I have recently been noticing severe FPS drops when playing GW2 since about mid November. I had attributed it to a patch causing something wonkey.

Today, I happened to be in Activity Monitor under the CPU tab and saw a program that was trying to use almost 800% of my CPU. The program in question was folding@home and was from a migrated time machine image. I uninstalled FAH and now I’m getting my nice smooth FPS again. So check to see if you have folding@home, SETI@home, or any similar programs hogging system resources in the background.

For reference, I have a hackintosh 3.4GHz i7, 16GB RAM, and a 660ti graphics card. FPS had dropped to ~21 FPS but after removal is back to averaging between 55 and 75 FPS. I average 70-95FPS when booted into Windows.

I sincerely doubt resetting the SMC would have much if any impact on game performance. When the game client was last updated in October, I was getting 40+ FPS in most areas. Through some of the November patches I’m now lucky to get 20. The only thing changed was the patches. If I boot up the game in Windows I get 70-90FPS at all times on the same system.

Since the Mac client does not allow you to purchase gems still, does anybody know if redeeming a gem card bought from a store will work?
