After a few weeks of play, and going as high as 57 on my Mesmer, I did my first dungeon today, AC. It was an interesting experience and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect based on what I knew from just standard world PvE.
I come from WoW, where I had many 80s and did every raid up to cata (all the way back from vanilla) so that’s my point of reference for dungeons. Having played the majority of classes in this game to at least level 15, I got the impression there wouldn’t be dedicated tank/healer roles like in WoW. Curious to see how this worked, I eagerly entered the dungeon.
What I found was sort of… lackluster. It felt more like a zerg, an elongated event rather than a dungeon requiring strategy. There wasn’t really any one person tanking damage, and usually the aggro would bounce between people, resulting in some confusing play. The bosses themselves, interesting, but also boring.
The lovers idea is fun, but you just end up spamming rocks not just in that fight, but everyone. Carrying boulders with you from one boss to the next. It becomes beating a stunned horse almost. There isn’t a lot of reward or challenge. And not a lot of coordination, just chickens with their heads cut off, dpsing.
Now I’ve played guild wars 2 long enough to know there is a lot to this game that I still may not know. I slowly but surely discovered things as I leveled up, and I still discover small elements of play even now. But, I’m pretty disappointed with the dungeons.
So tell me, am I missing something? Is this what I can come to expect as I get higher, or at 80? And with fractals? Maybe I’m just a traditionalist, and I enjoy my standard roles a bit too much. Which is fine, as I enjoy wPvE enough to continue playing this till 80. And wPvP looks good too. But I am a bit disappointed.
Thoughts, feedback, all appreciated.
Cheers!
Hey Anet.
Really enjoying your game and the world of Tyria. You’ve done some truly incredible things that are absolutely awesome. From the engaging combat, to events to the social element that level scaling allows, to the size of the world.
That said, your game isn’t without many issues that a game of it’s scope and size faces. Bugged events, class issues.
As a player of this game I’d really love to know what its devs are working on. What are there immediate goals and their future ones? What issues do they see the community having that they agree with?
Basically I’d love to know what you guy are working on so I can stop guessing what you’re working on. Long term and short term goals. More communication, would be something I’d love to see.
I know it’s tough, mmo communities are an interesting lot, but soldier on.
Cheers!
Thanks to the both of you for the advice. I’ve messed around with both of those. But the issue is getting any clones up at all that don’t immediately die from being aced by all the mobs.
I’m still stuck in the same place with no effective AoE when you compare it to just about every other class. Ranger has the axe. Guardian has the staff. Thief has the short bow. Elementalist has staff and a number of other abilities. I’m not sure about warrior, necro or engineer though.
It’s just a real drag. A disappointment that my profession seriously lacks abilities to deal with a common situation.
I’m not asking to be able to solo 40 mobs or mass pull 10. Just for enough AoE so I have a chance at taking out large packs when they aggro, like I feel I do with my other professions.
Guild Wars 2 has truly impressed me. To a level I thought not possible. The combat is engaging, the graphics are pleasant, and the world is vast. So, overall Anet, you’ve done a good job.
After seeing the mesmer, I wanted to give it a shot. A very interesting leveling experience. Challenging at first, but slowly it became rewarding and fun as I found my synergy with the class and it’s weapons.
However I do have one thing that really sucks the fun out. Despite my tests and attempts of adapting, I can’t seem to handle large packs of mobs on my mesmer. Granted I’m only 49, but I’ve just completed the major 50 quest, involving Claw Island. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll stop there. But, large packs of mobs were involved.
I honestly didn’t feel like I had any effective way of getting them down. My mesmer is completely single target, save for a couple of phantasms, or chaos storm. So minuscule is my AoE capability, it really turns me off from playing.
Sure I have the one hander sword, but the cover of my illusions is destroyed do to all the damage being brought down on them. Which also doesn’t allow me to shatter 3, because I can seem to get to 3. There’s just too much damage.
It makes for a pretty frustrating experience and I wanted to voice it. If anyone has found a solution, weapon combo, skill match up, anything, I’m totally up/open for it. But, so far, this lack of situation handling is a major thorn in the classes side.
Cheers Anet. Look forward to seeing where you take the game.
Hey Folks,
My two friends and I just started playing guild wars are are slowly but surely learning the game. We’re looking for a chill, laid back, guild that we can leach benefits off of and run dungeons with.
We want to get into PvP to.
Thanks very much! Cheers.
My bad. I understand a bit more clearly. So my issue now is that my dailies don’t appear to be resetting.

Huh, I don’t think I did. But, I’ll look into that. I’ll double check though.
Thanks for your reply. This is pretty disappointing.
Hello!
I don’t know if this is technically a bug, but I’m not sure where else I should put this. I completed the ‘Daily’ achievement for my Mesmer but I never received the chest containing the karma and gem.
At first I didn’t think much of it but now I’m in dire need of that karma. Is there any other way to access achievement chests if you’ve unlocked them but not used them? I never got any prompt and so I’m just sort of… stuck. I did some googling and it doesn’t look like anyone else came across this issue.
Any help would be appreciated!
