I just did this for the seventh time, and had the fortune to find this forum before I pitched my keyboard out through my bloody window.
What I did to complete it was fairly simple; instead of killing the mobs en route to the exit, I simply stopped in front of them and allowed the NPCs to follow after me. I did this for each mob on the way, and the group seemed to follow without a problem.
