Name: Chandelier
Main Character: Yawning Cat
Current Server: Ferguson’s Crossing (but possibly willing to switch, if I can get more help/friends on another server. Not much links me to this one, unfortunately.)
Interested Activities: Socialising, learning how to WvW, learning how to run AC dungeon so I can spam it for gear, lol.
Active: Uh, this really depends, but lately I’ve been on at least once a day?
Additional Comments: I think I posted here once before, but it was with another character as my main, who I decided I didn’t like the feel of anymore. Now I’ve got a new one that I’m mostly happy with (except for gear, lol.) Looking for some friendly people who wouldn’t mind teaching me the mechanics of dungeons. :)
Also, this might be a really uh, silly question, but do you have to complete your story to run AC? I don’t know, I hear a lot of people mentioning their story thing when they talk about dungeons, and uh. I haven’t touched my story beyond the first, need-to-do little bit. So yeah, lol.
Just edited this instead of making a new one.
Almost level 70. Will have to change title to 70+ soon.
Hey there. :) I really love your videos (about to watch the tornado one atm, actually), and the fact that you’re inspiring all sorts of elementalists. It’s really great, since I know a lot of them get disheartened from time to time.
But, uh, flattery aside, lol.
I just have a few questions for you, if you don’t mind.
First being, and I don’t know if you’ll remember, what gear did you use before you got your AC gear? Did you just use anything that could give you the right stats? I’m just wondering, because I have yet to acquire that gear myself, and was wondering what would be best to run with while I’m working my way towards getting it.
Also, how long did it take you to get all of your gear?
Also, why don’t you use Ether Renewal? I myself started off with Signet of Restoration, because I thought the healing per skill (when we have so many) was pretty great. But in WvWvW, where you need to have a ton of condition removals, wouldn’t Ether Renewal be optimum? It not only gives you more healing power than Signet (when activated, anyway), but it also removes conditions. Granted, one of the cons is that it isn’t instant, and you have to run around looking like sort of an idiot for two seconds, but it isn’t SUCH a huge issue. Especially if you were to use RTL to give you some space between your opponent(s) and yourself, and then pop that. Granted, I haven’t actually tried my hand at WvWvW yet, so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I was just curious.
PS, sorry if you’ve already answered these questions before, and thanks for taking the time to read. :)

Good morning bump.
Bump before bed.
Trying again today.
Level 55 now. So. Updated, yeah.
Lol, I’m unfortunately pretty attached to my world, but if something ever does come up where I do switch I’ll def. keep you in mind.
Remade it, oops.

Hey there! I’ve been following this thread for a while, reading in on what everyone is saying and taking into account all the questions and answers. I think this is really great and really helpful. Especially since, when I started my elementalist, all I generally found were threads complaining about how bad Eles were. I tried changing at one point, but I just couldn’t get as absorbed into other professions as I did with my Ele. In the end, I stuck with it, and now I’m finding more and more threads like these popping up. Makes me so happy, honestly. I am definitely not the best, and I definitely die a fair bit, but in my opinion, Ele is a super fun class and I’m glad people are finding a way to work with it/are enjoying it.
But uh, anyway. Little story thing aside, I had a quick question for you. I’m currently trying to level to 40 (level 37) at the moment. However, I find I generally get bored of PvE play after a few hours, meaning that even if I make myself continue, more often than not I find myself just dawdling around and not doing anything. Which means leveling is pretty slow (unfortunately). And while this isn’t a HUGE issue, it is an issue. Mostly because I’ve been wanting to try out WvW for a long time. At first, I told myself I’d wait to level 80. At least then I would have level 80 gear, even if it wasn’t as optimal as it could be.
And while that is still a viable option, I’m getting really, really impatient. Oops?
Anyway, the short version is that I’m thinking about forgetting the whole “get to 80 first” thing, and just jumping in when I’m level 40. Now, my question to you (and this thread in general, I suppose) is what build/stats should I be looking into for going in at such a level? I currently have ten in earth, ten in water, and by the time I get to 40, I will also have ten in arcana. From your build, it seems like I should switch out the ten in earth for ten in air, but my main concern is that my toughness will already be lacking due to my low level gear. Thus, I don’t know if doing that would be such a good idea.
Anyway, I’m just asking for any general opinions/tips to going into WvW at level 40. Honestly, I’m probably going to die a lot anyway while trying to figure out the mechanics and up my WvW skill level (especially considering I’m a complete newbie at anything even remotely PvP), but I’d like to increase my chances at surviving/actually doing slightly okay as much as possible.
Thanks a bunch in advance!
(Also, I’m slightly laughing at the fact that I kept saying “short” version and whatnot, and this still ended up kind of long. Sorry about that.)
Okay, thanks again, guys. I think I’m just going to not worry about my gear at the moment. I’ll just use what I have equipped now, see how it goes and then learn from that. But thanks for taking the time out to give me tips/answers. It’s greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, I suppose I should have included my weapon choices. Oops, sorry about that, lol.
But I run a D/D elementalist. I’m not opposed to switching to staff if it seems like it would be better for a certain situation, but I definitely don’t know it/it’s skills as well as I know D/D. And yeah, I’ve heard you level quicker in WvW, but I hadn’t been thinking about that too much. Thanks for reminding me not to waste too much money on equipment, lol.
And thanks, Creslin. I guess that answers the question about whether I should be looking for healing power or not, lol.
Okay, so lately I’ve been really wanting to give WvW a shot. I’m a total PvP noob, but am knowledgeable enough that I know that even though your level gets scaled up in WvW, your gear doesn’t. You also don’t get to unlock any traits/trait points and skills that you don’t already have. So I’ve been working on unlocking skills I would like, and also getting more points into the trait lines I’d like.
So now I have all the skills I think I want, and by the time I level to forty in a few levels, I’ll have ten points in Earth, Water and Arcana. So my only last concern is gear.
I’m figuring I will probably go for lots of toughness/vit (which I do already), because I’ll need it even more when I’m battling people with better skills/gears/traits and things than myself. I will probably also go for healing power (though if I die too quickly for healing to be of any use, maybe I’ll change that.) And then obviously power/condition damage.
Anyway, my question is this: what gear, in your opinion, should I be going for? Should I use craftable gear, or should I use the uh, cultural whatever gear (which I think I unlocked at level 35, but I haven’t checked it out much and don’t know how good it is)? What about runes?
Also, any general tips or whatever you can provide for someone about go into WvW for the first time would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
(P.S. Creslin reminded me of this, lol, but yeah, I run a D/D elementalist. So that might help a bit.)

Lol, out skilling might be a little difficult, considering my PVP skills are – for the moment – non-existent. But no, thanks. I will definitely give it a shot. I think I’ll try to at least unlock my third utility first, but then I’ll probably jump in.
Thanks for the responses, guys.
So I guess I should wait until I have the ones I want before attempting? Not that skill points are really that hard to get, I guess.
Cool, hey. So I want to learn how to PVP. Always been a PVE-er, mostly because I’m too nervous/anxious, whatever to try PVP, etc. etc. But decided what the heck, let’s give it a shot. I’ll die probably more than a few times, but it’s all a learning experience, whadda whadda.
My only question is that I’m only ~LVL 17 (I know you get boosted to LVL 80 in PVP though) in PVE, and I’m wondering if this will have some negative consequences when I try to PVP? Especially since I want to start off in WvW, where I hear that gear sort of matters? (Though if someone could better explain to me how gear matters in PVP/the difference between PVP and PVE gear, that would be greatly appreciated.)
Anyway, I’m just wondering if there is an “optimal” level to start PVPing at? Should I just wait until I’m level 80 and have decent-er gear, or should I just jump in and see what happens?
Basically, any tips/advice for a low-level (in PVE) PVP noob would be appreciated!
Key bindings? & a question about power vs. condition damage.
in Elementalist
Posted by: Chandelier.3567
I’ve been playing around lately with my key bindings, and I was wondering what some of my fellow elementalists use? Do you guys have a mouse with a bajillion different buttons that you use? Or have you rearranged your keys on your keyboard? Or have you just left them where they are?
On an unrelated note, I’ve been considering my build lately, and am wondering on your guys’ thoughts when it comes to power vs. condition damage? I am, personally, a D/D elementalist, and was wondering what my fellow D/D-ers preferred. I’m thinking more from a PVP perspective, but I’m interested in both PVE & PVP related answers.
(If it matters, I’m also using a build so far that is heavy in tough & vit. Because I’m very into survivability and honestly, I probably suit a Guardian more, but I just love the playstyle of Ele’s too much, lol.)
So, what are your thoughts, fellow Elementalists?
Thanks for the responses, guys! All of your guilds look great, honestly. And I’m really sorry for this inconvenience, but I think I’ve decided to hold off on joining a guild just yet. I want to reevaluate my characters/gaming for a little bit. Maybe get a little better/stronger by myself first before joining a guild and getting help from others. But I really have appreciated all the enthusiastic responses! I hope you guys find others to recruit who will fit into your guild.
Thanks again.
Thanks everyone for responding! I pretty much figured that I would just need to practice and play the game. No magical potion or anything that will make you instantly better, unfortunately, lol.
But seriously, thanks. I know I should start trying my hand at PVP, but I’m so worried that I’m just basically going to get one shotted right away, lol. I guess even that might bring about its own lesson though. I’ll just have to jump right into it and see what I can learn.
Hey, everyone. So I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and just decided I’d come out and ask you guys for some help. So recently I’ve been seriously wanting to improve my gaming abilities. Let me just say that before now, I’ve been an extremely casual player. I tried my hand at WoW for a month or two, but I don’t know, I’ve never been a very serious gamer and eventually I fell out of it. Also, that was a long time ago so I remember pretty much nothing, lol. Besides that, my gaming history consists of a few free-to-play games here and there. Again, nothing serious. Nothing I put too much thought or energy into, really. Nothing I really ever bothered getting to KNOW, if you know what I mean?
However, I have always had the desire to take things maybe a bit more seriously. I don’t think I could ever become uh, “hardcore”, but I like the thought of trying harder and getting better. Except I don’t really know where to start? Obviously I know I should get myself to level 80, and I am working on that (currently a level 38 Ele with a few alts.) And I know I should practice and figure things out like that, but I was just wondering, does anyone have any tips on how to go from being an extremely casual player to a, I don’t know, semi-hardcore player?
I would like to get into PVP and things too sometime. Try my hand at WvW and dungeons. I just don’t want to be a hindrance to team members/guildies and things. I want to be able to hold my own and really know my character and how to use them. I don’t know if any of this long post has made much sense, but I hope you’ve at least gotten the basic gist of what it is I’m asking.
So uh, any tips?
Wow, I think this is actually such a great idea! Definitely something I’ve been looking for. So uh, just let me get down to filling out this form and we’ll see what happens.
Name: Chandelier (but, uh, it’s more just a forum name I came up with on the spot, haha. I’d prefer you based any names/nicknames off my main character’s name.)
Main Character: Pawniard
Current Server: Ferguson’s Crossing
Interested Activities: PVE, socializing, improving my gaming abilities. Eventually PVP and dungeons. Oh yeah, and making alts, lol. Though I’m TRYING to get my main to level 80 already.
Active: Mostly evenings and weekends. It all depends on my rl schedule though, and that is generally up in the air.
Additional Comments: I’m really looking for someone to level with/chat with. While the game is fun, sometimes I get a little bored of playing it by myself. I’m also looking for someone to grow with, maybe? I’ve always been a really, really, really casual player. Like, really casual. Never really bothered to get too deeply into what I was doing. I don’t want to say that up until now I’ve been a person who basically mashes buttons, but I have been sort of similar to that. I’m hoping to improve my gaming, become a better player all around. Learn the tricks and whatnot. I don’t know, something like that?
And yeah. That’s that. Hope I can find some like-minded people to play along with! Even just some people who like to have a good chat/joke around from time to time would make my day.
Lol, is it that obvious? But yeah, generally always been a laid back PVE player. Just looking to change things up with this game.
