It would have been nice to be able to guest between EU and NA servers, and hopefully they continue to work toward making that possible.
I’ve seen quite a few mentions of meeting in overflow in this thread. That doesn’t allow playing open world content together, only dungeons (as far as I know).
This is incorrect. You can play open world content together in overflow. You just need to form a group in an overflow region (Lions Arch) and then you can go anywhere in the world with your group.
The gist of it is that Arenanet is announcing this as some sort of amazing feature, and some are defending Arenanet for whatever reason, but the truth is nothing new is added, only things are taken away.
Before guesting you could travel to any server in the world. Now you have to pay a fee.
You can’t guest on servers across the pond, which is the only advantage that guesting could have given as you can already in the current situation play with people on your own continent by meeting up in overflow.
So in essence you are getting less flexibility, you have to pay gems to what you could do for free before and your not getting anything new in return. Now lets all go out to the streets and celebrate.
I really feel you should rethink releasing this feature until you can release it in a properly completed state.
^ This. 10 million times over. For anyone having cross-continent ties, the new ‘feature’ will be a huge step BACKWARDS compared to the status quo. I would go as far saying cross-continent guesting is one of THE most important applications for guesting in the first place, as many of us want to have their home in our respective region, but have friends on the other side of the pond.
And don’t tell us it can’t be done, ANet. You did it in GW1, too.
The sad thing about this game is that when your looking at the ability to play with your friends this game is indeed going backwards. Not just compared to guild wars 1 but also compared to guild wars 2. At launch we where able to transfer to any location at any time and play with our American friends.
A few months later we can only transfer once a week and now we are going to have to pay a fee if we want to visit a server on the other side of the pond. They are talking about giving us the tools to play together but they are doing the opposite, they keep adding these roadblocks to fracture the community. A really sad state of affairs.
And yet again, it feels like ANet has missed the mark entirely.
The continued development of this game becomes more and more underwhelming.
I generally am happy the direction this game takes but in this instance I definatly agree. I don’t buy the whole “it’s not possible” because of tech excuse, you can transfer to another continent in a heartbeat so guesting should be just as simple. It’s probably just a case of them wanting to finish a feature that was promised at launch and be done with it but in this case it would have been much better if they waited a few more monts to deliver something useful instead of coming with this half baked solution.
This has to be the most disappointing announcement Arenanet has given so far. Guess now we wait till they allow guesting across continents for it to be really useful.
