One other thing it could be, is since ur using a laptop9and a non gaming one at that), u might be overheating, causing ur system to throttleback and thus lowering ur performance. Pushing a non gaming laptop so hardp laying a game, and for extended use, can easily overwhelm the cooling. Install some monitoring software ot measure ur temps to see if this is the case.

This indeed seems like a very likely case, GW2 is very CPU heavy and what you describe where it will run fine for a while and then slow down seems like exactly what would happen if the CPU is overheating. It runs well to begin with and then when heat builds up it will cause the CPU to slow down, and when you restart the game you “fix” it by giving the CPU cooler a brief period to catch up and cool things down.

Update is taking ages to download!

I hope you have already completed your download by now, but in case you still have problems you may want to try what I did. I had issues with the download speed and accidentally noticed that if I chose not to log in and just left the launcher alone it would download at full speed. It would not slow down until I attempted to log in.

Patch download slowness/strangeness

Apologies if this is something that is already known, but I figured I should report this strange behaviour that I found.

So I start the game yesterday and find that a patch has to be downloaded, and the download speed is extremely slow (as in ~30kb/s or so, often slowing down even more and stalling completely). This is something I have had problems with before, and I generally just let it take its time and go do something else for a few hours. However, this time I thought I should try to troubleshoot the issue as I really should get better speeds. My Internet connection is 100Mbit so should not be a problem there.

Some searching on the forums led me to a couple of cases where employees suggested starting the client with the “/clientport 80” option so I tried that and got no improvement at all. But during my testing, while I restarted the client several times, I noticed that the download speed was actually quite high just at the start after starting the client, and then it slowed down. Just to test something I restarted the client a final time and then chose to not log in and just left it running, and this time the download speed remained high (5MB/s or so) and the patching completed quickly after which I could log in and play.

So, I guess what I wanted to say is that this may be something that the developers may want to take a look at. It seems that there is something strange going on that causes the patch download to slow down by a lot after logging in, and I can’t see that there could be any reason for this to happen.
