Pretty sure it’s not 500 per server per map, if that’s what you’re implying. That would be insane.
This.
I can’t even begin to imagine how bad the lag / player culling would be with 1.5k people per map.
The real cap is around 100 per server from what i’ve read.
I also don’t think free transfers are the issue here. (though in some cases they do contribute)
I believe the fault lies in the base mechanics of WvW and in the lack of flexibility in the ranking system. Basically everything in the way WvW is designed, is stacked against losing teams and teams with less numbers. This is a fault in my eyes, the game mode should be something that is fun and enjoyable at any point in time, regardless of the scores and number of people you can field (of course there would have to be at least some lower limit on this). The ranking system should be being monitored by anet (or at least community reps) and adjusted accordingly. If they spent 30minutes a day reading forums they could of been able to tell from a week ago that this weeks matches were going to be mismatches. The whole reason for not starting directly at two week matches was to limit the damage of mismatches, yet now that they are happening due to an unforseen reason they are silent. I guess in the end they didn’t really care about it after all.
On a different note, there are next to no queues on SoS now the weekend is over. At least not on the times i’ve joined in.
Even i have to agree with space here.
Whenever i get into a map its pretty much just zerging 90% of the time. When the map is green they just switch to another and rinse repeat.
People only seem to be interested in karma / exp atm, commanders included. When i made a few calls for defence the responses i’ve been getting are: “ehh we’ll cap it back later”, “dont’ bother defending” etc.
I can understand why it’s like that atm, as the matchup is very one sided and people still want to be rewarded. It’s going to be a shock when we hit our first real opponents again though.
edit: @Elterzzz, don’t kid yourself here, there is a huge difference to being out played and out numbered.

I eat thieves with my condition necro. Like not even close 1v1.
This is a great idea for a very temporary fix. If nothing else Anet should implement this while working on the deeper underlying issues.
Pretty much what TurtleMuncher said.
Not very much fun trying to do dungeons or DE’s by yourself. Not everyone on Sea of Sorrows actively WvWs.
But even if 100 people went one server and another 100 people went to another that should be enough to not only get better WvW match up, but also do your dungeon and PvE
Not even close. Lets assume they get 70% activity at primetime (a very generous estimate), now lets split those 70 players up. Some can’t afford to focus their attention on something as demanding as WvW / dungeons, so they go farm or afk, or use the trading post, lets say this covers ~15 people.
Now we have 55 players, this is a guild primarily focused on WvW i mean thats the reason they moved right? Out of these 55 the majority remaining will probably want to be doing what they love most.
40 of those jump into WvW, what can you do with 40 people? Well you can man a single map and have a slightly below average zerg if you run around in a group. You can spread out and have 10 people on each map (which is pretty much a joke force, 10 people can’t even assualt a tower with 3-4 competant defenders). Either way points wise you can’t compete with a single server that has more members on at this time, or has a stronger NA force that gives their oceanics a larger lead when they log on.
Now we have 15 people remaining that want to do something else, realistically are 1/3 of them going to want to run the same dungeon? Probably not. Crafting, leveling alts, farming for legendaries, etc there are so many things to do. It’s hard enough to get people for some dungeons on SoS when we have a ~9k member pool to access, with 15 you have almost no chance. (and i haven’t even mentioned DE’s, there certainly would be no karma zerg or enough people to do things like temples)
tldr; 100 people is nowhere near enough to do everything a server has to offer. if you think so, you haven’t really thought about it long enough.
It’s as fun as logging in and being one of 20 people in WvW.
Basically as an oceanic we are faced with two extremes (over population, or no population), and unless you are the leader of a large guild 400+ or have sway over as many people its not going to change.
I’ve played during NA times on our server previously it wasn’t fun. We had easily sub 20 people in the maps most of the time. I’m not going to leave just to experience that somewhere else in my PT.
PvE wise it makes no sense, all the zones would be abandoned, running a dungeon would be next to impossible.
I’ve made many friends here, even when guesting comes around i won’t be moving. I’ve put down roots. I like it here. I like my comrades in WvW, i like the chatter in LA, i like having a sense of building up my server as time goes on.
p.s. now that we have NA guilds we will be accordingly matched with other servers that also have 24/7 or close to 24/7 coverage, meaning good even fights all week. The problem has been fixed for us, i understand that others still desire oceanic coverage, but i can’t see any they could offer that is better than what we have here.
Good to see, i guess i read your post and quickly jumped on my horse to ride to SoS defence.
Welp, I guess that makes me take back my assumption that the reason you all are so bad is that you’re naive. It’s actually because you’re just bad.
Those 20 people are clearly a good indication of our servers skill, especially when anyone who actually cares about WvW and playing properly is barely queuing due to how boring the situation is right now.
Keep on making grand assumptions but, one day you may just be right.
SoS is full during oceanic times, meaning its almost impossible to transfer back if you play at this TZ.
Leaving isn’t an option for some of us. Even if it was, by limiting the points gained we would simply end up in another matchup like this, where we have another two servers complaining about how imbalanced the fight is. If it is possible to avoid this we would like to do so.
So many of you assume when we lose we are going to cry and leave. We’ve been losing ever since before the week long match-ups till now. We haven’t left yet why would you assume we would after one more loss. Use some logic instead of just blindly attacking everyone else.
Nobody from the SoS oceanic crew have ever resorted to using players on other servers. Not once in all our matchups, i can’t see a single reason why they would resort to it in this matchup.
If anybody was doing such a thing, it wasn’t anyone who has been on this server since launch. Either you are mistaken or it was a) someone from the new transfers (who do not represent SoS old / current views, at least not yet.) or b) someone in the similar vein to the hackers who have been popping up on many servers as of late.
We have always been looking for good fights, ask any one of the servers who could field an oceanic presence out of our previous matchups.
My point exactly.
You get at least fun fights (even if its just a 1v1), how fun do you think fighting nobody is. Tbh i don’t even log into WvW when theres no opponents (other than to chat and jump puzzle), and if possible i would spend 24/7 in there as i love it with even fights.
Now you complain that you aren’t enjoying having 1 player missing. We have 2 missing, all the time. Put yourselves in our shoes, having fun yet? I don’t think so. You have to deal with 1 unenjoyable server to fight. We have to deal with ~10. The difference between us and you is that we are good sports about it. We say our congrats and well played’s, not that you are all un-fun to fight.
With these new transfer we will be boosted up high enough to be able to play other servers with oceanic coverage, in close matches. Fun for everyone. It’s unfortunate that, that means this match is a walk over. However in my eyes its 1000% preferable than continuing to fight nobody, and causing blatant unenjoyment in matchups.
Oh, one other thing: if both the US servers we were facing were good, we could actually be at an advantage, as they would split the map for 12 hours or so. However, every darn time, one of the US servers would fail us. For example, last week Maguuma failed us.
When it was 1v1 (FA vs Mag) during NA hours like last week, numbers are absolutely everything. You don’t have that 3rd faction to split the forces so a zerg swarm is a much more viable strategy than if there’s an entirely different army that can use it’s numbers alongside your own, while not being part of your poplock.
This is why NA servers do not like SoS (previous to this current match up, as this is a different kettle of fish atm). You made matches not fun and you aren’t even aware of it. It seems like you guys like Mag (and who wouldn’t? we do hilarious stuff), but we sure as hell don’t like SoS.
Did you ever consider you made our matches un-fun? That we were able to accept that we would lose stuff in our sleep (which gets expensive doing so every match), while almost every NA server acted like they should be exempt when put in the same situation?
We put that aside and were able to give you respect and compliments for your play, while we were very aware that we weren’t the most fun opponents. Why? Because what we do to you, happens to us every matchup. We know more than any other server what night capping feels like. Every single morning since launch (bar 2-3 one day matchups) we have woken up to a map where we own nothing. Do you see us crying about how imbalanced it is? No, we man up and get to work.
Is it to much to ask that you can at least be a good-sports man and shake hands and say well played even if you have nothing else good to say?
No need to go around proclaiming your dislike of someone, especially if they have been nothing but courteous and polite to you.
There is a problem with the rankings though. As it was SoS would of probably ended up in the same tier as these two servers if nothing changed. However would the matchup be fun? Probably not, although SoS can compete points wise the week/2 week long matches would of consisted of simply flipping property every 12 hours.
This is an anomaly yes, however it is not something that server rankings could simply fix. However with a competitive NA scene SoS will now be matched up against other servers that have similar coverage such as IoJ / BG / JQ / SBI etc.
SoS has had people complaining since launch about how unfun they are to play due to the TZ difference (go look up any old thread I can guarantee that 5%+ of the thread will be people whining about it), now that some people have taken it into their hands to fix the problem they get abused?
I do agree with the majority of your post though. The ranking system is pointless as long as this remains so volatile. Anet needs to do something about it, i don’t necessarily think turning off free transfers is the solution. But i will agree that something is broken and it definitely needs to be fixed and soon.
I’m not sure why so many people in this thread are angry, you’ve been imploring oceanics to come to your server and shore up your coverage. Would you be abusing them and saying they were sick of losing and rubbish for swapping to your server?
The fact that some guilds saw that no oceanics were going to move and took it into their own hands to create the kind of server they had been advocating / wanting to play on, doesn’t make them suddenly terrible at the game, nor does it make them fair weather players.
Even if they were turn coating because they were losing (which i highly doubt), why would you want these kinds of players to stay on your server? Hypocracy is rife in these threads. You hate them, yet wish they had never left. They are terrible, yet you are boned without them. Oceanics should come to your server, yet any one who leaves for an oceanic server is the devil.
Come on people.. Enough blind attacks. Have some pride and respect for your fellow players regardless of server.
They don’t understand that they are doing to us what we are to them.
Aparently the world (vs world) only revolves around when they sleep, and when they cap all our stuff with no resistance its because they are awesome, yet clearly if someone else was to do it they are just taking it from ‘sleeping babies’.
Try to look outside your own view of the world for once and you might actually see the big picture (you know the one that includes other people).
edit: to the poster above me, if you have been in any SoS thread you would see that people complain about it every single matchup.
Sorry, but do all our previous opponents have pride in the same thing? We certainly had nobody on during NA PT.
We have pride that we could come out of the gates at a disadvantage (due to reset being at ~8am) and still give NA players a run for their money. Even if our PT seems to not last quite as long, on most days it was less than 8hours. Yet we continued to pull competitive scores out.
Quick score update:
SoS: 11,482, +435 SM *
DB: 7,563, +145
MG: 6,381, +115 **
SoS oceanic presence seems to have kicked in, in the last couple of hours.
I would like to see both DB and MG putting their differences aside come offpeak, if they both managed to get everyone into a single map (or two) they could prevent SoS from completely taking over, as well as potentially leaving NA pt with a few upgraded locations to start from.
I noticed there wasn’t a thread up for this matchup yet (at least that i could find), so here we go.
Current scores stand at:
SoS: 9,785, +325 SM *
DB: 6,865, +210
MG: 5782, +160 **
Looking forwards to good fights all week.
And you are seeing it with the new influx we’ve had. Now imagine about 75% less people in there, and that about sums up every match we’ve had for weeks now.
Its a wonder we got as far as we did on oceanic presence alone.
I have to echo most of the points of this thread. (except for the exploiting, i have a slightly different stance on that).
Every direction the patches have been taking the game have been wrong imo. I can understand that they want to “break up MMO norms” by removing farming and grinding, yet they have coupled this with massively increased prices on gears? Seriously? Not cool.
Anet wants me to run a dungeon over 50 times (fullclearing a path) which takes ages, or 160 times doing it as quickly as possible (still going to take ages), just to get some competitive level 80 armour? Except now it seems like they don’t even want people to be running dungeons often? I don’t get it.
Or they remove the drop rate for fine crafting items, at the same time they implement an anti farming system. How exactly am i supposed to get these items if i can’t even kill mobs for 15minutes at a time without getting 100% trash? I don’t get it.
At the same time they switch over to one week format on WvW, when clearly there hasn’t been enough data gathered. So many mismatches, complete stomps are going on right now. What do they want these people to do in the intrim? Run dungeons? nope. Craft? not unless you buy all your mats. Farm money? i dont think so. sPvP? not in any meaningful way. Sure i can pub stomp, or face potentially terrible people in free to play tournaments that have no real reward.
I guess they just want me to join the zerg roaming between DEs? For someone who’s supposedly been about options from the start.. this is an interesting way they have been taking the game with patches.
