Mesmers force people to think if they want to win. And most people don’t like to think expecting them to win. As a mesmer I encounter people who can’t touch me trying to find real me among copies and I also encounter people whom I can’t trick and who easilly spot me and kill. + there are really some counterbuilds who can easilly deal with mesmers.
A mesmer do all his best not to be caught by warrior because if he is caught without any escapes up, he’s dead. + ability to kite substitute lack of speed
And as for “OP” utilities – mesmer is one of few classes who has no dps utilities, so all of them are escape/stun break. Any class going for all surviability utilities can live long. The fact that they don’t do it is not a reason to nerf mesmer.
I will be probably ok if mesmer were weaken. But taking away a possibility to trick his enemy will ruin the conception of a class and should probably make Anet rename him “standard summoner”
I see many thieves advocates underestimate the problem. It’s absolutely true that a skilled player can counter thief, or atleast escape him. And in fact any player who at least try to think, will definitely find a way to adjust his class to countering thieves.
But the problem is not a whine of particular person dying from 10k BS.
The problem is that, once i created a thief, in starting set up without even reading my traits I pawned pretty many people on low rank. And this game is not only tPvP, I do really enjoy sPvP because of it being fun, though I’m capable of playing high lvl and have not poor MMO PvP Expirience.
But sPvP is inbalanced way too much. You can’t do it alone, so you watch your teammates die like training golems, and half of a a team are thieves. So there are many skilfull thieves, but there are much more thieves who know only 3-4 buttons.
This doesn’t bother good players. This makes average players adjust their character particulary against thief. And that scares the kitten out of newbie players and makes them reroll thief.
If it would be at least 2 rogue per team limit, then I would be ok even with 20k crits.
Rune of the Centaur is my answer to our slowness problem.
Yeah, but it force you to sacrafice kinda a lot, so I preffered to stay pink tortoise
Well apart from alreay mentioned it could have some use for someone who wants to combine duelist with swordsman, since these two are really great. I tried it, but didn’t like the scepter itself. #1 also spawn clones which is not that good because they can replace a phantasm.
Probably it could be used for shatter build to spawn more clones? I’m not aware of this build except that it needs many clones to dps ;o
Yeah, probably staring on all these butterflies a mesmer can’t afford himself running fast) and even Focus is not that good for PvE runing as a passive bonus could be much more convinient. Focus is only 40% uptime 33% increase, making it only 13.2% in passive equialent. And illusions granting faster runspeed is not for PvE runing anyway.
As for Pvp, personally I use it, just because I hope it has atleast a slight impact. Without blink it’s not that easy to chase someone or to runaway. + the cripple thing from sword is only 600 distance and bug sometimes Actually I would like to know how high is speed increase from trait.
What weapons do you guys use against thieves?
I like mesmer staff, chaos storm can daze or chill him and protect you, plus you can phase retreat from them making a combo that gives you chaos armor + your own chaos armor. And I like scepter mainhand or sword offhand with their blocks, well any weapon which let you make thief dump his initiative without killing you.
Same with ele, but prefer scepter + focus. CC+utility saves, and if you lucky enough he may continue attacking you without initiative or some help arives.

I think that all the stealth skills should be nerfed to have normal damage output, and be made to be more along the lines of a utility skill, as they are just a bad design idea for a game that teaches you that you need to watch out for visual clues when dodging. But the problem is also largely that people simply do not move around enough, and generally make stupid decisions. Don’t make yourself an easy target by waiting for the Thief to come out of stealth, while you stand still in the node. Keep moving, constantly, and throw down those AoE attacks and control skills. Look for patterns, ad try to predict where the Thief is moving to. Act, don’t react.
I would be glad if backstab did double damage not from behind but for stargazing targets
Half of people killed by backstab are just

Huh, actually that 2 vs 1 frustration is the thing I really like about downed state, once by some reason you managed two kill 2 enemies, and then die from thrown rock or bleed, you’ll have to watch them throwing you dead with rocks and then reviving and going on fighting like it were them to win, not you. You definitely feel frustrated, maybe even humiliated. Or once you witness 5 men stomping you while you are lying helpless and is only 0,1 sec cd away from blinking back which will give you nothing more then just 2 seconds of meaningless existence -_-
These little pretty things add to game some cruelty and survival instinct feeling while pressing this lifesaving “4” button
If they nerf Backstab, people will still complain but then they’ll continue to complain louder about Death Blossom. Once Death Blossom is nerfed people will continue to complain about Thieves downed state. Once that is nerfed people will complain that Stealth is far too long. Once that is nerfed…
Stealth probably needs to be looked at. Not so much because of thief, but because of mesmer. Their ability to create 3 phantasms relatively quick, and then hop from stealth to stealth while still doing a large portion of their normal damage and remaining invulnerable is a game-breaker. Also, in no other MMO could you regain stealth in combat so often.
I am not sure it’s just to say that “decoy” is a game-breaker stealth 3 sec once per 40 sec. Yes, I personally enjoy mesmer and I agree that its PvP perfomance is great. But absolutely not because of stealth. Most time I use for escaping combining with blink, or to avoid contact with enemy once I’m overwhelmped, or to revive a teammate, it’s an utility skill, not combat one. And thief stealth after steal, after CnD and heal+ increased duraction, but that’s the reason he is thief))
When a team comes back from a wipe due to clever Down State management… you got outclassed.
Golden words, I’ve been lucky to play several sPvP games with thief who didn’t bother to stealth-revive his teammates and it was determenent of some battles.
I don’t mind Thieves backstabbing so hard, but consequences of such situation are kinda mixed. In sPvP there are lots of Thieves, they are easy to play on low ranks and has great perfomance making like 50% of all killing blows, and ofc 2 of them backstabbing you simulantiously leaves u allmost no chances, but it’s ok, I’m more concerned of such popularity of class making sPvP less diverse. Though advantage of big number of thievs is that a decent percentage of them is not that skilled and becomes a free kill after failing to kill you with burst.
So maybe there should be some nerf to control their population.. the class has a great potential, so I’m sure skilled players will suffer not that much.
To be honest I don’t see any reasons mesmers and thieves downstate being OP . Yes, once you down them, you can be quite sure that you’ll need to stomp them twice, but it’s always predictable, while others class “2” abilities are aimed on CC other’s players rather then saving themselves, which can be a good contribution if the your teammates still continue fighting. So it’s balanced in some way, though my personal opinion is that downstate should be more like staying alive rather then having some offensive capacity.
But what should be definitely fixed is Ele downstate. When I switch to Ele sometimes, after being downed I just take a sip of tea without pressing nothing. (sPvP ofc)
P.S. main post really carries much sense!
