A little bit about what I am looking to do. I’m on Fort Aspenwood with about 5-6 friends, and we’re going to primarily doing small group roaming in WvW with the numbers listed previously. I used my 80-boost on a Warrior, and frankly as corny as it sounds I just am not into the aesthetics of the Warrior. I know that it has strong mobility, amazing sustain, and decent damage (this is from what I have read / been told) but the profession just isn’t really grabbing me.
I want to be that devilish looking necromancer, and get to master those green abilities that look quite cool. So my question is this, and I would appreciate a straight and honest answer that addresses both the strengths and weaknesses of the class. How well do Necromancers fare in this kind of small group roaming WvW environment. How is our mobility/sustain/damage/ compared to other classes. I’ve read how the Thief and Mesmer seem to be the top tier of mobility/kiting/running away. However I’m not really interested in that, I’d like to be able to hold my ground, give chase when need be, and have some means of escape of my own. I realize that’s probably a tall order, but I’d like to see what you guys think who are seasoned Necro’s.
Thank you for all the replies everyone. Based off of what you’ve all said, and my personal play style preference I will stick with the Necro. It’ll be a huge roll of the dice, but perhaps they’ll get some love with HoT.
The only dungeon content you won’t be welcome in is uber serious speed run groups. And with all the balance changes incoming as well as new specializations, you really should just stick with the class you enjoy and make it work. I tried other classes cause the grass seemed greener, but always wind up coming back to my Necro.
Thanks, that is a good point about class specializations and the GS that we’ll be able to use soon. I just wish we’d get some more concrete information about that. Even just knowing that we’d get some kind of escape or support based skills would be enough.
I’m relatively new to GW2, and the first class that really clicked with me was that of the Necromancer. I’m not one who is good at multitasking and smashing a bunch of buttons in a methodical manner is not something that I excel at. I’d like to continue to play this class, but after reading this forum in particular (and to a lesser extent some of /rGW2 and other subforums here) I’m a bit worried about investing my time in making this my first level 80.
So that’s the question. If you look through the topics of this forum, the majority are about this class being poorly designed. It sounds like it excels only at WvW zergs, it’s at the bottom tier and then below that for Dungeons, and in PvP it sounds like it’s mediocre at best because the class is primaried and lacks escapes in order to mitigate the focus that it receives. Please correct me if I am wrong, but that is the general sentiment that I am getting from this class when reading this forum.
I know the most common advice to follow for GW2 is play what you enjoy, all classes are viable. The thing is though, the doom and gloom on this forum really makes it seem like the Necro is a lost cause and I’d be better off playing another class.
Also just out of curiosity, how new player friendly is this class? I don’t have any interest in playing a Guardian/Warrior, so with those out of the picture, how does the Necro compare to the rest in ability to grasp the game play of?
TLDR;
1) Is the necromancer class as hopeless as this forum makes it seem?
2) For a newer player, if a necromancer isn’t worth the time investment, what would be a more suitable class for someone who wants to excel at PvP, but still be able to explore dungeon content.
