I’ve been researching the game for the past few days as well. I’m tempted to come back and I havent played since the whole clockwork event so I’m sure a lot changed. I’ll be making an elementalist too since I havent really tried one before.
I was debating between thief and elementalist too and just the thought of doing a melee style caster thats incredibly fast paced sounds real good to me. That being said I was researching the dagger focus build and it sounds like what I’m looking for. Can I use that in groups and be accepted too or will I be pigeonholed into staff?
I’ll be starting from scratch at level one on Saturday. Hope to have a little more in depth information before then. Currently playing the diablo 3 expansion and hoping the switch back is worth it!
Would this be a proper build to use while leveling? I’ve already got a main zerker DPS and I’m looking for a support-type alt to have. And while I’ve got a Mesmer, she just plays too dang slow so I want to give Engineer a chance. I’ve tried it several times and gave up shortly after playing it mainly because I hated the fact I felt like I was doomed to spam grenades all day long.
While I am sure my perception of the class is entirely inaccurate, I was hoping that this might be a suitable build to work towards as I’m leveling? If it is something I can use as I level, which trait lines should I begin filling first?
Hey all, just switched from 30/25 and I have a few questions so that I may be able to perform to the best of my ability. Any help is greatly appreciated.
-is the grandmaster trait in the bottom line bugged? I’m supposed to get 15% more crit chance with full adrenaline but it doesn’t display on my character sheet. Is it just a hidden increase?
-am I better off hoarding adrenaline or should I use eviscerates in the rotation?
-what utilities work best? Currently I use fgj, disc banner, and precision signet (read in Nike’s guide that it provides more dps than the power signet). Should I switch it out for on my mark or something else?
-i find myself antsy when I’m just watching axe auto. Is there a way to incorporate this build with maybe a sword main hand to mix it up a little or is that too big of a dps drop?
I am getting kinda bored with axes and was wondering if I can use my same power build with a sword? Would the dps loss be too big? I only do pve but I certainly like to carry my weight in dps. Would I need to move any gear pieces around? And should I still use it with mace off?
Also I’m unsure if I should stay with a 30/25 for this or go to a 30/0/0/10/30. If anyone has tried this combo for pve please advise.
That’s my thought exactly. Its the class I enjoy most so I will just stick with it. Its not exclusively for dungeons no but I figure I can use a dungeon power build out in the world while I quest.
This may be a stupid question but when should I swap to greatsword and when to swap back? Last night I swapped to greatsword when they came to melee range or when I needed to do some aoe but once I was in greatsword I didn’t really see a need to switch back until the next fight.
Going along with that question… how do I know which attacks I should be dodging and which I should soak up due to the limited endurance bar?
I appreciate all your guys’ input. I’m definitely gonna just play it out as its the class I find most fun. Shortbow was always my favorite weapon and a big greatsword looks cool too so I definitely want to build around that.
I’m not good at creating builds so I checked out the sword and board build and that seemed to be very melee focused. Is there one that is tailored to short bow greatswors combo? Preferably a power build of some kind? This would be strictly pve.
Again I appreciate everyone’s input. Thank you
Its a little disappointing that I wanted to play an archer and Ranger seemed like the best fit. Only to find that they are better with melee weapons lol
Edit: I wouldn’t mind a shortbow great sword build. If that makes for a viable power build. Would the DD505 be my best bet

Thanks for input.
Ryu, you mentioned “general pve” does that mean shortbow is not viable for dungeons? And given that shortbow stacks bleeds, does it make for a good weapon for a power build?
I went ahead and made one anyways. I joined a large guild that encouraged me to play the class I wanted. It really was between Mesmer and ranger. Hopefully I wont get shunned out of any groups because of my class.
As far as build I have been researching the best build for pve but couldn’t find anything. The dirty 505 thread looked interesting and it allowed me to use a bow but I’m not much into signet builds. They feel to passive for me.
After playing with all the weapons I’m truly open to using just about any weapon but I do want a bow (short or long, got kinda used to the long bow last night) to be my primary tool. I was going to try to make a condition based build around the short bow but in another thread on this page someone had mentioned never to bring a condition ranger along to group content. Does anyone have any solid advice on where I should look?
I appreciate all the input so far guys. I went ahead and made one last night to about 20 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. While not as flashy as my mesmer it feels like he kills faster, and is much more straightforward.
It’s certainly enlightening to hear that. I’m noticing a lot of people are using axes and greatswords.. Is that the way to go? Is shortbow not really an option? I don’t mind if Axes or greatswords are my secondary weapon. But I truly want to build something around the SB
After only playing a few months after release and then quitting until just today, I came with the intent of rolling Ranger. So while I was waiting for customer support to give me a new password I did some research and found nothing but disheartening threads on how terrible Rangers really are.
My second choice was Mesmer since I never played one before I quit but my sights were most definitely set on this class. Will I truly be shunned and not invited to any group content? I want to participate in all things PvE but I’d like to do it with a ranger.
Are there any good builds that revolve around Shortbow/X? I don’t really care what the other weapon is but I was hoping there was a good strong build for Shortbow. Everything is foreign and this is like an entirely new game for me so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I didn’t read through the entire thread, sorry if this is a repeat.
But how is this for solo leveling and general pve? I don’t do much PvP but I am looking for a strong Hammer build as it’s my favorite weapon. Would some kind of Power based build (which I couldn’t find either) serve me better?
Thank you for the responses.
I like the sound of conditions and for huge aoes. I can guess what wells are. How are these builds effective vs DEs or other areas where you are destroying supplies or a non-mob target? They aren’t effected by conditions, will a well detonate under this target? How much of a hindrance/annoyance is this?
By the weapon skills being boring, they just don’t seem too flashy, they’re quite slow, and they don’t feel like they’re hitting too hard. I’m hoping the necromancer weapons can bring some excitement.
I’ve got an 80 warrior and ranger, and I want to get away from the simplicity and try a caster of some sort. I’m debating between the Mesmer and the Necromancer.
While I didn’t so much mind having pets on my ranger, I’d rather not be so pet-reliant so I was wondering if there are viable builds out there that don’t use pets/minions?
I’ve got a mesmer now and she’s cool but the weapon skills aren’t really exciting for me. It seems fun, but I just can’t get into it. I’m hoping necromancer may be the right fit.
First time poster here.
My ranger is about level 30 and I have been heavily thinking of going into this combo. I have horn/axe but I rarely switch to that when solo anyways. I mainly wanted the axe for aoe purposes since Shortbow virtually has none.
Anyways, just a couple of questions about this setup if anyone would care to answer:
1. Is it only Longbow’s auto attack that’s effected by range or does Barrage and Rapid Fire do more damage at max range than up close?
2. What kind of traits would you use for this kind of set up? Currently I have 10 in might and 10 in wilderness survival (the toughness one), and I’m starting up the precision line. Is this a good way to go?
For a little more information on the second question, my main focus is PvE right now. I don’t usually start PvP until max level.
Thank you!
