Hi, I am concerned about a rumor i’ve recently read, that AoE attacks are going to be nerfed even further. My main class is Elementalist, therefore, most of my skills are AoE, therefore, I’m concerned that my class will be made completely useless.
To be a hundred percent honest, the few MMORPG’s that I have played, they always make it so one class is better than the others…. and what I tend to find, is that they always make one class stand above others. The last game I played, everytime they tweaked a class, the next time they would make changes to the weakest class, they would make it the godly class…
so far, in my SPvP experiences, i’ve found that all the classes are technically the same. As an elementalist, i’m using a bunky(ish) build…. I can survive a good deal… which honestly, is what makes me love this game, cuz the other games i’ve played, each class has their own role, and honestly they always make magic classes squishy. Well, back to my point, in my experiences in this game, with a bunky elementalist, i have hardly lost any battle. but despite this, I find the game to be really well balanced. I am not that great a heavy hitter, the only times I empty an enemy’s health quickly is when they are running with a glass cannon build. But despite this, glass cannon builds hit like a truck… I may be able to kill them quicker than any other build, but if they managed to land a few successful hits on me, I am done for. Now all the other classes that have a somewhat balanced defense/offense build, I tend to have a durable fight with them, they don’t damage me all that much, I don’t kill them quickly. And then those who have a bunk build as well, they too, tend to not die… at all…. normally those duels tend to go for MINUTES.
What I heard about the coming nerf to AoE abilities, is supposed to be due to players inability to resurrect down players. As I was saying before, in previous games that I have played, they tend to either weaken way too much, or buff up way too much a single class… what’s happened with those class that are weakened, is that the players of that class tend to stop playing that class. I don’t wanna stop playing my elementalist, I love it the way that it is. I think that rather than nerfing classes, in order to balance them out, my opinion would be that you guys boost other classes by adding something to their current skills + traits. For instance, for every weapon, if that weapon has an attack that only does damage, add something else to that attack… maybe instead of only doing damage, it will also give a buff that will immobilize enemies for a sec, or it will give evasion, or it will allow u to leap in/out of battle, or it will give u boons, etc….
and to counter being easily killed by AoE to those players who are ressing, I think that the best way to counter that… i think it would be to give a buff to players who are ressurrecting down players. for instance… it could be a buff that would heal them every second, or it could be a buff that would make them invulnerable for a few seconds, or it could be a buff that would fear those who attacked them for a few seconds, or one that would knock their enemies when attacked for a few seconds…. considering htat when we are down we have different abilities, maybe each class should have a different skill when they are resurecting down players…
I don’t think that the problem is with AoE abilities. To be honest, if you are in WvW, and you and a group of people are fighting against a zerg, and some of your group might fall in battle, if you had several players attacking you (Single targets, NOT AoE), all those players attacking you while you are resurrecting down players are going to be able to kill you. The problem isn’t that players resurrecting down players get killed by AoE…. to be honest… the problem is that when they are doing so they are defenseless… They can’t attack, they can’t move and resurrect from a safe distance….they are just kneeling there, doing nothing, but taking attacks. The real problem honestly is that they are doing nothing while taking attacks… IT IS NOT that that the AoE attacks are extremely powerful.
And while we are on the subject, I think that attacking only 5 targets with AoE is absurd. If thousands of enemies (whether players or mobs) are allowed to attack us.. why are we allowed to only attack 5? I think that instead of only attacking 5 or so, maybe it would be best to reduce the damage to after say.. attacking 10 enemies…. or maybe not reduce, but spread the damage all around (like in WoW)….
SORRY IF IT’S A BIT LONG…. LOL BUT basically… the 2 main questions i have are…. what armor/accessories i should get for it to work? and how much precision would i need as well?
i want to build my guardian with empowering might trait…
the way i’m planning on doing it is:
valor 30 = IV Strength in #, V Purity, XI Altruistic Healing
Honor 30 = II Superior Aria, IX 2-handed mastery, VIII Empowering Might
Virtue 10 = II Vengeful
i’m 80…. still haven’t got an armor/accessories tho… i just made the guard a few days ago… planning on using altruistic runes….which is mainly for healing, already bought them and just right this moment i placed an order for “Superior Sigil of Perception + Superior Sigil of Life” on the TP… so i would get stacks of + Perception + Healing
nevertheless… i’m having a bit of a tough time deciding what stats/armor + accessories i should get.
I know I would need a lot of precision for EM to work (HOW MUCH?). and i’m thinking of getting the AC’s armor with Precision, Vit, Healing power…. but that would potentially leave me with a low toughness, which, even if I have good heals + vit, I doubt I could survive much if I take a lot of damage. though thinking about it … i might have more health which might mean i get hurt harder, but would still have a larger mana supply so it might come out to about the same….
also idk what accessories to get either…
so i was hoping that you guys might give me your insights as to what would be the best choice of armor/accessories… what kinda stats i should look for that i wouldn’t be afraid of dying in a couple of hits… i mostly wanna focus on healing/support… but at the same time make sure i live long enough to keep them heals going and not die in a couple hits if i lack endurance

okay… so i don’t know how to build an elementalist… and when i say… i don’t know.. i mean how to combine traits + armor/runes etc… when it comes to traits… i don’t really know what i should do… for the most part i hate running slowly, so i always put points into air for the move speed skill… right now i’m air 10, and 20 for earth, water and arcana each
i have always sucked at pvp in any games i’ve played, so i never really bothered with it… i tried it today the spvp… i tried to choose weapons and accessories in the mist with vit and condition damage…. and well… i wasn’t doing any damage, and while i wasn’t killed right away… i couldn’t really kill my opponents…. -and it was always 1vs1 the few times i tried tho it pizzed me off so i didn’t try it much lol
when it comes to pve… i honestly don’t know how good i am either… i mean… mostly what i’ve been doing is AC dungeon to make gold… so that i can finally update my accessories cuz they suck…but anyways… like if i’m in a high level area playing with a friend or whatever, i sometimes think that we kill monsters at about the same speed… but sometimes i think that my friends kill them faster.. so it makes me wonder if i don’t make much damage….
so if it’s not too much of a bother, can u guys help me with building a really destructible + durable elementalist? not a glass cannon or a tanker/supporter… but u know a good mix of both…
if u could tell me how to spend the traits, what major traits i should choose, what kinda stats and what kinda runes i should use for my armors/weapons/accessories?
Honestly, when I first read ur question, I thought u were crazy, cuz honestly, I think that earth is awesome… immobilizes + bleeds… the most important aspect of earth is keeping bleeds on…
But after reading what u said about earth symbolizing protection, I do see your point. Nevertheless, to be a hundred percent honest with you, I think that the most important thing about elementalist, and perhaps, every single class, is how u control them.
While earth might not have protective skills, it does excellent bleeding DoT + immobilizes opponent, and the most important thing is that u have to learn to combine those moves with the other elements.
If you need to escape, cuz u r at a disadvantage and u r attuned to earth, slow down your enemy, then put the bleed on them, u can then switch to water heal urself a bit, slow down ur opponent with chill, and then attune to air, and gain speed movement and escape… also remember to use ur utility skills.
Most games i’ve played, mages have usually been the DPS class, and they have hardly had any defensive skills, or none that make quite the difference. So i think that u have to keep that in mind, elementalists are still mage class… but depending on ur playstyle + how you gear ur character u can have a pretty solid mage either for damage, defense, or a balance of both

right now my current build is:
fire = 20 -the greater traits i put them for a bit more dmg + reducing cooldowns
air = 10 – I HATE running around slowly, so i put my trait in the move speed
earth = 20 – same as fire -bit more dmg and reducing cooldowns
arcana = 20 – i did it to reduce the attunement. traits in getting boons while changing attunement, and faster move speed when equipped with dagger
my gear: i crafted a set of armor with power + condition damage + vitality, and equipped it full of nightmare runes from the TA vendors which boost condition damage and duration.
as far as accessories goes.. i have cheap green ones, i am trying to craft exotic set… but i’m really slow at making money so it’ll be a while before i can manage to get my hands on better accessories.
my weapons of choice are mainly scepter + dagger. that’s what i use the most… and during dungeons more often than not i use the staff because i honestly am still pretty squishy… at level 80, currently the most health i have is like 14k
i mostly wanna focus on condition damage… planning on redoing my build… think i would like to put the 20 points of arcana into water instead…. get me some more health…
i have 2 problems… i know there are people out there who kill WAY faster than i do… and also… i’ve seen videos of people with a bare minimum of 18K health, have seen even in their 20k+… so i need some serious help.
i honestly don’t really have a good handle on elementalist, i’m pretty noob despite being level 80 (it was a breeze reaching 80) but hmm i know i suck lol… i’ve checked out other people’s builds and mostly have found precision/power builds… i am interested in condition dmg rather… although…. another problem i have is that i might have to give up on condition damage, considering i can’t really ever seem to keep conditions permanently.
if u guys could please give me some advise on how to create such a build, and tell me what kinda stats i should try for my gear + accessories, maybe even weapons… i would really appreciate it.
