currently in a lull when it comes to new content, which means there are going to be fewer active players as people who have gotten bored with the existing content are off to the next big thing. As soon as new content is introduced, players will return.

The thing is…once summer hits, this should be the prime time to be releasing content. Its not only Anet that does this, but other video game publisher’s as well. Most kids arent in school, so now they should be playing more. Yet…no new games come out, and mmos seem to just go on hiatus. Its like there’s some threat coming they want to get out of the way for…

What’s that over the horizon? Its getting closer….OH GOD STEAM SUMMER SALE! HIDE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR CREDIT CARDS BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!

My experience has been that video game sales and promotions generally die down over the summer because most people (both kids and adults) have many more options for how to spend their time. They’re more likely to be outside spending time on other hobbies than inside playing games.

When I worked in a video game shop the only systems doing big promotions around now where the Nintendo DS and the PSP, and that’s because they were counting on parents buying a new game (or even a new console) to give kids something to do while in the car/on the plane to their holiday. Other than that it was usually clearance sales to make room for new stock that would come in after the summer lull.

But I don’t know how that would apply to MMOs since they were a very small part of what we did, unless a new expansion was coming out for a big game.

It would actually be interesting to see the number of active logged on users in an MMO charted monthly over time, so that we could see if there is a standard dip around summertime. I’ve always assumed the same as you, that MMO game developers don’t target the summer months because people are more inclined to do outdoor activities. But it could also be that publishers are so stuck in the mantra of “release games around the holidays” that it forces a particular development schedule.

What is your favorite Ranger build?

PvE Meta Events I love using the build I took from this thread…

This is basically what I run as well, with a few slight tweaks. I’m sure it’s probably not “meta”, but it’s crazy fun for me. LB is just dull for me for some reason.

Why gear drops exist at all?

It turns out that people prefer constantly earning ‘something’ rather than mostly nothing with intermittent bursts of good stuff. For example, look how many of us are looking for any sort of reward from accumulating XP (after maxing masteries).

Despite my understanding how skinner boxes work and how much of this RPG/MMO setup owes itself to the original D&D (and all its pre-computer issues and standards), I find that I’m with the masses: I like getting lots of stuff better than getting lots of nothing. I prefer a lot of RNG over tokens for everything.

This is generally my opinion as well. People like getting stuff, even if most of it is stuff they won’t actually use.

I agree w OP the game is too easy and there should be more competition between players so that we have a challenge. Too many noob players and generic ppl who “play this game to relax after work”. They ruin the challenge and suck the life out of all games and gaming communities.

I realize this is formulaic, but if you’re looking for “competitive PvE”, this is probably not the game for you. There are plenty of other MMOs out there that provide that style of gameplay if you need it – most recent one that comes to my mind is Black Desert Online. GW2 has never been about that, and if they change it now, they would alienate the vast majority of their player base.

Step it back to the '80s

I think a reconnect feature may work better than a save point. I’ve gotten disconnected multiple times trying to finish the final chapter in the PS, the Arah story mode while solo. And even if I don’t disconnect, that takes a minimum of an hour to finish. Disconnecting five minutes from the end is a real morale killer.

This happened to me last week, I was on the final fight of the last part of the personal story, and I got disconnected because my internet went down. Had to replay the entire thing, which took close to an hour. Needless to say I was very irritated.

I am really surprised that they don’t have checkpoints or some other way to resume progress if you disconnect in the middle. Things happen, and no one likes to have to replay content.

WvW doesn’t give PvE experience anymore. Quickest way would be to use tomes of experience, or buy HoT and get a free level 80 character. Beyond that, just do as many events as you can, they typically give tons of experience.

Release inactive char names

I loved Neverwinter way of doing it: the name had to be unique only within your accout, meaning you could have only 1 character named Knoxx, but other players could have Knoxx as well. It was done by adding account name to your character (Konxx@accountname), but displaying only the character name part. Since after adding someone to friends we can know his acc name, i think it would work in GW2 as well. And i would love it

Agree, this would be awesome. I still don’t know why more games don’t do this.

The problem with releasing names is that it’s hard to tell when a name is inactive. Since this is not a subscription game, people go inactive all the time. For example, I took a two year break from the game after my daughter was born, and would have been unhappy if my names had disappeared when I came back.

Argh, OP idea of competitive is obviously different from the norm.

And that’s why all the salt. Sometimes changes are good. Old populations have to step down and let the young ones take over, it cannot always be old one’s game. But some are just willing to grip on with their last teeth and do whatever it takes to make the game as stale as possible and unchanged, when in reality, the majority of the population no longer wants it, it’s just the relics of the old ones.

Wow, just wow. You are trying to redefine the meaning of competitiveness, literally. It is like trying to change the meaning of eat to the same meaning as drink.

In that statement, I did not once refer to competitiveness. I merely stated that the population is rigid and does not like sudden changes. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and trust that others may have good ideas too.

In other words, the population likes the way it is now and isn’t interested in the same thing you are. That doesn’t make either of us right, it just means that we have different opinions about how the game should be.

For me personally, one of the main reasons I am drawn ro this game is because it’s cooperative. It’s the ultimate multiplayer experience – you join with a bunch of other players to all accomplish the same goal. I’ve played MMOs for 17 years now, including being in competitive high end raiding guilds. But once you get to the point where you don’t need to “beat other players” in order to be happy with your life, you can focus on enjoying the game and having fun without worrying about what others are doing.

There are plenty of other MMOs that are competitive. I’d rather keep one of the few cooperative ones the way it is, and let the people who are attracted to the style you described find a different game that better fits what they want.

One of the advantages that MSI has in my opinion is that they do an extremely good job in the cooling department. I bought an MSI GT72 Dominator Pro last year (i7-6700HQ, 980M, 32 GB RAM, SSD), and I have no problem playing GW2 on max settings with only medium fan speed. If I turn the fan on full, the laptop stays roughly at idle temps, but I prefer not to do that unless I’m wearing headphones or not paying attention to the audio.

The downside to MSI is that they are expensive, and the laptop above is way overkill for just GW2.

I’m running v364.72 with a 980M on Windows 10, and have had no issues. Generally get 60+ FPS on ultra high except in extremely crowded areas. Haven’t tried the latest version yet, will probably try updating tonight.

Just wanted to leave a quick “Thank you!” v364.72 works perfectly so far!

Awesome, glad it is working well for you.

Add me to the list of people who have fallen in love with this build. I was trying a LB build before, but just wasn’t feeling it Immediately after switching to this build I knew this was the playstyle I had been looking for. Thanks!
