Ranger Tiers?

Rangers is good in sPvP and great at open world PvE and WvW roaming, but sucks hard in dungeons and fractals.

Why do they suck so hard in dungeons and fractals?

Bunmaster,

You argued that support is not a rangers strength and the majority of the support I listed doesn’t require spirits, only proper trait point allocation and +boon duration runes. The spirits only provide additional support and has synergy with the allocated traits; they are not the main focus of the support that the ranger provides.

You state the difference of theory and reality but I’m not convinced that you have actually tried a proper ranger support build or have seen one in action. The recent changes to spirits make a support build even more viable.

Dungeons and fractals favor DPS and support, which ain’t the ranger’s strength.

A properly equipped spirit ranger can provide 90% uptime of fury, swiftness, regen, vigor, one stack of might, and 50% uptime of protection for an entire group with 100% uptime of these boons for the ranger’s pet. Additionally, the ranger can give each party member a 10% damage boost on 75% of their attacks and lays down a 15 second water field. How is this not great support?

Does anyone use Guard giving a shorter cooldown doesn’t make it useful? Who really needs to use guard every 15 seconds?

Sic ’em the only good shout should be 15 seconds, 40 seconds for a shout that the signet is better than anyways.

Guard gives 10 seconds of protection to your pet, which is affected by the ranger’s boon duration. The reduced cool down is a huge improvement for pets inside dungeons.

Sic’em coupled with the jaguar is a devastating combo in PvP. Along with the Pet’s Prowess trait I’ve had that cat crit 7800+ against squishy targets, so a 15 second cool down would be pretty OP. A 40 second untraited cool down is great and this patch is a huge buff to BM rangers.

Still, you have to stack up to get that. Other classes can do that alone without stacking up. I don’t see the advantage over others.

I’m actually curious since I don’t spend time with many other classes, which other classes can get perma regen (besides ele?).
I mean, I guess mesmers can too in certain builds, but I don’t think necros or engineers could do it. I’m not entirely sure about other classes (Guardian can probably do it).

Engineers can and your shortbow can fuel it when their back is turned to you and they have the condition to boon conversion trait. Warriors can easily get perma regen (and give it to all party members within range) with banners and 30 points into tactics. Of course, a banner regen warrior is about as rare as a gw2lfg.com post saying “LF1M Fractals Lv 40 — Need Ranger!”

Faux Sheaux,

Instead of Saffron Mango Ice Cream you should use Mango Pies. Not only are they dirt cheap but you will get more passive regen despite having a lower healing power (662 vs 602 — this accounts for the adjustment in healing power). Additionally, the passive from Mango Pies increases with WvW bonuses and you get an extra 700 health to boot.

Daemon Hawk,

Nice write up on your build and thanks for sharing the entertaining video. I do have a couple of questions, or it can provide some food for thought:

  • Why not apothecary gear over cleric’s (at least for the weapons and armor)? It seems that would increase your kill speed without sacrificing the healing power.

Multiple Gear Setup UI Feature

Typically when running through dungeons I switch out different weapons for certain encounters. Use the right tool for the job. For example, I primarily use staff and mace/shield with my guardian but for an encounter such as Jade Maw in Fractals of the Mist I’ll switch to scepter/focus and greatsword. However, as you progress through dungeons and fill your bags with green and blue loot, this becomes more trouble some as it takes longer to scan the hero panel to find gear you want to equip.

It would really great if there was such a UI feature that lets one define multiple gear setups which can be quickly swapped while out of combat. Additionally, such a feature could also allow one to switch their traits along with such predefined gear sets. It doesn’t make much sense to keep a shield mastery trait when I’m not using my shield.

Thanks.

Highest crit?

Whether its one swing from a hundred blades or whatever… whats your highest crit?

One swing from 100 Blades isn’t that much by itself, the big numbers you see is an aggregate of all the strikes up to that point. As for my largest 100 Blades (and largest crit), that would be 17k which was in a dungeon. I’m pretty sure I had 25 stacks of might on that one.

However, my most memorable crits are in WvW with Eviscerate because the enemy never sees it coming. I was with a 10 man zerg that tried to take a camp only to run into their main zerg. As the situation turned sour pretty fast, I began to retreat and was then chased by 3 people, one of them being a thief who was right on my tail. Knowing that my chances of escaping were pretty slim at this point, I turned and dropped a 10k Eviscerate on the thief that one-shotted him! Of course, he was up-leveled and most likely didn’t have any toughness or vitality but I just couldn’t help to think of the WTF look on his face of when it happened.
