Free to play accounts will be made available for existing players in the gemstore for 1800 gems.
Bot farmers usually create hundreds of accounts. In f2p they have no loss when 80% gets caught, they still make a nice profit out of the remaining characters that slip through. When you charge 10 euro’s for an account, they lose money everytime an account gets caught, which makes it less interesting for them.
But that only means that bot farmers never tried to begin with. As I said, either way Anet get more cash once cash need to flow out of a f2p account.
Tbh I am not too woried about that anyway. GW2 has decent enough reporting tools and Anet should easily be able to keep a closer eye on f2p accounts. If HoT make the new zones the “endgame” replacing Silverwastes/Orr, f2p PvE will be a non-issue as no one will even care if there are farmers there.
Reporting tools won’t make a difference. Who’s gonna review those reports? Staff that gets hired with the revenue from f2p accounts? The more I look at it, the bigger my concerns are. More lag, bigger chance of abuse, unbalanced wvw and so on.
I really hope I am wrong about this, since I love this game.
Bots,bots,bots,bots,bots…..bots,bots and also gold farms, cheats and hacks. This is what we get in time when the game becomes free, becouse this game is perfect for bots, there is only one thing that protect us from that and that is price for game… This is most stupid and cruel thing you could done to your clients…
Please dont do this!!! You can make trial version and lower price for original game to 10 euro…but please dont make this game Free to botBut… how do you bot PvE, given the restrictions? Someone earlier suggested that bot farmers get 100K gold (lol!), then buy HoT and sell the account for tons of money.
Uhm… If you have to buy the game anyway to somehow funnel the money out of the f2p account, you might as well by the game before and bot farm 10 times as good with no restrictions. And that is no different from what you could do pre f2p. Either way Anet get cash.
I really dont see the issue with these f2p accounts in PvE and sPvP. They are pointless as bot accounts. At worst, they will be ad characters for gold sellers.
WvW is another matter though, thats the only area where I fear f2p may do as much harm as it does good.

As for wvw, imagine what happens when HoT comes out, with paid players who have specialisations and legendary armor. They defeat f2p players too easily. The servers with most paid accounts will have an unfair advantage. Besides, I forsee that many troll accounts will be made. Creating a lvl 60 is not that hard.
There really is no reason for all this hate. The restriction are pretty good, the security is tighter then it ever been, lets welcome the new players, and be the friendly people we are supposed to be,.
It’s not hate, it’s concern, that is different. I helped tons of new players over the years and I am willing to do the same for f2p players. Like I said before, why are there so many restrictions in the first place? Think about it. It’s because f2p games usually attract lots of unwanted players.
Why do you think Anet made all these restrictions in the first place?
F2p usually attracts bots, scammers, shouting kids, trolls and other people you don’t want in this game. That’s why a lot of people are concerned.I assume that the majority of immature players will try the game, see all of these restrictions and become so annoyed by them that they won’t stick around for long. Mature players will understand the restrictions and if the game is for them, they will purchase the full edition.
At least that is how I hope the situation will come about, and I understand that it is not entirely likely to happen.
Well, personally I only had bad experiences with games that went f2p or had f2p servers. I can’t think of one game that has a nice f2p community. Now the veteran players are forced to mix with the f2p players (sorry for all those nice f2p newcomers, I really don’t want to insult you). That’s why I am worried about this move from Anet.
(Snip)
TL;DR: Just another ex-fan that feels fkd by latest change of ANET. RIP GW2, you will be missed.
I presume you didn’t read the list of restrictions for free accounts, did you?

What I have seen sofar: people heavily arguing in LA, and a gem price that went up from 95 gold to 100 gold for 400 gems. On a more positive note: the raids look very promising and awesome!
My only concern about this decision is, usually f2p areas/servers are hell in other games. Lots of immature behaviour, which makes serious players rush into paid accounts or member servers. The only problem is, we can’t do that, since f2p is mixed with paid accounts. The only option would be to hide in HoT area after the release, but I also would love to do my daily world bosses without having to deal with “f2p scum”.
When you think elitism can’t get any worse….
This isn’t about elitism. This is about enjoying a game without having to deal with childish comments all the time. I’ve been playing lots of f2p games and moved to paid accounts quickly because of all the nonsense and stupid comments that were made in chat. Don’t forget scamming and insults. f2p players have nothing to lose. They didn’t pay a dime for their account and are not bothered when they get banned. In other games you usually have the option to avoid this, in GW2 you don’t. That’s all I am saying, and I really hope we will get some nice new players, but I am really sceptical about it.

You are disregarding the fact that free accounts can’t use map chat.
I’ve played f2p games with only say chat, it is horrible.

Wealth transfer is still possible for f2p players. Expect to see lots of worthless items be sold in the TP for 10+ gold.
Thx all for the input. Like I stated above, I am running now at an aweful resolution in low detail, and it doesn’t bother me. The only thing that bothers me, is that I am not able to fight in a decent way because I lack the fps. I don’t even want to run WvW in high or ultra detail. I am not looking for exceptional high framerates. All I want is to be able to participate in fights and not be the fool who goes down all the time because of skill lagg or extreme low fps.
I am on a tier 1 server and yes, it gets hectic with a lot going on at times, but even with my core 2 duo @ 2.1 ghz and Mobility radeon HD 4570 I do fine in most smaller fights. Only in 20+ zerg fights, I quickly lose fps. The thing I wanted to know is,
whether a new laptop could solve that problem for me. Maybe I wasn’t clear in my
opening post about it.
One last try, just to make sure
If I were to get an Asus laptop i7 (2,4ghz) with a GTX 850m videocard, I wouldn’t be able to get 20-30 fps in large battles on 1024×768 with everything on low?
My current laptop gets a whopping 13 fps (everything on low) when I stand still in a borderland. When I encounter a zerg, it drops down to 2fps and I am barely able to use skills. In normal gameplay I get around 20 fps, which worked fine for me most of the times.
Now I want something better than that. Being able to move around in zerg fights without running into walls or go from 18k health to death in 1 second because I am not able to see any marks on the floor or being able to use a healing skill.
Like I said in my opening post, I have 1000 euros to spend on a laptop (a desktop is no option since I need the mobility), if you are all saying that a better laptop will give hardly improvements on semi-smooth gameplay in WvW, it is useless for me to spend that kind of money.
I was hoping to find someone who actually has a recent laptop that is able to get good gameplay in WvW.
A desktop.
Link in my spec sometime drops FPS down low 30fps with 50 players on my screens. All laptop will get hot no matter. Don’t play on your lap.
Get a laptop cooler underneath it.
I don’t think any laptop will keep 30FPS in large wvw. Most importantly choose the best CPU first available. Preferably Core i7 since laptop CPU are 20-40% slower than Core i7 desktop.
Ok, so you have a Nvidia Titan (cheapest card overhere is 900 euro’s/ 1050 dollars) and you still get below 30 fps on low graphics in large zergs? Basically you are saying that it is impossible to get a laptop that is capable of decent WvW?
Asus and Lenovo both are very good in notebooks. MSI is new only for a few years since 2004.
Don’t buy Alienware… overpriced.
Well, I don’t want a debate on whether Alienware is overpriced. There are already enough flamewars on the internet about it
The only thing I want to know is, which laptop will give me around 30 fps on low or med settings in large WvW zergs without getting third degree burning wounds from overheating
Hi!
My Asuran characters complain that they always get killed in WvW because my laptop is hardly able to produce decent framerates (it is very good in causing extreme
heat though)
I am hoping that one of you is able to help me with some advice on purchasing a new
laptop that is able to get good framerates in zerg fights on low or medium settings.
Important to mention is, that I am European, so I am not able to buy at NewEgg or any
other American companies.
Size or brand of the laptop doesn’t matter, as long as it is quality made and doesn’t
transform into an oven while playing
My budget is around 1000 euro’s, which will get me models from Asus with gtx 850m, or Lenovo with gtx 860m. Also MSI and Alienware are in the picture, but they are a little bit more expensive.
It would be nice to hear from someone who actually owns a laptop that is capable
of doing the things I want.
Thx in advance for any reactions
