Back when I set this up for myself, I just pointed Steam at Gw2.exe, no need for any launch options or any need to bypass the launcher. The overlay’s never not worked for me.

Any thoughts as to why it wouldn’t for some?

I have no idea… It worked for me couple of times as well without any problems, it works for my girlfriend perfectly now. Nobody knows why exactly this problem appears for some players.

Some people are having problem with their Guild Wars 2 and Steam Overlay, that Overlay simple doesn’t work and that’s it. No clear reason why it is so. I had same problem and finally found a solution that works perfectly.
Main problem with Steam Overlay and non-Steam games are non-Steam games that use launchers to launch game. Guild Wars 2 is no exception. So simply solution would be launch game directly with game’s .exe, without launcher, BUT… Guild Wars 2 uses same .exe to launch launcher AND game, there is no different .exes to launcher and to game itself. But i found solution how to launch game directly, without launcher, and solve Steam Overlay’s problem. And here it is:

1. First of all, add Guild Wars 2 to Steam library as non-Steam game (Library – Add a game – Add non-steam game and search for Guild Wars 2).
2. Then go to Guild Wars 2 shortcut in Steam Library, open Properties and in Target line, after “… gw2.exe” add these commands:

-email youremail -password yourpassword -nopatchui

So Target should look like this:

“X:\pathtogame\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -email youremail@gmail.com -password yourpassword123 -nopatchui

NOTE: If your password includes spaces, type it in " ", example:

“X:\pathtogame\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -email youremail@gmail.com -password “your password 123” -nopatchui

And that’s it! Now Steam Overlay should work if it didin’t before.
