Another thing to do is go out into the lowbie area’s and practice your CQ combat there. The mobs there are much less punishing and give you more room for error when learning.

I did the same thing as you in regards to leveling and beginning 80 play, I was GS/Staff for the longest time and it took me a while to get used fighting up close and personal. Learning how to time dodges, blocks, and blurred frenzy is the key to survival and took me some time to do effectively after switching to a melee style of play. Start in some easy areas and work your way up as you become comfortable with each area. You’ll be good to go in no time.

yep, I am not used to close range fighting at all. Good idea to go to low lvl areas to try this out. I should probably start with lower lvl weapons as well to get a real feel of how I should be playing close.

I also was at a disadvantage before I came back and was on very low internet and using a mac I now have much better internet and a pc so that should also help a bit.

thanks, I am going to go try some of your suggestions and see how it goes. I want to eventually feel like I can let go of my GS and use different closer range weapons, and only use range like GS/Staff when necessary, but still need that security blanket to move far away right now when I get low on health lol

Just as the title says I took a long hiatus. I want to try to learn to play at closer range and need suggestions. I’m at lvl 80 and was able to clear the map before I left, but I basically sucked. I was using a GS and staff as my only weapons and I was thinking to switch to sceptor/pistol to ease into a transition of being closer in pve/dungeons. Thoughts?

Remember now I suck, and want to get better.

I played around with sword/focus, but was going down way too fast, so not sure I can handle that as of yet in pve. I know I will go down prob 100% with that in dungeons.

So is it silly of me to switch to sceptor/pistol + GS (getting rid of my staff for most situations) then later move to sword/focus and keep the sceptor pistol as 2nd set?

Just trying to figure out what can transition me to a better player, but not expect me to melee all the time from the get go.

Mind you all of these ideas are for pve/dungeons only as I really do not like pvp or wvw at all.

yeah that was not the issue, but thanks. It seems my drivers for my card were running funny for gw2 I set them back 1 and now it is downloading, weird…

Yep already tried that, meaning running as admin. It is not the exe that crashes that installs it is after that when it goes to install the client or whatever that it crashes. It keeps trying to put the files in my temp folder and something is not liking this, idk if it is my puter or the game that causes the crash

The windows edition I have is windows 7 home premium, but it is Service pack 1 64 bit that is in there not the entire windows software

I just finished building a new rig and was hoping to be able to play sometime soon. I dl the exe file which is sent to C:/ downloads folder. I am able to execute this file and then when it is finished it asks me if I give perms to allow the program to run, I click yes then it just crashes.

It is trying to dl the files to C:/users/myname/appdata/local/temp/g’_allowinstall
I cannot change the directory in which these files are going, which I ‘think’ is the issue.

I really want this entire game on my D drive as I use the c drive for my ssd on boot, but it is insisting it goes to my c drive, so i would have to manually move it, not sure why this is the only program of software I have installed that is giving me this issue, but GW2 is the only problem here.

Steam is working fine when I installed it into my D drive (hdd), skype, ts, photoshop, etc, but GW2 is a huge issue. I have actually even tried to redirect my firefox to install downloads to C drive again to see if this would fix anything, but it is not.

I have tried taking the exe file and inserting it into a desktop folder and then taking the other files going into the temp folder and putting them in desktop folder along with exe and re-running, and still crash.

I have a builder’s edition of windows 7 is there something I am missing to run this game? I installed .net framework, flash, java, etc so something is wrong.

Any help is appreciated.

I was wondering what the heck everyone meant I was running a typical shatter build so I went to look at my link again and I linked to what I am currently running and HATE. I spent a lot of hours changing it after reading tons and then forgot to update the link lol

gorma~ I have been running with a staff /GS up until level 80 now and I am so unhappy with the staff that I barely use it. I have no doubt that for certain people it is great, I just do not get along with the staff and find myself always using the GS for everything. It may be my play style though.

thanks for the input. I had a toss up on the dueling and Illusions. Toting a pistol offhand and having dueling at 20 it gives me a bit of extra range on the duelists deception, but at the same time with the sword in main hand I have to be fairly close for attack. It was really a toss up there on 20 in dueling or adding the extra 5 in illusions, but you made a big point there.

Looking back Pyroatheist’s traits are totally different. 0/0/20/20/30. As far as the gear, yes it is somewhat similar in what I am thinking, although we do share a few differences in thought. Grimms, is also different in that the traits are 0/20/30/0/20.

I suppose this is what I was questioning to begin with whether my traits seem to be set up with my gear and give a nice solid balance.

I have been playing at lvl 80 for awhile and now want to change up my mesmer. I would love if someone can take a look at my build and give some thoughts or feedback on what you think.

I am trying to stay at higher lvl maps and run some dungeons. I am not looking for pvp play. My goal is to stay alive, not take hits that throw me down. I do not want to be a glass house. I really am trying here to be stronger, take less damage that kills me fast, and a bit of power, but with good balance between them. I am not concerned with critical hits to foes much because I figure if I am strong and health is good I can give some of that up, am I correct?

I would have liked to have swiftness as we all know mesmers are slower, but it seemed not worth it to give up some other things I felt were necessary.

Also, I want to gear up my armor with power/vitality/toughness, thoughts on that and what to throw in the slots for weapons?

I threw in the slot 8 of arcane thievery because I tend to go down a lot when I have quite a few conditions thrown on me, it’s not the best space to take up, but that is one of my play weaknesses.

I WAS one of those that ran everything with magic find in my armor slots (dummy here), but that is not cutting it at lvl 80 anymore for me and I am more frustrated with not having the above mentioned. I would rather give up the magic find and use a boost or food than to lose interest in the character.

nevermind deleting app folder for GW2 fixed it.

I was playing fine since I bought GW2 last year, now when I try to log in after updates I can not longer get a play screen. I did upgrade to mountain lion in the meantime, so I do not know if this is an issue?

I really want to get back to playing, but I get the screen to log in to my account when I launch GW2 then I hit play and it goes to a white screen and I get the mouse pointers for GW2, but no character screen to get into the game (just blank white screen).
