A question regarding Ranger pets in Lore

Honestly, I’d just slap a “Mechanics!” bumper sticker on this – like the mountain borders or necromancers summoning minions from the corpseless air (as opposed to NPCs in some events summoning them from corpses – Trahearne is, iirc, the only one who doesn’t summon physical minions from corpses) and a few other things.

As a side note, I always explained the summoning of minions, as the necromancer raising remains of various creatures from the soil, and shaping them into a new temporary body, which is then either animated by the necromancer’s own magic, or possessed by a spirit from the Mists.

My main is a Necromancer and this is essentially the way I explained how my Necromancer minions work! :-)

Would my two suggestions (mine and my sisters) be feasable in a Lore point of view though? Is there the kind of magic in Tyria that would allow for both of them scenarios to take place?

We have been told that there is some natural magic involved in ranger taming of animal companions.

The exact mechanics of animal swapping has never really been explained in lore, but the way I tend to think of it is that it’s similar in behaviour to the warhorn hawk summon, Supply Crate, Artillery Barrage, and other skills that call something in from somewhere offscreen. Basically, the companion you don’t currently have active is somewhere nearby but not in the line of fire, and when you switch companions, you’re commanding your current companion to withdraw to a safe place to recover while calling in the current companion.

I’m not keen on that explanation as it would suggest a Ranger has a massive herd of animals following them around at any one given time, hiding just out of view.

The way i’d explain Supply Crate is the use of teleportation device, teleporting the Crate in from a storage facility some where. Similar to the technology used to transport the collectables into the bank- Ore, Harvested plants and Lumber, etc.

I have a sneaking suspicion CHIPS is German and Lostwingman is Russian and wondered if there was any bias in the Tank discussion.

I was wondering if there was any Lore regarding a Rangers ability to summon/unsummon their pets or whether it was simply a game mechanic? Its hard to explain how your Bear just vanished and suddenly a Crow has appeared in its place.

For my Ranger I describe it as a form of Nature magic whereby I’m simply calling/teleporting them from a location in Tyria they “live” and then back again. This could either be a large Farm like area of land my Ranger owns or they simply “live” where I originally found them.

My sister’s Ranger on the other hand prefers to have 1 pet that she’s “linked to” and she describes her switching of pets, differently, whereby she transfers the 1 pet’s soul into different bodies. I tried to rationalise this with some GW Lore-logic by suggesting she’s using a combination of Nature magic for the summoning of the various animal “bodies” (for lack of a better word) and a Necromantic artifact imbued by my Necromancer to give her the ability of Soul transferrance.

Does this make sense is a Lore point of view or am I overthinking it and it could all be done by “Nature magic” in both situations?

Mordremoth's minions (confirmed at last?)

So, at the risk of redirecting the conversation here… did anyone else notice that the Great Jungle Wurm has changed colors?

Another aside- the spikes on that Worm are logically badly designed. They would stop the worm being able to dig! They should be facing downwards if any.

I figure the Dragons sleep close to stronger sections of the Ley Lines, to absorb the magic from them while generating minions from nearby the area to search for other magic releasing objects. They have a stronger connection to various magics and thus place themselves near to a ley line that is also near to their area of “expertise”. Jormag where theres Ice to corrupt, Primordus deep underground where theres an abundance or Earth and Magma, Zhaitan where there was ALOT of death, Bubbles where there is alot of water, Mordremoth where there is forest, Kralkortorik where there is sand (I realise sand is a loose connection to Kralk).

The reactor is placed on an intersection of ley lines where alot of them meet and I think its simply tapping into the ley lines and randoming pulling through any beings from around the areas where the ley lines are being “weakened” by the Dragons heavily draining them. This is why we’re getting native wildlife as well as Dragon Minions.

Mole in Moletariate?

in Lore

Cataclysm.7491

I assume this thread is in reference to your (silly) argument from the other thread and I will therefore answer it as such.

“Mole” as in the animal does not exist in Guild Wars lore as far as we know, therefore to Tyrians, dredge are simply “dredge”, not “mole people”. Moletariate is a play on words by the developers as they stylise dredge as a communist (a nod to communist Russia) mole-like race. IN GAME “Moletariate” is a word dredge use to name their government and the “mole” part of it has NO connection to the fact they look like moles, because dredge have never heard of moles before and could not therefore name their government after “moles”.

Therefore IN GAME dredge should never be referred to as mole people and their ancestors were not “mole people” as they can’t be referenced by other in game races as an animal that doesn’t exist in the universe.

Basically, you were wrong, Konig was right. You said that in game dredge ancestors were known as “mole people” when in fact they weren’t, as moles don’t exist in the game world so Tyrians would have no source of reference for “moles”. The dredge have always been known as dredge in Guild Wars lore.

That ‘silly’ argument’ is not mine. It is all Konig’s and his people. As for you if you had follow the argument. I myself used and will continue to use words like Dredge, mole people, and Skritts. That is when I were conveying my point of view to fellow players. So I was correct in doing that from a real life impartial perspective. The only one time I used dredge and skritt was in that argument when I was being polite to Konig and his people. I am still polite to you all.

So, yes everything are your mistakes when you think dredge when I wrote Dredge and mole people.

All of the above is about that thread and does not cover Cataclysm.7491 ’s line of argument. Do I need to? I have my real life perspective referencing and used it and it did not contradict any in universe lore.

No, you used “mole people” as an IN GAME reference. You said dredge ancesters were known as “mole people” in game. Konig merely tried to point out that was false.

I think its a language barrier problem thats creating the “misunderstanding” here as your recent posts seem to contradict what your original message appeared to be.

It’s quite clear English is not your mother tongue.

Armor Class and Class

Magic classes protect themselves using Magic and therefore have little need to carry around heavy, often uncomfortable and cumbersome suits of armour.

@CHIPS your 3 Scarlet related Lore threads could of all been contained in one thread. I also notice for someone deeply interested in GW Lore, your Necromancer name is cringe worthy :-P

On topic I tend to find myself more often than not in agreement with Konig’s posts about this subject.

Scarlet could be Kudu’s boss and was responsible for the attempted combinating of different dragon magics and is therefore simply testing combining different magics with different species.

I notice in the North of Dredgehaunt Cliffs theres a road that leads into the cliff face. It leads to a large blocked off hole in the cliff with Friendly Grawl defending it, named “Grawl City Guards”.

Is anyone aware of what this is? To me it looks alot like the way ArenaNet have prepared Tengu to be a possible expansion race with the Gate in Lions Arch and the Sylvari area.

Could Grawl be an expansion race? It seems weird as they’re a sympathy race, but they do have good fighting animations/armor fitting.

Lag/Disconnects - Virgin Media

I have been experiencing horrible lag every couple of minutes while playing Guild Wars 2 which leads to being disconnected from the server and having to rejoin.

This has effected me since 30 October continuously til present, making the game completely unplayable for me.

After research I have found this issue to be a fault with Virgin Media and their connection through their Tier 2 hosts “Telia”.

Below is the relevant Virgin Media forum thread, although it mentions the game “League of Legends” I have found this issue also effects Guild Wars 2 in the same way.
http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Computers-Gaming/Possible-League-of-Legends-Latency-Issues/td-p/1445330/page/9

I hope this helps anyone suffering from the same issue.

I’m not sure if ArenaNet can contact Virgin Media and work with them to help resolve the issue faster?

Regards.

The USB’s may be a symptom – maybe GW2 trys to reset mouse + keyboard if it feels its not receiving any signal from them, while the internet is dropping packets?

Cataclysm.7491

Virgin Media is currently having an issue which is causing dropped packets every couple of minutes. I have been unable to play GW2 for the last couple of days because of this issue.

On the Virgin Media forums they refer to it as being an issue with their Tier 2 hosts, Telia and most people reporting it are reporting it causing issues with League of Legends, but I’ve noticed it also effects GW2.

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Computers-Gaming/Possible-League-of-Legends-Latency-Issues/td-p/1445330/page/9

Above is the relevant VM thread- if you try running the suggested trace route (to a league of legends european server) and get the same results displayed in the above thread (unreachable hops), then you are indeed suffering from this issue.

Isn’t the whole point of this, is to have as many options as possible? We should simply be asking for more options. Body sliders for muscle volume and body fat would be great. Additional options for scars and tattoo’s are fine. (Even though I personally do not wish to promote tattoo’s Additional zones for dyeing armor and hopefully weapons. I’d say yes to it all because each of us should be happy with our character creations.

I read yesterday they’re working on character customization for after the roll. So, we’ll be able to modify our current builds as more options come on line.

Haha I love how contradictory this post is… essentially saying: “don’t let your personal opinions sway the fact that more options are always better… apart from tattoos, no one should have tattoos, bloody hooligans with tattoos!”

Asura and ecology

Rangers use a form of nature magic. I’d also argue that because their technology stems from Magic use, it would be more eco-friendly than say, Charr technology, which uses raw materials and lots of burning/fumes. Also due to their technology being originally developed underground (~200 years ago) it would have to work without releasing much waste as it will have no where to go and would slowly suffocate the Asura.

Zoijja appears to be an Elementalist. A Golemancer is more of a title for particular engineering successes relating to golem creation/control and can be held by any Asura no matter the “profession”, as all Asura are tinkerers of some sort.

What professions fit the Iron Legion best.

GW2, misunderstood game

1-80 in 260 hours+, thats not including ALOT of the games content, WvW, sPvP, Dungeons, Crafting for £30? I think thats a very reasonable price / content ratio. Aslong as content is added to keep the world fresh – as in an MMO is meant to be a “living world” and expansions are created in a decent timeframe with content / price ratio as good as the original game i’d say its all good.

GW2 was not missold at all, it plays very much like the impression I got it would play from trailers/interviews/sneak peaks etc.

I disagree with most of the OP’s points and i’d like to simply focus on the OP’s last paragraph.

Quote from OP “CCP/Blizzard/SOE all have one thing in common, they talk to their players, listen to them, and aren’t afraid to make the big decisions when something needs real fixing. It was an unfortunate ride that was filled with more hope than fun. Take care ANet maybe in another 5 years you will put out another game that will be better managed.”

They all have 1 thing in common… their games have been out 6-8 years longer than GW2. ANet handled their previous GW well which gives no reason to doubt them with GW2 at present time.

WoW for example had so many things wrong with it when it was released and they still stuggle expansion after expansion with major flaws in their game. Players describe the whole Cataclysm expansion off as a poor, boring expansion.

I for one am enjoying GW2 and i’m interested to where they take it.
