S/D works well enough. It has higher burst than D/D but has slightly less mobility. Also has a bit longer range but some of the spells are easier to dodge (i.e, you can make Fire 3 hit three times if you put it slightly behind a mob).
Not sure if you’re looking for a PVP or PVE build, but this was a good discussion concerning S/D elementalists. He runs 0/20/0/20/30, but I don’t see why 0/10/0/30/30 couldn’t work.
