Hey guardians,
I have a couple of questions about DPS-Support Guardians with Altruistic Healing.
1. Given the protection, regeneration, vigor, and activated heals of guardians with AH, could I go full berserker in PVE (dungeons in particular)?
2. What runes should I put into my armor? I’m thinking of either (a) two each of fire, hoelbrak, and strength in order to maximize might uptime (and DPS output) or (b) two each of the boon duration runes. Would you suggest other runes?
3. What sigil should I use on my GS and Staff? I’m thinking strength would work well with AH and maybe precision on staff.
4. Do I even use the 2 ability of the GS when the 1 ability does more damage (or am I looking at it the wrong way and as such should hit it whenever it is on CD).
5. What do you guys think of radiance? I see a lot of people going 0/0/30/30/10, what about 0/15/30/20/5? The additional precision brings the pre-buff crit chance to 45% from 40% and you get more DPS with vulnerability stacking with blinds. There’s also the minor (still nifty) bonus of refreshing F1 with every kill. Is the 20% reduction in 2h skills better than those?
@Sifu.6527.
I started with 180g. I spent 130g on that ill-fated series of attempts at getting a dawn. I got back around 20g after that. (I also pitched 25g to my girlfriend who wanted Final Rest). I didn’t need 200 gold to buy all 478 because:
1. I have maxed out weaponsmith (gift of metal)
2. I had a several stacks of mats in my tab.
When the prices of T5 mats fell I was able to get the requisite 15 mats per attempt for 15s so each attempt was no more than 25s including the mithril and wood. A rough estimate of each MF attempt would be at 1g. That’s approximately 130 attempts which coheres with the 478 greatswords that i created.
It’s way cheaper to make your own greatswords.
Also, I think I spent less than 400g on my lodestones. I converted cores and farmed COE. I went for those gifts first in the off chance that I might get a precursor from a chest. My original plan was to save for another two to three weeks and buy the precursor outright. I realized I didn’t relish going for another three weeks of hardcore COF farming so I tried my luck. Was it a bad idea? On hindsight it is but that’s -on hindsight-. Had things turned out differently it would have been a brilliant idea.
At any rate, I’ve decided to work on another character and focus on other goals aside from grabbing a precursor. At a leisurely pace, I’m now back to 50g. I’ve learned my lesson and that is to just stop grinding and do what is most fun.

You misunderstand. Actually I still have half of my gold left. What’s depressing is the realization that the most efficient way to get to that point where I can actually afford a precursor on the TP is to grind COF mindlessly and/or play the TP instead of the game. That’s what’s depressing. The Sunrise (I’ve wvwvw’d, I’ve gotten Dungeon Master (before the nerf), and I’ve gotten what ascended items I could. ) was the (only) goal I was working towards and the Dawn was the only thing getting my way. It was either I gambled or painfully ground my way to the requisite amount of gold to afford one. The thought of going through COF for two to three hours whenever I can was just too much.
By the way, if anyone is wondering, /age is at 750.
It was fun while it lasted but every ride has to stop at some point. It’s hard to get back into the game after getting crushed by the mystic forge.
I started working on my legendary three and a half months ago. Around two weeks ago I was able to complete the gifts needed and all I needed was the precursor. At first I was going to save up for it and buy it from the tp but it occurred to me that I wasn’t up to playing the tp and farming COF for the requisite 450g I needed. So I decided to just chuck the gold I had to the mystic forge. 478 rare greatswords later, I got zilch. I know, RNG is RNG, but it’s still downright crushing. To make it even more crushing, a guildmate chucked in 4 random rares into the forge, not greatswords mind you, and got a Dawn while I was flushing money down the mystic toilet.
At any rate, I know others have gone through this as well. It’s another one of those stories I know but if you are reading it I hope you are prepared to lose a lot if you want to get a precursor now.
Have a good one guys.
I listed for a stack of weak blood for 80s. I paid the 80s but the buy order was not in my buying list. What gives?
I did fractals 19 earlier this afternoon. I tried entering the level 20 fractals but I wasn’t allowed to. What gives? I am sure I finished the level 19 fractals because I was beamed back up to Dessa’s lab and on the upper right hand side it indicated that I was on 20.
Longbow it is. Wait, what sigil should I use?
@Proven even if the sigil of strength has an internal cooldown (of two seconds according to the wiki) wouldn’t you still get more out of the longbow since you get two attempts at getting a might stack with the longbow as opposed to one attempt with the rifle? Or am I missing something with volley because I think that is where most of the DPS of the rifle will come from…
@Schwahreit, those were the things that lead me to believe the longbow is superior but I see lot of people saying that rifle has superior single target DPS so it made me wonder.
On a related note, if say I’m not going with superior sigil of strength, what sigil(s) should I use to maximize DPS?
Given that I am running full berserker’s with 2x Fire, 2x Hoelbrak, 2x Strength as my armor runes in a 10/30/0/30/0 shout build, what would give more single target DPS: A longbow with a superior sigil of strength of a a rifle with a superior sigil of stregth? While people swear by the rifle, I’m kind of wondering how the rifle could out DPS the longbow given that it can give you two stacks of might every 3/4th of a second and a nuke on a ten second CD.
I run 10/30/0/30/0 GS with the healing surge (mending works too for dungeons with a lot of conditions), shake it off, FGJ, and OMM. I use GS and Longbow for backup. All my armor pieces are berserker. My Sigil is Strength, my runes are two of fire, two of hoelbrak, and two of strength. I find that I can DPS like crazy and stay around long enough to DPS once I figure out the fight mechanics. It all boils down to making the most out of your two dodges and whirlwind to maximize uptime. With this setup I can maintain almost 100% uptime on 25 might stacks and dish out punishment up front or from afar. With this setup I can also clear conditions and give the team a bit more health with shout heals.
25 on Arms (longer bleeds, greatsword might skill), 15 on Defense (adrenal health), 30 on Tactics (boons give damage bonus, faster shouts, shouts heal) is what I use with knight’s gear. Allows me to tank, dps, and give out heals and condition wipes.
I did some dungeon runs last night and saw why you would prefer to go with shouts rather than healing banners.
One more question though, you opted to go with rampager’s for more damage. I have to ask, what role do you usually play in dungeons? Do you usually pick your spots, get some bleeds in, all the while buffing and healing party members or do you find yourself in the thick of things pseudo-tanking most of the time? If you’re tanking, how do you stay alive without the toughness?
I opted for knight’s because it’s often the case that I’m the tank or the decoy in a party. Aggro seems to lock on to me most if not all of the time.
I don’t see the point to shield in PvE. Try a warhorn and you’ll never go back.
This.
The problem with the shield in PvE is that its abilities and synergies pale in comparison with those of the warhorn.
Shield stance is a nifty interrupt but it has a hefty cooldown even when traited. It doesn’t do much considering its cooldown.
Shield stance gives three seconds of invulnerabilty every 30(24) seconds. It is useful for predictable damage phases and getting out of the thick of things but other than that it is underwhelming.
Compare that with the warhorn, when incorporated into the right trait setup, you get 100% uptime on swiftness, fury, and might, the ability to turn conditions into boons (you actually want to get poisoned with the warhorn), and you get insane mobility (vigor on over half of the time means that you get to dodge more often. This matches the invulnerability of the shield to some extent).
If you do want to go for the shield, your best bet would be to go deep into the tactics line and go with the shout cd reduction trait and the banner-regen trait. For utility go with FGJ, SIO, and the banner of your choice. Toss in soldier runes and you are solid.
Yojack, I have been using this build for a while now and I have to say that it downright rocks in PvE. I have been playing PvE exclusively so I don’t know how well it works in PvP or WvW. This build makes me extremely valuable in dungeons and allows me to do a whole lot of things for my team. Thanks!
I have a couple of tweaks though. I prefer knight’s to rampager’s for the additional durability so I can actually tank in most situations. I also opted to switch out the healing-shout trait for the banner-regen trait. I switched out OMM for the toughness/vit banner and noticed that the regen did comparable healing to the shouts while providing additional stats. What are your thoughts on this?
